Entry Snow, snow and more snow
Nov 21 2008 22:33

OK.  The white snow is still coming.  I think we have enough already!  Today, my little Home Hardware Store sold 8 snowblowers (average cost $900-1400.00 Cdn).  In the last 3 days I would guess we have sold at least 200 snow shovels.  Skid after skid on safety salt has flown off the floor not to mention all the usual emergency stuff - flashlights, car safety kits, etc.

So this would tend to make me think that most people understand the severity of Winter but, last night, my oldest son reminded me that teenagers are not "most people".  He brought home a stray.  A stray 17 year old girl, that is.  I'd never met this one before but he asks me if I would be able to give her a ride home.  He offered to take her himself but knew that would be unwise for him (a new driver) to be on winter storm roads at night.  He then tells me that she lives 20 miles out of town.  Nope.  I'm not going.

I sort of felt a bit sorry for the girl but not much.  The weather forecasters were shouting the news for the last 2 days that a storm was coming and she just didn't take the bus home after school because she wanted to stay in town with her friends and assumed her parents would come pick her up whenever she wanted to go home.  Not.  Neither her, my son nor myself were able to even find one of her parents until almost midnight when her mother finally called just to say that it was snowing too bad and she would have to find somewhere to sleep.

That is how I ended up with an unknown 17 year-old girl sleeping in my basement last night.

Entry The real snow is coming
Nov 20 2008 19:15

Got a good work-out in at Curves yesterday but not today - I had the early shift at work and, by 5:30 p.m., my knee was done for the day.

Had a great time at the Secretary's Dinner last night.  I totally blew any semblance of a diet because I was in the best restaurant in town and their food is absolutely outstanding.  Seared scallop entree on a bed of creamed cabbage, port schnitzel with cream herb sauce, garlic potato, asparagus, 2 glasses of white wine and creme brulee for desert.  I'm not even going to attempt to add these calories up but the meal was absolutely divine.  And, if possible, the company was even better.  I laughed so hard last night that my stomach muscles were still sore this morning when I got up.

This morning, the temperature was mild and the sun was blinding bright off all our new white snow.  This evening, we are expecting 5-10 inches of new snow.  I sold a lot of snow shovels at work today!

Not much else new here.  Hope everyone has had a good day.

Entry Just Hanging Around
Nov 18 2008 22:10

Not much going on in my Winter Wonderland these days.  We have 4 inches of snow on the ground and a promise of more on its way.  My first exercise tomorrow will be shovelling the driveway!  Secondly, I'll be getting my snow tires onto my truck!

I did not go to Curves today as my right knee is really acting up the last few days and is now slightly swollen again.  Time to give it a bit of a rest so I took the day off.  Hopefully by tomorrow morning it will be OK for another run at Curves.

Had my measurements taken at Curves yesterday.  I don't know how this is possible but I've lost inches (5.25 inches total) everywhere EXCEPT my hips!  LOL!  How typically female is that I ask you!?  Most importantly, my BMI dropped another percentage point.  My weight is stuck at 205 and has been for a couple weeks now.  I think I'll really have to hit the water and munch on more carrots to jump start the loss again.

Tommorrow is a day off work and tomorrow evening is the annual Christmas Legal Secretary's Dinner aka Local Lawyer Bashing Extravaganza.  Always a lot of fun with great friends and (former) colleagues.

Hope everyone has had a great day!  Take Care!

Entry Scale's going down
Nov 08 2008 16:33

Sudden drop on the scale today to 204.2 lb.  I'm so happy!

Got to Curves today at 8:30 a.m.  That is SO very early for me on a Saturday!  Went to the city to get some early Christmas shopping done.  Had lunch at Boston Pizza and who would have guessed that a citrus salad with grilled chicken would have 800 calories!  (I looked it up when I got home).  Oh well, it sure was good - and I had to bring half of it home in a doggie bag so I'll have the rest for dinner.

Off to do some cleaning.  Hope everyone is having a good weekend.  Toodles!

Entry One little pill won't fix this
Oct 20 2008 20:25

Spent yesterday and today in the hospital emergency ward.  Now have left arm in a splint.  I apparently broke my wrist when I fell over the dog 10 days ago but the damage only became evident this past weekend.  I have at least one week off work and will be reading your journals but keeping comments short.  I'm not a great one-handed typist.

take care

Entry Try not to laugh when you read this.... (Just kidding - laugh!!!!)
Oct 10 2008 22:46

What a day I had yesterday!

Had to work an 8 hour day and my back was feeling worse and worse as the day rolled on.  By 1:30 p.m., I knew that, without a trip to the chiropractor, I wouldn't be able to work another hour.  I was really lucky and the chiropractor fit me into her schedule within 45 minutes.  I left work, got my treatment, returned to work and really felt much better.

6 p.m. I arrive home at the end of a tiring day.  Too pooped to cook so I ordered Pizza for the family (it showed on the scale for me today but not too badly - I weighed in at 206.4).  Rested with ice on my back and then did some stretching exercises before going to bed at 11.

Shifting around in bed to appease my sore back was not letting hubby get a good night's sleep so, around 1 a.m., I decide to move over to the spare room so he can get some sleep.

Cue the dog.  My old gal - Annee - always sleeps in the hallway just outside my bedroom door.

3 a.m.  I wake up needing to use the bathroom.  Grunt my way out of bed and head towards the bath across the hall.  Don't bother switching on lights or anything - I can easily find my way.  I also couldn't see the black dog that moved herself from outside my bedroom door to the spare bedroom doorway.  I tripped over the dog - knew it was a dog cause of the hair stuck between my toes as I began falling..... dog flies up off the floor (as fast as a 15 year old dog can fly ..... I realize that I'm going to fall right on top of my old 60 pound dog  (and my weight definitely outweighs hers) ...... so frightened I am going to really hurt my dog ...... I twist my body (read, "wrench aching back muscles" here) ..... slam my right elbow against the doorframe ..... slap my left ankle (yes, the one still recovering from the bad strain) against the footboard of the bed (thankfully, did not dent the antique bed - they sure made wood tough back then).... realize Annee has made her escape towards the kitchen ..... it is now safe to land ---- directly onto my left hip.  Let the vibrating and screaming pain begin.  And hubby is still soundly sleeping not 20 feet away - didn't hear a thing.  Annee returns to me as I lay on the floor - lets me have a nasty growl (I scared the pee out of her I'm sure) then starts to lick away the tears of pain streaming down my face.  Yes, I might have been crying but I was also in awe of how good I have become at abusing my body lately.

Today was a longgggggg day at work.  Another chiropractor visit.  Lots of ice.  A new support belt for my back.  But the best part - my dog still loves me and hubby got a good night's sleep.  To give him credit, hubby did comment on all my new bruises this a.m. - wondered when I got them....

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.  It's Thanksgiving here in Canada and daughter will be coming home tomorrow.  I don't plan to stray too far - think I'll strive for a calm and peaceful weekend!

Take Care everyone - at least take care of yourselves better than I do myself!

lornajean.

Entry Curves
Sep 15 2008 20:35

I think I like Curves - I know I'm in love with the stretching machine.  I could hang out on it all day long!  The work outs aren't too stressful and I do manage to get my heart rate up and a fairly good sweat-on by the end of the circuit.  I was really nervous before my first visit - with all the falling down and injuries I have sustained this year I have more sore spots than not.

Took a short ride on my bike today - my knee doesn't like it too much but my ankle  is doing fine.  Maybe I'll be able to get in some biking this Fall - I sure missed it over the Summer.

My weight has been coming down rather quickly so that's rewarding.  Keeping the proteins high and limiting the carbs seems to be working.  I still have to work at increasing water intake - only 4-5 glasses on average per day so far but that will come.
