With a work deadline, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, I've effectively been tapering for two weeks, with fewer, shorter, and less intense workouts. One week would be ideal for a sprint tri, and two weeks is probably two much.
Yesterday, the day after the Yom Kippur fast, I went to the gym. I was only able to do 8 pushups (17 the previous week), and gave up on pullups after failing at the 10 setting. Then I jogged 1.3 miles on the treadmill, mostly uphill. When I tried to go flat, 5 mph felt fast to me, after the previous week's 7.2mph max. It's amazing how weak I was with one day of fasting.
Either I'll be fully recovered by tomorrow and the race will be excellent with all the rest, or the taper will be too much and it will be a disaster in terms of performance.
We'll see!
I think you'll do great! Yesterday was probably just bad b/c of the fasting, so you're body didn't have the power to do it. But I think w/ good eating today you will do awesome! If you see me w/ my Team in Training wetsuit on you'll know it's me! I might be hanging out w/ an old guy in a TNT wetsuit also lol |
I'll be in a sleeveless wetsuit for the swim, and black tri shorts and top for the run. I might wear the short-sleeved top under the wetsuit. Blue trek bike, red and gray helmet. |
Generally I feel like crap at the end of my tapers -- but if done properly, the effect is worth it. Good luck to you (to ktcort13, as well)! |
Thanks coach k! The registration says that the water will be 62-65 degrees. That's the same temperature as ocean in Santa Cruz when I did practice open water swimming in an ordinary swimsuit. So I probably won't die from hypothermia because of a sleeveless wetsuit. |
