Cool story for the children at Easter! Hollow cookies representing that Jesus has risen!
| 2 | cups pecans |
| 6 | egg whites |
| 2 | cups sugar |
| 2 | teaspoons vinegar |
| 1/8 | teaspoon salt |
- Preheat oven to 300 degrees
- Place pecans in zip lock bag and have children hit the bag breaking them into small pieces. Explain that Jesus was beat up just as the pecans.
- Add vinegar to mixing bowl. Let children smell it and explain that this was what Jesus was given to drink while on the cross.
- Add egg whites to vinegar. Explain to kids that eggs represent life. Jesus gave His life to give us life.
- Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our sin.
- Add sugar and explain the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him.
- Beat with electric mixer on high speed about 15 minutes until batter forms a stiff peak. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus.
- Fold in broken nuts.
- Drop by teaspoons onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid.
- Put cookies into the oven and turn off oven. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed tight. Explain to children that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven over night. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. In the morning on Easter, open the oven and give a cookie to each child. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookie is hollow! On the first Easter Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb opened and empty! He has risen!
- Happy Easter everyone!
