RANTING BURNS CALORIES!

This is an open, ongoing, support-encourage-motivational-RANTING thread. Feel free to skip to the end, or spend days reading through all of this ...

* * *

I have decided that "Diet" is a 4-letter word.

I find myself muttering and uttering the word around my house these days with loathing and vehemence previously reserved only for comments directed toward liberal politicians. In fact, I seem to be talking to myself a lot more these days .... sort of a running, sarcastic commentary on all the foods I can't eat, or on various other related topics. I wonder if there is a link between calorie-deprivation and Tourettes Syndrome? Grrrrrrrrr.....

I am now on Day 8 of the dreaded D-word. This is already the longest period of time that I have ever successfully remained on a diet. And I seem to be growing grouchier and feistier each day..... at least when I am alone and no one is around to hear my running rants. (My wonderful DH has heard some of my more memorable rants on the subject of broccolli and reports that I am hysterically funny when I am hungry!) I am counting carbs. I am counting calories. I am counting fat grams. Sheesh ... now my math anxiety is about to kick-in!

Mini Rant #1 .... what masochist decided that the serving size of cereal was anything less than 2 cups? Have you ever measured out 2/3 a cup of cereal? Or even a full cup? And placed it in a bowl? Those few little flakes and pieces just sit forlornly at the bottom of the bowl, shivering and lonely, even when we dribble on a few meager droplets of skim milk! Sheesh. Well, I can tell you that there is simply no way that my oversized body is going to be happy with that tiny amount of cereal ... so I have been eating TWO servings for breakfast. SIGH. And while the side of the box says that I can supplement the cereal with some fruit, they probably don't mean eat 45 cherries with your cereal -- much less 1/2 a watermelon, huh?

Mini Rant #2 .... Things NOT to say to someone who has told you that they have just started on a diet:

1.Good, you sure needed it.
2. It's about time.
3. Really? It doesn't look like it.
4. Again? Haven't we heard this before?
5. Gosh, how much weight do you need to lose?
6. What do you weigh? I've always wondered.
7. I never need to diet, I have a fast metabolism.
8. Really? I can eat all I want and never gain weight.
9. Is THAT why you are so grouchy?
10. I sure hope you plan to exercise a lot more.

AAAUGGH! All of these responses are just the thing to make me even grouchier .... so just smile and say something encouraging and supportive, ok? I will let you know how it is going.

Yes! the fast food/ restaurant dreams KILL me!!!!! (I have been put on warning that I have started grinding my teeth IN MY SLEEP cuz it's such fun pretending I get to eat all I want to in my dreams ((Is this how I got fat???? and surely THAT burns calories!!!))).

I have cravings for crazy things- polish dill pickles and really sharp sharp cheddar cheese. together. I have been called a food freak before, I like to think it's just a spot of genius. When I was on my way to getting fat, I would convince myself that I must be craving something because my body was lacking in some nutrient, and thusly I should accept my cravings as my body telling me what I should eat to be healthy. Oy! It is much harder to have common sense. Takes so much more effort!

I have been on the meatless food for awhile (I was a vegetarian in my youth). Now I am finally getting my man to go for SOME of it. quorn has really really good fake chicken nuggets (I cannot, will not call them wings, they do not have any bones and certainly do not resemble the glorious wings of my non-dieting days!!!I do wish they would try to call them something that wouldn't leave the meat eaters saying huh? that doesn't taste anything like ......!) and I used to be in heaven with the boca polish sausages. Oh, and I love morninstar farms grillers! but I have learned since going back to meat, however, that the leanest of lean meats sometimes has less cals and fat than the fake stuff, for instance the lean jenne-o turkey bacon has 35 cals, compared to morningstar farms bacon which has 50cals, which my kitty certainly enjoys stealing more of (though for the record, she does eat asparagus!) it always pays to read the fine print on this one.

#182 krismasself Sep 13 2007 16:37

"Fine Print" now there's something to rant about!!!

Why is the nurtrional info generally the smallest print on the package??

Why are laundering directions also on small print labels sewn somewhere inside a garment??

Why do medicines come with more small print than the label can hold, so it has to be on an insert, which means less room for the medication??

Etc, etc, etc........   Now, where are my bifocals????

#183 brandy_m_gray Sep 13 2007 20:33
Here's one for you...to start, I would like to say that I am a HUGE sugar addict, which has been the hardest part of the last few days...(I just started this new plan on Monday!)  So last night I get home from work and for the first time ALL SUMMER there is an ice cream truck driving around by my house.  Fortunately for me, I had no cash BUT STILL!!  It's September!!!!
#184 mollymouser Sep 13 2007 20:40

Is it just ME, or do the rest of you torture yourself watching cooking shows on the Food Network? (And what can I say? Top Chef is one of my favorite shows!)

I'd like to see two cooks side by side, one making a high-fat, high calorie version of some fabulous dish, and the other making a lower-fat, lower calorie version of the SAME fabulous dish .... wouldn't THAT be a nifty show?

"......... to dream..... the impossible dream .............."

Yikes!!! Mr Softee...I can hear that darn tune a mile away, I swear!!

Anyone remember the Galloping Gourmet?? Always with a glass of wine in hand, lots of "clarified" butter and cream??? Well -  now he does heart healthy cooking shows...and he's sober!!

#186 mollymouser Sep 14 2007 00:45

Yes, it's time for "ASK MOLLY YOUR DIET QUESTIONS!"

Question:  How much water should I be drinking each day?

Answer: Fill your bathtub with water. (For heaven's sakes, make sure its clean first. And keep the dogs and cats away from it, ok?) Now, see all that water in the tub? You don't need to drink QUITE that much. (Though, some days, it feels like it, doesn't it?) Feel better now?  Unless you are a really tiny, water-logged, skinny person, you probably need to be drinking more water than you are now -- whatever that is. Start with a goal of drinking a glass or two more than you usually are, then spend the next four hours on the Internet looking up various recommendations of how much water you "should" be drinking. I was just one one website that wants ME to drink 15 glasses a day.... You probably don't need THAT much.

Disclaimer: Use your common sense and take all advice received on Internet forums with a grain of salt. Wait, salt is bad and causes water retention, hence the need to hydrate and drink MORE water. Uh oh. Seriously, this is a fun thread ... seek professional medical advice from a professional medical person.

Trick to drink more water: Make ice cubes using your favorite flavor of Kool-aid (no sugar - I make lemonade ice cubes). Toss 2 or 3 into a glass. Fill with cold water...Voila! Tasty water!

Problem I have is old bladder :(
#188 humorpam Sep 14 2007 03:17
I have been told to drink half of my weight in ounces of water. So at 320, I would need 160 ounces which is 20 glasses of water. I don't weigh quite that much but close, so I do drink 16-20 glasses of water daily.
#189 mollymouser Sep 14 2007 06:24

If I drank anywhere NEAR 16-20 glasses of water a day, I am afraid I'd need to move my computer into the bathroom!

Hmmm..... how much fiber am I supposed to get every day?

I need a checklist for all the diet-related things I am supposed to be doing!!!!

*bump*

I love this thread!  I wish it were still stickied!!

#191 whatcoloristhesky Sep 14 2007 17:45
Good point, why isn't it? :)
#192 mollymouser Sep 14 2007 18:18

The CC "Powers that Be" had this thread stickied for a little while, and then they "unstickied" it .... I assume that they have decided to only "sticky" threads for a while. (That is just my guess, though.)

I have to admit, though, that getting "un-stickied" is sort of like getting "un-invited" to the Prom, huh?

Or "un-chosen" for the dodgeball team .....

Anyway ... gooood morning, everyone! Got any exciting weekend plans? How are the diets going? Do you take weekends off? (oooo..... doesn't THAT sound tempting?)

My rant these days is with all the hot flashes I have been having, how come I am not thinner, should they not burn calories? What is up with that??
#194 krismasself Sep 14 2007 19:05

Hehehe...remember when folks started putting phones in the bathroom...imagine, computers now!!!

Plans for the weekend are still in the shop...literally! The RV needed some work, and won't be done before Tues Frown

Guess I'll just have to do some housework...yuk!

#195 mollymouser Sep 14 2007 21:38
Hmmm.... the activity log doesn't seem to list "hot flashes!"

#196 ohio45 Sep 14 2007 22:03
why do we all drink so much water?

Years ago, no one did this..............just curious.

8 glass a day water drinker

P.S. cold water burns a few calories, as your body warms it to body temp. I used to drink tepid tap water.
#197 danceswithforks Sep 15 2007 00:48
Kris You got me laughing over here with the computer in the bathroom.  I have a lap top and this baby can go anywhere.

Molly don't worry about being "sticked"lol
Your thread is Red Hot and will be here until you decide.
So, I'm not worried.  I'm comfy.

#198 danagrl372 Sep 15 2007 00:55
Don't like cold water.  It takes me too long to drink it.  I get Brain Freeze.  I like my water room temp.  I order my water in restaurants with no ice.  I know, I know.  I'm weird.

Hubby is away this weekend.  I am having a party tonight with my girlfriends!  Spent 4 hours last night cleaning (burns calories) and still had to clean some today (burning even more calories).  I boycotted cleaning for a while, so it took a lot longer than it usually does.  I really love having a clean house.  :) Going to the spa tomorrow, out to dinner tomorrow night, then to a end of summer pool party on Sunday.  I am doing more this weekend than I have done all summer.  Not really, but it seems like it.  I like to keep busy when hubby is gone, otherwise, I miss him too much. :(

I don't take the weekends off, with regard to the diet.  But I do allow myself one or two cheat days during the week where I may go over my 1200 calorie limit.  I usually still have a deficit, so I don't worry about it too much, but I don't go HOG WILD!  That was always my problem before.  I would do well during the week and blow it all to Hell on the weekend.  I am more mindful now.
#199 mollymouser Sep 15 2007 06:34

Well, it is 10:30pm on Friday night, and (as best as I can tell), I've gone over my daily calorie goal by about 200 calories. I still have a deficit, though, and this is the only time this week I have gone over.  But, I did have some Prime Rib, bread with butter, and fresh pasta .... so at least it was on YUMMY stuff, right?

Who'd have thought that I'd be paying this much attention to adding and subtracting and fractions? MATH! eeeeeeeeek!

We went grocery shopping tonight and I bought some Kashi oatmeal and three different flavors of Kashi cereal. I seem to be on a Kashi kick.

How many calories do I burn when I open my VISA bill and freak out over the balance? I couldn't find THAT on the activity log!
