Trying to lose 10 lbs. forever club
I am interested in finding others who have been struggling for a long time with losing the "last 10 lbs". . I've been battling to lose 10 lbs for many years. Actually, I've lost 10 in the last year but I needed to lose 20 a year ago (not just 10).
I run, bike and swim now and have been participating in running 5k's and triathlons. I have firmed up but would like to wear a size 8 comfortably. I may want to go on to a size 6 next.
I think that if I had some friends with the same goals, then I would stay motivated. Maybe we can share ideas and recipes.
Let me know if you are out there and interested.

Hi everyone,
Amy, Super Sprint= 400 yd. swim, 2 mi. run, 7 mi bike
As far as the prep for the swim, I swim in a 17 meter indoor pool at our local gym. I usually do about 600 meters with lots of drills to build strength. Most of our Triathlon swims, here in Florida, are in the ocean and you need all of the strength you can get. There's a master's swim class that I'm thinking of going to in an outdoor pool.
Are you preparing for a Sprint or an Olympic Distance?
Trixitrix, thanks for the reply to my philosophical waxing... a lot of it rings true....although I can blow it without the drinks..., it's that salt/sugar cycle that gets me.
Lilsccooter, great job on the 7 pounds! Do you have any advice?
Dievans, is this your first TRi?
Yahoo for Eievans! Great job!
Today's report: Walk/ran 50 minutes. Didn't do upper boday but cleaned house for 5 1/2 hours.
So far, consumed 1440 calories but I'm still hungry so I'll probably eat another 160 for 1600 calories.
Tomorrow: Swim 600 meters; Weather permitting, bike 10 miles.
1400 calories.
I will weigh in tomorrow and see how much damage I did last weekend.
Have a great day!

Hey everyone!
I weighed in and I am up .2 lbs from last week. That means I am only down a total of -4 pounds. I am trying to rationalize this weigh in. I am in the middle of my TOTM. I am in the middle of my taper week for my tri on Sunday. I overindulged over the weekend. With all that said, I guess .2 lbs is not too bad. I ran 5K this morning and felt really good. I plan to do a good 20-30 minute stretch session after I finish this post. I am not going to do double workouts this week, but I will pick up with them next week. I will stay within 1400 calories today. Next week if I don't see much progress, I may drop 50 calories and see what happens.
On another topic, any triathletes get stupid injuries? Two weeks ago I wiped out on my bike and had to walk around with scraped up elbows. Yesterday, I was almost at the end of my swim workout and this teenage girl cut across the lap lane. My face hit her shoulder and my goggles scraped about a 3 inch by 1/4 inch piece of skin off my nose. My son said I should put a big bandage on it so I look tough. I declined because I don't feel tough at all and I look like a shaved my nose. Oh well.
Have a great day!

Hey Di - I think any loss is good, and you've been working so hard for your tri. A huzzah for you!
Wednesday weigh in: one pound gone since last week! Which makes it a total of -3. I'm happy and really encouraged to continue.
Report for Tuesday: Stuck to diet and exercise, drank a lot of water.
Goals for Wednesday: Calories, 1400. Exercise, 1 workout + pushups.

Hi Everyone,
I am psyched that Trixi is down 3 lbs. and Di is down 4!! Huzzah! How about you "losers" listing your best weight-loss tip for the week??
My weigh-in was not as encouraging, but I'm okay with it considering last week's vacation. (most people gain about 5 lbs after a week's vacation).
I weighed 143.8 which is down -1.2 lbs. from my initial set point. I hit 141 on the scale before vacation and know that I can get there again, in the next week, by sticking to my plans. I also ate store bought rotisserie chicken last night which I think was salty.
Dievans, when I was at the end of my training for my Tri, it seemed like my body held onto the weight. Afterward, it seemed to come off easily. My friend, who did a marathon, said she didn't lose any weight during her training towards the end. I think when we up our exercise, our bodies want to hold onto weight. It might have to do with the fact that the muscle you are building is dense. I'll bet you are losing inches.
I've fallen a few times on my bike, especially after I got the clip-in shoes and peddles. I had huge bruises on my hips and scrapes on my knees and elbows. The nose thing sounds like a bummer!

amy - I am very much like you - I drink fast, way faster than my girl friends. 5 beers is nothing for me!
I just wanted to let you know, because if you're like me you want to see these - I have posted a before pic on my profile. Hopefully, i'll post the after pic soon!!!

Hey guys-
I'm new here, and just started trying to lose weight the health way. It seems that at the beginning of every summer I need to lose about 10 lbs. Over the course of the summer I lose it by basically starving myself and doing a ton of exercise...and then when the fall comes I gain it all back (plus more). So I'm excited to lose weight the healthy way this year and see if I can keep it off.
I also did my first triathlon last summer (just a sprint)...so I'm training again for one in September. So this seems like the perfect thread=). Just reading your posts has been very supportive. Thanks guys!

Hi All,
I'm done 1 pound from last Monday. I've also lost inches. My weekend was mixed - I didn't count my calories but I'm estimating between 1600 and 1750 calories for both days. Two workouts on Saturday, one on Sunday. Monday I was back on track - two workouts (I'm up to 20 laps swimming now!) and 1250 calories. One workout Tuesday and about 1100 calories. Today I'm shooting for 1300 calories. I took a 30 minute walk/run this morning and will do 21 laps late afternoon. Weight is still discouraging... it's taken me three weeks to lose one pound... but I do notice a difference in the way things fit (not so tight anymore :)

Hey fellnere! Glad you could join us.
Mcpchants, your picture is cute!
M0nster2, I understand how you can feel discouraged. It's frustrating when you see all the equations and calculations. We should be able to lose 1-2 pounds a week, according to the figures. My brain says, well, if I have a 500 calorie deficit every day for a week, I should lose a pound. However, I don't think my body speaks English.
A few months ago, I caught the pbs documentary about obesity in America, called FAT: what no one is telling you:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/takeonestep/fat/about .html
You can watch it online, but it is rather long. It's really good though. Anyway, on the show, there was a doctor who said there's a whole complex physiological, chemical, and biological matrix that determines things like metabolism and weight maintenance or weight loss. While it's useful to use the calculators and everything, we still have to remember that all these processes are on the cellular, organ, and whole body level. Or to put it another way, there's no real way to tell how fast you'll see results.

It would be fun if we could all post our before pics. I love to see pictures to put a face to who I am talking to!
So I have already eaten 945 calories today and it's only 2:16p.m.! I am making soup for dinner! And I am going on the treadmill tonight. My boyfriend will be there and he is great at pushing me (when I have no motivation)!

Good morning everyone!
Today is off to a great start. I biked 10 miles and stretched. My goal is to stay within 1400 calories.
tonia,
Thanks for the encouraging news about the week before an event. I am trying to stay focused on my athletic goals and just put the weight thing on the back burner for a few days. By the way, how was the 'vacation' with all those teenagers? I hope it was great.
mcpchants,
Nice picture! I can't quite figure out how to put a picture in my profile. I just have to find the time to experiment a bit.
Good luck everyone!

Good Morning!!
Di,
a nice bike ride to wake up!! Good for you. I had to be at work early today, so no morning workout. Ran last night with a girlfriend, so if I can get a run/bike in today, I will be happy. I have 14 miles in for the week, and a long run scheduled for Saturday AM. I would go with the bandage~~~ When anyone looks at your nose, just smile and say, "you should see what I did to HIM!"
The big party has been moved to Sunday, and I have two graduation parties to glad hand at before that. I will definitely be having a huge salad before I begin that trip.
got two days of double cardio in so far this week, so I am psyched! I weighed in at 138 today, so I know that I am officially off the 140 mark. (I have to stay at a certain weight for over 4 days in order to consider myself as having lost - the water thing plays havoc with those little pounds, so I don't like to see 140 one day and 146 the next....Anyway, here's to 138!
toniahayes,
I've run 3 marathons and never dropped any weight from training... in one I gained! Once you stop beating up your body and stop eating like crazy, the weight seems to come off easier. I think it's the physical stress we are putting on our bodies. It is hanging on to every ounce of food/water we give it.....
Everyone else~~~ Don't be discouraged!!! It didn't come on in one or two weeks, so it won't come off in 1 or 2 weeks. Be patient, be diligent, and don't let it get you down, the fact that you are even here means you've got what it takes to do this!!! Keep on going!!

I am pms'ing so today hasn't been a good day so far. Atleast I worked out last night and i'm working out tonight. I don't feel so bad about having a bad food day when I atleast workout!
Good luck to everyone else!
I am also going to start jogging at lunch time I think. I just have to find out if they have showers here at work.

Chin up, mcp! Good for you for working out tonight.
Yesterday I went over my calorie allotment (2 beers) so I made up for that today with a lower intake. Did 2 workouts yesterday, one today, and pushups both days.
For June 22: Calorie goal - 1400; Exercise - 2 workouts + pushups.
Challenge: Friday night.

great job everyone. no workout today~~~ I substituted pizza, wine and cupcakes for real exercise and moderation. I am going to bed before I have a chance to be really peeved at myself.

Hang in there everyone; I guess we are all having a time. I composed my last email responding to everyone and it took me 30 minutes- then before I hit the send button, my computer battery died since I forgot to plug it in and I lost everything.
dievans, I'm excited for you for your Triathlon. Let us know how it goes.
Fellnere, welcome.
Hang in there everyone... we have done so well and we are going to reach our goals.
Yesterday & today's calories: About 1500 calories both days.
Yesterday: swam 600 meters and biked for 30 minutes at an easy pace. Set new Triathlon goals. July 28th, I will do a Super Sprint and October 20th, a sprint.
Walk/Ran 2 1/2 miles early this morning: It is so HOT! Even in the gym on the treadmill is humid. Does anyone have any suggestions for hot weather workouts.
Friday, June 22 Goals:
1500 Calories; Swim 600 meters, lower body workout. Greatest challenge- getting my behind out of bed to go to the gym early since I would rather go to aerobics class later but I have other appointment.
Have a great day!

Hello everyone!
I did a walk/run of 4 miles this morning and a good stretch. It is hard to not push myself, but I want to be rested for Sunday's event. I will definitely let you know how it goes.
I live in PA where it can get very hot and humid and swimming is the best. Tonia, I know you are already swimming. I also love putting on my water sneakers(from Land's End) and racing my kids across the pool in about 4 foot water. We sometimes run with our hands on our head, hop on one foot, run backwards, hop with both feet, etc. It is quite a workout and lots of fun. The lifeguards look at us like we are crazy, but that is ok.
Tonia, where are your tri's?
Goal for today: rest, stretch, eat within 1400c.

Hi there!
I stuggle with this same problem. I agree with the first response about shocking your body. I also want to point out...many people should not be checking the scale and should be using measuring tape or clothing to measure there progress.
Since I added wieght training to my workout...yes I have gained lbs...but my clothes fit better and I look alot better. I have found using a measuring tape or clothing....is a better method for REAL progress. Try this.
Also...this sounds lame...but do more weight training..you will burn more calories at night..stregthen your bones....you will lean out. This is even more lame...drink water. I have found that if I don't drink enough water my body holds on to food more...it does the starvation mode and holds in everything.

Good morning everyone,
I stayed within my calorie goals yesterday and today I did an hour of Pilates with a short walk. I plan to stay within 1400 and drink plenty of fluids today.
I am starting to get nerves about tomorrow's tri. I have only done one other tri and two other races. I really just want to finish strong. No matter how much time I spend on the bike it still freaks me out that there is so much out of my control. I worry about flats, my chain dropping, other riders, and most of all, falling. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Ehalo1, I don't think your thoughts are lame at all. I tape measured bust, waist, hips, and thighs, when I joined this thread. I plan to wait one month and measure again. I also agree that strength training and stretching are just as important as cardio. I am 39 and know that muscle loss is a problem. Good advice!
