What are some Very VERY VERY Low Calorie Snacks??? olgaclark
  Dec 19 2006 02:48
Sometimes I just want to eat something. I am sick of baby carrots. Is there anything I can eat as a snack and not worry about the calories. I just want to chew something, and I am not a fan of gum, it makes me very hungry. So please please please suggest something I can just snack on without too much counting involved :)

I used to eat all of those fake excuses for food that have no calories but are jam packed with chemicals that really Mess with your body, but about 2 weeks ago I put a halt to it. I decided to go compleately organic and all natural-CHEMICAL FREE. I figure I'd rather be healthy than escape the calories in things like sugar and butter by using artificial sweeteners and becel spray butter. Regardless, the snacks I USED to thrive on were...

Sugar Free Jello - 10 calories per 1/2 cup

Rice Puffs with a few squirts of spray butter and some splenda and cinnamon - 50 calories per cup

Frozen grapes - STILL LOVE THEM - 2 calories per grape

Celery - also still love it

100 calorie popcorn with spray butter - sooooooo good, but sooooooo bad for you (not fattening, just unhealthy)

Now i snack on  things that are packed with nutrition AND low in calories such as:

High Fiber Rye Crispbread - 40 cals per bread

Hummus - 40 cals per tbsp

Veggies and Fruit - varies

Salsa - very low cal

Marinated tofu - also very low cal and SOOOOOO tasty

Here is the best fruit snack ever...

You take a cup of each of the following and put it together and freeze it...  I've listed the calories per cup next to all the fruits...

apple-65

orange-85

halved grapes-62

cantalope-54

watermelon-46

pineapple-74

pears-96

strawberries-77

honeydew-64

black berries-64

pitted and halved cherries-91

Mix all together and split into 1 cup baggies... they come out to 70 calories a cup.  You can even take out the higher calorie fruits and put more watermelon in to reduce the calories.  Ore just put 4 cups watermelon in with everything else and it will reduce your calories per cup to 65.2 calories.  And it takes a long time to eat a cup of frozen fruit...

Meringue cookies - mini ones are 9 calories each, sweet & crunchy with no fat in good flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and mocha (chocolate chip ones have some fat)

Another good one for me...
Mediterranean Salad:
Chopped fresh tomato
Chopped seeded cucumber
Chopped green onion
No-fat vinagrette salad dressing (rasberry or balsamic are good)
Chill.
Almost 0 calories

if u like chocolate, which i kno I'm infatuated with! Dove has made a new chocolate vitamin bar, its packed with B6, C etc etc. its got great antioxidents! its only 80 calories, and its just like a candy bar

dried fruits (minus the added sugar) are great to munch on.

There are some great suggestions here! I've recently discovered this and it works wonders -

Make tuna (canned and contained in water) salad but use fat-free sour cream (20 calories per 2 tsp.!) instead of mayonnaise. Chop up some onion, celery, and pickle and season it well with salt, pepper, garlic powder, celery salt, cumin, whatever sounds good! I love banana peppers and mustard on my tuna. Then, slice a cucumber and top it with a bit of tuna salad. Super healthy, protein-rich and low-calorie.

Also, never underestimate a smoothie - just use lots of low-cal fruit, maybe a little tofu or wheat germ to keep it filling, and go light on any processed sugar or fat - use either fat-free or soy milk or low-calorie juice.

For beverages, I drink Arizona Diet Green Tea by the gallon - literally. It's like $2.50 for a gallon and calorie-free, plus it's delicious and surely must have some of the health benefits of green tea. Since it's sweet it helps me when I'm having a sweet tooth.

One thing I'd like to mention - I hear a lot of people talking about sugar-free stuff. While Splenda (sucralose) is more or less ok thus far, I'm not sure anyone realizes how bad aspartame (Nutrasweet or Equal) is for you. It's in a lot of diet stuff, like diet soda, Sobe, Snapple and diet jello... It doesn't affect everyone, but watch out - I used to get headaches all the time, like every day. I also drank diet soda every day. Then I came upon this website where hundreds of people had sent in their complaints about negative health affects from Aspartame. People would get headaches and eye problems. I know it may sound silly, but I've been aspartame-free for nearly 2 months now and my headaches only come once every two weeks. They stopped almost 2 days after I stopped drinking diet soda. Just check out the label - if it has aspartame in it, don't buy it. There are tons of other things you can get that are still diet but aren't the same chemical.

Here's a good web site if you want more information - think about it. It might really be affecting you more than you think.

Btw, for some reason it keeps putting an extra space in the word sweeteners that messes up the link, so make sure there are no extra spaces if you decide to look :)

Oh, AND another great one - in the summer, a typical Mexican snack would be:

*watermelon, as much as you want - drizzle with fresh lime juice, salt and a little hot sauce - Valentina or Buffalo brand is best.

Also, what they do sometimes is make a salad the same way:

*watermelon, oranges, jicama, mango, papaya, and whatever else you want soaked in a ton of lime juice with salt and hot sauce. If that's too hot for you, you can always try a milder sauce to get a similar flavor.

Many Mexican dishes make fresh, cool food using lime juice:

*tuna with lime juice is great! Make Mexican-style tuna salad with lime juice, salt, diced onion, jalapeno or other peppers, cilantro and some hot sauce. It's as low-calorie and high in nutrients as you can get!

Or, make a pico de gallo. It's not actually meant to be eaten on chips, but rather to be "picked" like with a toothpick - hence the "pico". You can do savory with tomatoes, peppers, onion, cilantro and lime juice or:

*mango pico de gallo; dice some mango, sweet yellow onion, jalapeno pepper, cilantro - jicama and bell peppers optional. Soak in fresh lime juice, add 1 tsp. honey and season with salt and pepper.

spinach, celery, and cucumber are all VERY low calorie. a WHOLE cucumber only has like 34 calories or something!

for a little flavour you could add a little salt, pepper, vinegar or all of the above - or even salsa; the kind i buy only has 8 calories for 30g and its GOOD.

and also, raspberries only have 1 calorie per berry.

you could also try tea?

Low cal jelly is yummy bit I feel a little lacking in nutrition when i eat fake sugar sweetened cow hooves. So I usually stir in a tin of apple baby food or mandarin segements. It doesnt make it a healthy food, but I feel a little better and fuller.
