Then summer was over and I had to shift my jogging to the 4PM heat and humidity. It was almost unbearable, but I made it. Then winter arrived and I had to deal with a host of new issues ---- never been an exerciser, let alone one who ran in the ice and snow, so how do you keep your glasses from fogging up or avoid bronchitis in the cold???? Made it through that too.
This summer (up until yesterday's close), I taught summer academy but did not have to be there so early as with regular school, so I was able to return to my morning workouts. HALLELUJAH --- I had forgotten how incredible cool, peaceful, and invigorating it is to run in the early morning hours. It's as if my dog and I are the only living beings..... I love it.
My body clock is pretty good at waking me up and I try very hard to just make it happen every day --- for me to be done with my workout in the cooler weather and because my dog needs the exercise, but my friend Tamar who lives in a VERY HOT climate is having a hard time getting up to run.
How do you make it happen for yourself? How do you get up and get going???????
Other deep thoughts that cross my mind in the morning..........
1) my knees are beginning to be an issue even with new shoes, stretching, ibuprofen, etc, anyone here an OT or sports medicine guru? I know I supinate/walk on the outsides of my feet and that is why my knees hurt ---from being torqued too hard side to side, so what do I do to strengthen whatever quad/ham muscles to stop/help my knees?
2)am I the only person stricken at times with almost emergency bathroom situations while jogging before "voiding"?
3) anyone find now the mp3 player that first motivated you to keep going is now just a distraction from the road and your pace?
4) what about runner's etiquette ??? -- I always get out of oncoming car paths -- even if it means running across the road or getting my running shoes wet/dirty, but still the people in this town are hateful.
5) what about this --- the same routes I have been running (I have a range of 2-5 miles mapped out) are getting too easy/too short/I feel like I could run more, but I like to do a loop, you know? start at my house, make 4 turns, I am home. do I just try to pick up my speed (yuck) or do I do two trips?
This is long, but I hope to hear lots of good advice and get a support group going for all us early morning slaves of the shoe! Are you out there?????
serious question: if I go to a bike shop and ask about buying a 3 wheel bike, I would call it recumbant?
lol, I always just thought that meant "stationary." ( : I am dumb.
yeah i'm pretty sure that's what they are called. One big reason people use them is it's easier on the back and neck.
anyone run this morning? it's getting so humid and hot here that my sweat is not evaporating that much any more. any tips? I'm thinking of going before the sun rises b/c it's only 80 degrees.
oh I hate the humid weather!! I live in MI and I hate it. I come home and I have sweat running down my legs even. I am getting use to that but I just can't stand when it's so bad you feel like there is no oxygen in the air. I just watch the weather and try to time my runs accordingly. It sucks because I have had to drop down to 4 times a week usually. I really should get back on my elliptical but that is horrible compared to outside :)
But no I didn't run this morning either maybe tomorrow I will. I really try to not take 2 days off in a row but I may have to. It actually tends to be more humid in the morning than at night. But at night it doesn't get cool until it's really dark. So it's a toss up heat or humidity. So my advice is to move to AZ with me :)
I am SOAKING WET from head to toe after jog. I usually go from 7-7:30 AM. wow (global warming!)
Leslee, only if I can take my catdog and still find good Mexican food. ;)
oh no olivia, it is TOO HOT here to run during the day. I have been running at dawn or so, but it looks like it is time to change to predawn. I was going to take Mondays off because I am trying to change to Monday as my off day, but I just love jogging on Monday mornings too much. :)
Still freezing my arse off her in the mornings, although the days are starting to get a little warmer... sometimes. Y'all can move here to get out of the heat for awhile if you want, I am so tired of it. On a positive note, sunrise is starting to get earlier again, I just noticed at the end of this morning's run around 6:20, the sun was coming up. That means I get to see my sunrises over the ocean soon! And the warm weather will follow :)
Had a great 4 miles this morning, I am tapering this week for my race on Sunday (not a full taper, just backing down my distance this week by about 30%). Its been nice so far doing shorter runs than normal, and looking forward to the race. Then, the last month of training before the half marathon!!!
Hope it starts to cool down for you guys soon
Well I am vacationing in PEI for the next couple of days. No need to worry about the heat today. I ran along Cavendish Beach at 4:30pm and it was about 15c. Nice running weather. Great to be able to run and seen different country side.
I had to run this morning even though it was horrible out. I only did 1 mile though. My back seems to hurt if I don't run. Does this happen to anyone else? I think running really stretches my back or something.
Hi Guys,
SO I am in a fix. Havent run for almost 3 weeks. I know that if I go and its wicked hard Ill get discouraged. On the other hand if I dont go thats just making it worse.
Oh and ofcourse there is the slight problem I cant seem to get myself up early enough to run...
Any suggestions?
Hi!
Olivia - My b-day is the 18th!
I cant do stationary bikes just like I cant do treadmills for very long. I feel like a hamster!!
tamarbee - I am having the same problem at the moment. It is so hard to get up early (4am for me)...even though it feels great to get in a morning run. My last run was on Saturday. I got up late that morning too so i was dying from the heat even though it was only 8am. My goal was to run 10 miles, but I only did 8. Not great at all. :(
But i am going to remedy that today. I am taking my lunch break and going to meet my nemesis (the treadmill). Hopefulyl i can get about 4 miles in. we'll see!
khooder,
I wish I had your conviction. I am not even up to 30 minutes straight yet.
A few years ago before my knees turned on me I was addicted. I mean I used to crave a run.
It is all so hard now...
Tomorrow I may try a spin class or maybe a night run. I dont know yet.
I will start doing that at least 3 early days a week when I go back to teaching Monday. (crosses fingers)
tamar --- what would give you the oomph to get up and go? any reward you could have in place?
i used to be addicted also. i am trying to get back into it. i sprained my ankle in April and it has taken about 2 or 3 months to recover. sometimes it still feels stiff. so i am trying to get back to that place where i can't bear to go a day without running.
tamar - running with pain is no fun. i can understand why it is so tough for you now. just dont rush it. you dont want to get hurt even more and really not be able to run.
olivia - what time do you have to get up to run? i need some motivation to reject my cozy bed when my alarm goes off. I alos want to get into a routine of 3 weekday morning runs and then my Saturday morning run, but it is just so hard. How do you do it?
khooder -- I have timed this to a science almost... All of June, I got up and jogged, showered, and had plenty of time. SO, I figure it takes me 5 minutes on a good day, to wake up, pee, change into shoes and workout clothes, and put Sugar dog into her harness.
I jog the same route every day (unless I cut it short 2/3), so I know it takes me almost exactly 25 minute from the door to door. I shower and am ready with wet hair in probably 20 minutes, maybe 30 if I blow dry. I need about 20 more minutes to chill and have a drink before hopping in the car, so I plan to get up at 5AM since carpool gets here at 6:30 on the dot.
hi dasluv, that is great! AM runs are great, i wish i could make myself remember that when i hit the snooze.
wow olivia, you do have that down! that is amazing! it takes me about 15 minutes at least just for peeing, brushing teeth, clothes and harnesses. i need to tighten up my routine. i think i can do it...i just need to get a pattern down.
i need to leave my house by 6:15am, no later to catch my vanpool for work. i am going to give it another shot tomorrow morning.
It has been so humid my last good run was sunday. So today I actually got up the energy to run when I got home from work!! I did HIIT this morning so it was kinda hard on the legs. I hope I sleep better tonight.
I find it much easier to just roll out of bed before the thought of hitting the snooze can even hit me. Put your alarm on the opposite side of the room. Once your up your up you won't go back to bed. But lately I have been so tired in the morning I just can't do it.
Sounds like we are all suffering with getting up for those early morning runs, I have been doing more and more on my lunch break lately because I just can't drag my arse out of bed!
I too LOVE the feeling when I am finally running in the morning, or when Ihave gotten home and the run is finished and my day is just starting, but the snooze button is so inviting. For me, depending on how long my run is, I get up anywhere between 5 and 5:30. I don't have to leave for work until 8, but I really need to be home by about 6:20, because thats around the time my 2.5 year old gets up and my husbands solution is just to put her in bed with him instead of actually getting up and getting with her (yes, I have a lazy husband!). She goes to daycare at my work so I need to have her and me ready by 8. If it was just me, I could probably sleep in until 6 or even 6:30, and still have plenty of time to make it out of the house by 8 even with an hour run! Wouldn't that be wonderful!
Olivia, I don't know HOW you manage to get out the door so quickly, I am usually stumbling around in the dark for at least 15 mins before I get out the door.
Fortunately, this week has been MUCH easier for me to get up because I am tapering for a race on Sunday, so my runs have been shorter than normal... its all mental. Had a fantastic interval session this morning (averaged an 8:45 min/mile, one of my best times yet!). A short 2 miles tomorrow morning and then the big race on Sunday... I can't wait!
i actually made it up this morning. i got up a little later than i should have, but i still managed to get 4.5 mi in, includding a few stops for the boys to sniff around. i felt great again.
manta - i hear that! this morning i was out the door w/ 2 boys on leash in 12 minutes (and i made record time). that is awesome that you can do all that in the morning! i have trouble getting my lunch and gym bag ready for work. good luck with your upcoming race! what race is it? is it a marathon? that is awesome!
