We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

I'm not a mathmetician, but by my calculations...if 20 runners will do 45 miles a week (average, obviously some will do more, others will do less), we can get around the world in 1 year...right?  20x45=900    We have approximately 6 weeks left.   900x6=5,400, and we have just under that to go...Can we do it?  Or is my run in the heat going to my head?????
7.7 miles yesterday in the heat and humidity.  Wanted to run more, but it was just too darn hot!!  Tried my new hydration waist pack and it worked wonderfully.  Holds my carb gels, my cell phone, truck key, and of course - my water!  Has a bite valve like the water backpacks.  Found the pack in the Zappos outlet  -- I work a second job in the fulfillment warehouse  on the weekends (3rd shift).  With the outlet price, a 20% store discount, and my 40% employee discount - it was a real bargain.  It will work great for the hiking and canoeing I do as well.  It's just nice to know I can do some longer runs and don't have to worry about stashing water or waiting for my husband to drive ahead on my routes with water.  I've had to change my long run day to Friday due to the weather and not wanting to take up a big chunk of my only day off (Sunday) during the week.  On Fridays, I am off from my teaching job and can run in the morning.  On Sundays, I sleep in until 11 because I don't get in until 4 in the morning from work - so I would have to run in the late afternoon - even more hot and humid than the mornings. 

June Challenge - Goal is 80 miles for the month (avg. 20 per week) -- so far a total of 44.1 miles for the last two weeks and I've already clocked almost 19 miles for this week - so I believe I will exceed my goal.  Woohoo!!  I've been able to up the mileage on my runs to at least five miles each run, so I am getting a good base.  Now I'll start increasing my Friday runs to get ready for the marathon mileage.  I've been doing most of my runs at the gym on the treadmill with an incline so I can do controlled speedwork and not keel over from the heat in the afternoon.  Long run Fridays will be outside unless there is severe weather so I build up the endurance for running on the road surface, in addition to dealing with the heat and humidity.

shannymedic - I had a serious problem with motivation not too long ago.  I didn't feel like running at all - but made myself run at least two miles before I could decide to call it a day.  Generally, once I got to the two mile point, I could push it to at least another mile.  The encouragement I received from the RATW runners was a great help!

Hmm, my 5,6and7 mile runs on saturday,sunday,monday didn't happen. The bi-termly trips between cardiff and oxford and packing up all my stuff really take it out of me. Yesterday I went sailing and fell asleep on the deck. When I woke up I was at a fairly scary angle but luckily I'd subconsciously held in really tight in my sleep!

Anyway, today I did 9.8 miles 

Please add 3.1 for me yesterday.

Did the 3rd sprint triathlon in as many weeks....dropped a full 6 minutes off last year:  0.5 from the swim, 1.0 from the bike, 1.0 from transitions, and 3.5 from the run.  Three more years of this kind of progress, and I'll be winning the event outright!

Now it's time to shift gears and train for the half Ironman in August.

Thanks for welcoming me back!  I think all my "friends" forgot about me because my last couple journal posts have no replies, but it's good to hear that someone in CC remembers me!  It's so good to read up on all of you too!

Hey, what exercises do you all do to make you a stronger runner?  Even though my injury (a labral acetabular tear) ended up not being caused by running, the several months of PT (which ended up being pointless for this kind of injury!) made me aware of how important it is to strenghten core muscles when running. 
5 miles for me today!

I'm back on track again and feeling great after some weeks of really bad runs. 6.08 miles of hills today :)

Hi everyone--I just got back from my trip to Boston. Had a wonderful time, but I haven't had a chance to check in with my mileage, so I'm taking care of that now. Please add another 21.5 miles since my last post (16.1 on Saturday, 5.4 on Sunday).

5 miles this morning

Thanks, everyone! I had a great birthday yesterday. And by "great" I mean extra-fattening: since Sunday I've had two fatty dinners, one cupcake and two different pieces of cake! Plus wine and champagne. The only bad part about it (well, besides getting old) is that I was too tired, hungover, fat or all of the above to put a dent in my 30 mile week yet. I have been running, but just short runs where I could fit them in. Which means I've gotta do a long run today in order to make up for it. Sigh.

Mmm, I love birthday dinners, Jenka!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you and wrm2105! I'm glad to hear Boston went well. Congrats to jfk for the amazing results!! WTG! Welcome back joyfulake!! I'll do free weights to get my arms/upper body, sit-ups/crunches for my abs (my inconsistently has proven to be my downfall as my abs are NOT the 6-pack shown by some women on the cover of Runner's World... sigh), and squats/leg bends for my legs. I spend less time there because I run, but I'll do squats every once in a while in the hopes that someday my thighs won't touch... if I dream it, I can achieve it -- isn't that how it goes? (in my dreams, I am a Kenyan...)

June Challenge Update: I got the 5K PR, and I'm only 5-ish miles from the 30 total miles in June. I'm hoping to either do the miles while in Egypt or the 2 days of the month I have left when I come back.

I feel like I've been very MIA recently. I'm blaming it on preparing for the trip to Egypt. Thanks to everyone who sent me advice either here or by PM! I'm really excited but a tad nervous. I'll be bringing my running shoes, but I won't post miles (if any!) until I get back.

Way off the training pace this week.  Only 6 miles for this last week.  Persistent forest fires south of me have made the air quality horrible for the last week.  So I am about 9 miles short of my goal for this last week.  Perhaps it can be made up.  We will see.

jenka: Isn't that part of the reason for running, so that you can enjoy the celebrations in life!  Feel no guilt or pressure for enjoying your birthday and the extra cake and the huge meals it is all part of the balance of life

lebrowne: Do you think it would be easier to find 20 runners for 45 miles or 45 runners for 20 miles each?  Hmmmm.....
