Hmmm ... my DH hasn't started folding things at dinner parties (yet!), but he really is the world's best suitcase packer. I just leave my clothes in a messy pile, and he can fit them so neatly in a suitcase, it's rather astonishing. And for the return trip home, he brings baggies for dirty clothes, even! OK, I cried a lot last night AFTER the nice family came and adopted Jeremy. I suppose that burned a few calories, at least. (sigh) I missed him this morning in the bathroom after I stepped out of the shower ... he used to wait for me on the counter for some still-wet pets and cuddles, then he would scoot into the shower to watch the drips. (Silly cat.) Still, we had a bed-full of furry-purry kitties last night, and I sure kept him in my thoughts and prayers, knowing his first scary night in a new place with new (nice) people would be frightening for him. Anyway, we are officially down to 13 cats ... 6 in the front half of the house and 7 in the back half of the house. (With several of the back half of the house cats brave enough to come for periodic visits out front ... which is nice ... since the front half of the house is the bigger half!) OK, I am off to tackle the laundry. I think it reproduces when we're not looking ... either that or my DH has taken to changing his clothes three times a day. =^..^= MOLLY |

Chris
Bummer about the ankle :-( I have lots of experience in this area, sigh, so make sure you, rest, ice, compress and elevate. Oh, if you know a sports physio get straight over there cos you'll be walking again in no time. If however you need an air cast let me know as I have TWO I could lend you! As Molly says, seize the opportunity to shop using the internet and also, get your family to wait on you hand and foot - it's about time! Finally, make sure you rant a lot - it's going to be your only way of burning calories for a day or two! Good luck! |

Original Post by chris1208: hee hee hee hee! Your comments reminded me of a few years ago, when I spent two weeks sizzling in Tucson, Arizona in the summer because my wonderful DH Ron was stationed there for the entire summer (lucky him!) Anyway, for my friends back home, I purchased a lovely -- yet incredibly tacky -- collection of scorpions in resin because, after all, "Nothing says I love you like a scorpion in resin"! (I wrote that in little scorpion-shaped note cards for everyone!) =^..^= MOLLY |

TUESDAY'S MENU ... GRILLED GREATS Once the fog and frost burned off this chilly grey December morning and the sunshine broke through, my spirits lifted as fast as the temperatures! I was quite industrious this morning ... feeding doggies and kitties, raking leaves (a never-ending story), doing laundry, and even washing kitchen and bath rugs. I even managed to fit in a quick bike ride ... WOO HOO! Anyway, I just had a delightful lunch, and have already meal-planned dinner ... and even took tuna out of the freezer for tomorrow night! (*Pats self on the back for all that advance planning!*) After all this planning, it's clear that I will have to venture out tomorrow to buy radishes, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, spinach cabbage and an acorn squash since, once again, my veggies are dwindling. I wanted something a little different for lunch, so I foraged in the freezer and selected two Boca vegan patties. I tossed them in the electric frying pan with 1/2 a cup of fresh onions, some minced garlic, and assorted spices. I toasted an english muffin ... and ate two burgers "open-faced" on the muffin halves (covered with scrumptious grilled onions), accompanied by a cup of sliced radishes (sprinkled with lemon pepper and a spritz of lemon juice), plus 8 ounces of steamed baby green beans with dill, lemon, and garlic.... YUM ... I love the smell, look and taste of grilled burgers! (And so, apparently, do the cats ... why am I now surrounded by purring felines???) Dinner tonight is centered around the leftover grilled lean organic sirloin from last night. To that I will add 8 ounces of roasted butternut squash with cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice, four servings of garlic-lemon steamed broccoli, and a cucumber - tomato - radish salad with Walden Farms zero-calorie balsamic vinaigrette. Wow ... that will be a lot of taste, color and crunch! (And I do think beef, butternut squash and broccoli are so pretty together on the plate, you know?) For me, the trick to meal planning isn't JUST counting calories (400 for lunch, 500 for dinner), but I also need to watch my carb percentages for the day (no more than 50% of my calories from carbs -- no more than 15% from fats, either), plus I always want to get in at least the RDA minimums for veggie servings, and I aim for at least 40g of fiber, too. So, by necessity, my "starch" for dinner is a rather modest serving of the squash ... because non-starchy veggies are just the best way to get in my carbs in a healthy, low-glycemic way! This healthy-eating, calorie-count approach has sure made me rethink how I used to eat. Before, I would've had a bigger serving of beef, probably something like a large baked potato with butter et al (yep, AND sour cream AND cheese), or even a double-portion of macaroni and cheese, and maybe a salad with high-fat dressing and topped with grated cheese and bacon bits. And I am sure a 200-calorie or so dessert probably would have followed. But, thankfully, those days are behind me! BREAKFAST two toasted Thomas' light multigrain english muffins (200 calories) four slices of oven-roasted turkey (100 calories) LUNCH two Boca vegan burgers, grilled (200 calories) one toasted Thomas' light multigrain english muffin (100 calories) one-half cup grilled onions (34 calories) eight ounces of steamed green beans (50 calories) one cup of sliced radishes (19 calories) DINNER 8 ounces of lean, grilled organic sirloin (225 calories) 8 ounces of roasted butternut squash w/cinnamon (102 calories) 4 servings of steamed broccoli (100 calories) one medium cucumber, peeled/diced (24 calories) one large tomato, diced (33 calories) one cup of sliced radishes (19 calories) CALORIE TOTAL: 1205 (does not include after-dinner snacks) FIBER TOTAL: 58 grams VEGGIE TOTAL: 14 servings NUTRITION REPORT: ( 10.2% fat / 39.7% protein / 50.1% carbs) =^..^= MOLLY |

Molly, I just had to tell you about this today:
I love reading your posts, but I am always taken aback (in a good way!) by the massive amounts of veggies you integrate into your diet. If everyone ate veggies like you do, we would all live forever. Normally, though, I don't get as many servings as you do. I usually get my 5-a-day but that's about it. I tend to eat more starches and stuff at my meals. Well, today I went out with my boyfriend for lunch at our favorite Japanese place to celebrate the end of the semester. Their food is to die for, but my lunch ended up being much higher calorie than usual. So I was thinking, what to do for dinner that isn't high calorie or high fat? And then I remembered you and your veggies, and I literally thought "I'll pull a mollymouser tonight!" So what I did was roast a ton of veggies in the oven with a little butter-flavored cooking spray, lemon juice, and spices, and I must say a big "MMMMM!" I had forgotten how good plain, natural veggies, dressed up with a little seasoning, can be. The onions caramelized in the oven and gave the rest of the veggies (broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, zucchini, and garlic) a delicious slightly sweet flavor. And it was all super low in calories and fat, yet high in volume and health benefits, so I don't feel guilty about lunch (which actually wasn't that bad--salmon, rice, and broccoli. It just had quite a bit of oil.) So, thanks for always harping at us to "eat our veggies", because it sure came in handy tonight and reminded me of how delicious the veggie life can be. :) |

YAY!!!! Veggies are our friends!!! ::: giggle ::: You know, the main reason I eat so many veggies is because I really can't eat too much of anything else and still get a nice QUANTITY of food, ya know? Because I need to limit my carbs to 50% of my daily calories (and not go lower than 47% for blood sugar reasons), and because I need to limit my fats to 15% (because of cholesterol and triglyceride reasons) ... that pretty much means I need to eat veggies ... and in an IMPRESSIVE quantity. And I figure if I need to eat them, and they are so good for me, why not jump in with both feet and just learn to love 'em? Your grilled veggies sound delightful ... flavorful, colorful, tasty, filling, and loaded with vitamins and minerals and fiber! (But I'm still not eating cauliflower!) =^..^= MOLLY |

Molly, You have obviously never tried cauliflower in 2 delectable recipes (my mother's and grandmother's) 1. ok so originally it was cauliflower breaded and deep fried - yummy but we know thats a big no no. so I tried dipping them in a beated egg (egg white only is fine too - and you can add your choice of seasoning to the egg) and then coat them wither with some kind of cereal or homemade bread crumbs (bread in the blender) - into the oven and yummy!!! I make a soy and honey sauce to go with it... 2. Cauliflower pie: 1 cooked cauliflower, 4 tbspn flower, 1 tbspn of soup powder, 1 egg, 1 shreeded onion, season as you like - in the oven - also yummy!!! I tried cutting down the flower with oatmeal - it didnt work so well. Ok so those are great cauliflower recipes but you can try them with any veggie - (zucchini broccoli...) .

RANT I am buying some life insurance and some of you young folks may not be aware of this but once you get to a certain age, they make you prove that you're not about to die soon. A nurse was scheduled to stop at my house Monday morning to take information and various bodily fluids. I remembered she was coming but for some STUPID reason totally forgot that I wasn't supposed to eat. I'd already had about 3 oz of orange juice and a bite of oatmeal when I remember. OK, reschedule. She comes today at 7:30 AM. I have blood drawn (ouch, she wasn't gentle!) and the joy of peeing in a cup before breakfast. She also weighed me and her scale read significantly higher than mine (and the analytical quality one at work, I might add.) This did not make for a particularly happy start to my day. Oh, and I guess I didn't meantion that I'm 49 today. Sigh. |

Hello! This is my first post though I've been lurking for about a month. I've really enjoyed this thread you all are hilarious :) Today I have a rant. It's about shoes. First of all let me say that my rant makes the assumption that the majority of people who purchase shoes have 5 toes on each foot. But I believe that the shoe designers have been designing for the more highly evolved people who have managed to get rid of their supposedly superfluous pinky toe. This is the only explanation that I can find for shoes that fit everywhere except where my pinky toe is and leave my poor toe to get painful blisters if I walk or run anywhere. Am I talking about silly pointy toe stilleto shoes? No! I'm talking about Nikes. NIKES!!!! (please don't sue me Nike). I've tried wide shoes I rattle around in them *sigh* guess I just have weird feet. [end rant] PS. Thanks for this thread it always makes my day. |

Poor Chris. Why is it that the only people they will sell life insurance to are the ones that don't need it lol? I hate peeing on demand, too. It gives me that suspected feeling.... and the only way to defend my honor is in the outcome of the tests. My reputation hanging in the balance over a plastic cuppy of urine. Why don't we use our modern technology to improve on this system? |

I agree about the shoes!!! And this thread, lol! Love the suggestion of suspected evolutionists being to blame...!!! Very convincing-ly written, lol! Good ranting technique! Shoulda' burned some healthy calories! |

DIETING LESSONS LEARNED FROM MY CAT EIGHT POUNDS TO GO . . .As I lay in bed this morning along with Daniel, Miss Cricket, and Pumpkin and watched a bevy of birdies and one fluffy-tailed red squirrel ransack our backyard bird feeders, I watched Pumpkin enjoy one of those long, leisurely, delightful s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s that only felines seem to be able to imitate. Pumpkin saw that I was finally awake and wandered over for a few head-bonks and cheek scratchies and rewarded me with a quick lick and a heartfelt, chest-rumbling purr. What a sweet cat Pumpkin is .... with his creamy white fur and his dashing orange tabby stripes. He and his brother Smudge (both rescues, of course) had been adult feral cats that we "reclaimed" after they'd been trapped and neutured and I fell in love with them at the no-kill shelter. Anyway, they've been delightful additions to our menagerie and have taught me a lot about second chances, trust, and redemption. Pumpkin, I discovered, weighs about 8 pounds. Funny, that is how many more pounds I need to lose to drop below the 300 mark for the first time in I don't know how long. Just 8 more pounds. One cat's worth of weight. It's out there ... I can feel it ... just lurking around the corner, waiting for me to walk down the hall so it can joyfully POUNCE on me. 8 pounds. There's no use for me looking at a calendar and sitting down and doing some esoteric math problem to see when this will occur ... my body apparently doesn't believe in calendars and deadlines any more than it believes in scales, LOL! So, all I can do is keep on "keeping on" ... meeting my calorie goals, meeting my fiber goals, meeting my activity/exercise goals, taking my vitamins, playing with my puppies, petting my kitties, and curling up with Pumpkin. Watching for that elusive "299" on the scale is a lot like approaching a formerly-feral kitty cat like Pumpkin. If I do what I am supposed to do and just sit quietly, Pumpkin will feel comfortable and will approach me, with happy headbonks and peaceful purrs. But, sometimes, if I am over-eager and startle him by reaching out too quickly, he shies away and skitters off under the bed. Soooo .... I will just do what I am supposed to do and will wait quietly for the scale to show 299. Pumpkin and I will wait together. =^..^= MOLLY |

Original Post by chris1208: Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday!!! CONFESSION: I cannot pee in a cup without removing all of my clothing from the waste down (including shoes and socks) and I always manage to pee all over my hand in the process. Ick Ick Ick Ick. I swear I must spend 15 minutes after the process is complete just cleaning up the mess I've managed to make. And when I've had to do this in doctor's offices, I am sure the nurse must wonder just what the heck I am DOING in there for so long. And, one other thing, is it just me or do pee-in-a-cup requirements ALWAYS hit during my TOM? Oh. Sorry if this was too much information for y'all ... but I just had to rant about this topic! (Men just have it so much easier than we do, ya know?) I think doctor's office and other "foreign" scales are a lot like those grumpy russian judges at the Olympics ... they NEVER give you the score that you're looking for! =^..^= MOLLY |
