What is your target breakdown of fats / proteins / carbs .... and WHY?
I don't do percentages. I tend not to look at them at all. But the actual grams per day is the big deal. Fat: 30 - 45 grams per day (last week was 48... must improve!) Protein: 65 - 80 per day (last week was 64.2... must improve!) Carbohydrates: 150 - 200 per day (last week was good). Calorie Intake I try to keep between 1300 - 1500 most days, and bring it up to 1800 when I feel like it. This is right on target with a question of my own!!! Is there any problems (other than the discomfort/BMs/etc) of having too much fiber in one day? From my measurements, I got up to 46 grams of fiber today. I guess I shouldn't have Ronzoni Smart Pasta (6 g per serving, and I usually eat a minimum of 2 servings) on the same day I have my Fiber One Cereal (10 - 14 g per serving, depending on the serving size)?? |

I regularly eat more than 70g of fiber each day, with no adverse health impact (except initially as my body adjusted to all that fiber.) In fact, in many parts of the world (especially China and elsewhere in Asia), the average daily fiber consumption is 77g per day -- compared to 15g per day in the US. At some point, consumption of fiber does inhibit very slightly the absorption of some vitamins. Of course, with all my veggies and healthy eating (plus a multivitamin), I am probably so overloaded with vitamins and nutrients that having a few of them blocked is a good thing, LOL! And, of course, fiber contributes to feeling full, helps deter colon and related cancers, and is well-documented to help lower blood cholesterol. (My cholesterol has dropped about 50 points, by the way.... and is now in the normal range.) MOLLY THE FIBER QUEEN |

Thanks for the snack ideas! The peppers sound especially delicious...and if I ever make those granola barsI mentioned I'll be sure to share the recipe. : ) So, I haven't had time to weigh myself in the mornings, and haven't seen my "real weight" (sometimes I'll hop on out of curiousity, but I never let the numbers phase me because that;s normally not long after I eat) in a week or two. and hey, I've lost 2.5 pounds! weird! normally that takes me about three or four or five weeks, lol.... : ) it was pretty exciting. What is your target breakdown of fats / proteins / carbs .... and WHY? I personally shoot for 20-30-50 fats-protein carbs because I feel that it keeps me the fullest and gives me the most overall energy, especially if it's a long run day. I'm never upset if it's leaning more to one side, though, and I figure that as long as my fat is coming from good stuff (almond butter is my new favorite thing! amazing on everything, especially kashi golean crunch or oatmeal...mmm, with some banana or fruit, it's soo good, I forget it's good for me! keeps me full till lunch!) It's okay if it's more like 25-25-50.... Overall, though, the more protein, the better. : ) Molly, that is amazing! You really are the fiber queen, congrats on the drop in cholesterol. |

Original Post by melly991: I would like to congratulate you!!!! I cannot wait for that day for myself, and I think you should try to stay focused on big concepts like being fit versus being whatever percentage fat. I look to people like you to help encourage me, and I thank you for posting your progress! For me, it's nice to know that people can make big progress and big changes without the help of personal trainers or being on The Biggest Loser. Thanks again!! |

Hi, I hope I can jump on the bandwagon here and see if I can accomplish some of my goals for the summer. (: 1. exercise 6 days a week! 3-4 days weight training, 4-5 days cardio (rest day on Sundays) 2. drink enough water 3. get into excellent shape! I'm not sure how much I weigh now (I haven't had access to a scale for a while) but I'd say anywhere from 115-120 lbs. I'm 5', so that's not a great weight, want to lose anywhere from 10-15 lbs. Weight's not that important to me, but I just want to end up looking toned and in great health! 4. get a ratio of 40% protein, 40% carbs, 20% fat. I need to get more protein in for all that weight training! 5. make every day count! I want to make every day an important day and just make sure by the end of the summer, I won't be going back to college and feeling like this was another uneventful summer.

* waves hello to everyone * May 22 is my 9th month anniversary of healthy eating and I am 93.4 pounds less than I was this time last year, woo hoo! In honor of this special occasion, I biked 9 miles on Wednesday, and had 90g of fiber!!! And to think, 9 months ago, I had a hard time walking to the mailbox! WE CAN DO THIS! I really had to work hard to reduce my carbs and to increase my protein consumption ... I think we are a carb-centric nation. Anyway, I've successfully added more protein ... tuna, salmon, cottage cheese, egg whites, turkey, low fat cheese, plus I am eating a high protein/low carb bagel every day, too! I better go drink some water, posting here always reminds me to do that! MOLLY |

And congrats on your loss Molly! I hope in 9 months I am doing as well as you. I admit, a part of my is scared of HUGE weight loss, because I don't want the big loose skin. BUT if it means I get healthier, then I guess I will suck it up if I have to. |

QUESTION OF THE DAY: MAY 22 What's one so-called "diet food" that you really detest/dislike/avoid/hate? MOLLY
I've gotta say, I have no idea how people eat those sugar-free, fat-free puddings. Blech. I also cannot eat those aspartame sweetened fat-free or even low fat yogurts. I feel like I'm going to gag. I have finally found a yogurt that I actually like though, it is the Fage yogurt with strawberry. It's not too bad for calories (140) and tastes delicious, giving me calcium and (my new concern) some protein. Best of all, I actually enjoy eating it. I also have no idea how people eat fat-free or light cool whip. That's stuff is nothing but chemicals and grossness. I know it works for a lot of people but I just can't get past the ingredients list. I've never actually tasted it. I mean, original cool whip squicks me out with the high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils. It's just interesting how different we all are. I suppose I am lucky in one sense that I am relatively unaffected by sodium. I eat frozen packaged foods for lunches most days and it doesn't bother me in the least. Of course, even at my highest weight, I never had bad cholesterol or blood pressure, despite being a smoker. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their encouraging words. I really need to focus on my accomplishments and my fitness. I feel so good now a lot of the time whereas when I used to wake up fat and a smoker I just felt hopeless that I would ever find the resolve to change. It's amazing that one day I just had the resolve, out of nowhere. It kind of makes me think that we have it all along, we just aren't ready to see that we have it. Anyway, thanks again to everyone who had kind things to say about my progress. I would love to hear suggestions about incorporating more protein into my diet :) |

What's one so-called "diet food" that you really detest/dislike/avoid/hate?
I didn't know that cottage cheese "was" a diet food... I look at the Calories and think... "I don't wanna eat that." So I don't. Assuming it is a diet food, it's the one I tolerate but don't particularly like. But in all honesty, I really don't eat diet food. I just eat healthy. I have salads (if I can find them) at lunch, and some chicken with broccoli or some other green thing at dinner. And breakfast... I should just go all out. Always ends up at 500 Calories for breakfast anyways no matter what I eat. |

I am very open to light/low-fat/diet options in many things and have been for a long time. My "yuck" factor is fairly new: I love light/fat-free yogurt, but these new "dessert-style" creations, the ones that are chocolate (I think it is Yoplait and they have purple labels ... chocolate mousse, chocolate mint, creamy latte) ... tried them, threw them out. Nobody in my house would eat them, even the dog. It was like putting a spoonful of drain cleaner in my mouth, all I could taste was chemicals. Ah well, the Key Lime Pie flavor has served me well for many years, I guess I should stick with it! |

I'm not fond of celery. It's mostly the little stringy things that don't always break off when you bite it. It's like a food that's trying to floss my teeth while I eat it. Now if you chop it up, and cook it in a soup until it's mushy, I'm fine with it. |

Original Post by mollymouser: Fat-free yogurt. The last time I had it, it was all runny and blehhh. The taste was OK, but the consistency left much to be desired.. |

diet food I hate: Anything that has fake sugar in it. This dislike for any fake sugar limits my sweets intake and at times causes calorie overage as I end up choosing real sugar items that are higher in cals but I just can't stand the taste, even splenda. Stevia does something weird to my digestion so I have to keep eating the real sugar when I need a fix. Luckily, fruits really satisfy my cravings for sweets nowadays so "I've got that goin' for me, which is good" <---- anyone know the reference? Got up this morning and skated for 15 minutes with the dogs, not as long as I wanted but I have my strength training tonight so I should reach my activity goal this week, no problem. Went to Yoga last night, so lovely and relaxing as well as challenging. The scale has not been too cooperative lately but at least I feel good. Happy Thursday all!! |

Being diabetic, I had to get over my dislike for sugar alternatives years and years ago, LOL! Now, I just try to be aware of how many different foods seem to feel the need to add saccharine, aspartame, sucralose and sugar alcohols ... even things (like bread products) that aren't supposed to be sweet-tasting!!! Some days, reading labels can be a scary thing! Then again, it's just as bad seeing high fructose corn syrup in everything else!!!
I don't do yogurt any longer... it's really not that nutritious, anyway. Sure, fat free yoplait yogurt has just 100 calories, but that includes about 20g of sugar ... plus a wee bit of protein and calcium. I have found that there are better uses in my day for those 100 calories .... and if I want sweet, I can have a medium sized apple for 72 calories ... which includes vitamins and pectin and fiber and is much slower-burning, blood sugar wise. That saves me about 30 calories and it's a healthy choice. I'm not much into those sugar free / fat free puddings, either.... 60 calories for that little cup? I can have six little cups of sugar free jello for 60 calories, and I think I enjoy it more. (Or 4 sugar free Popsicles.) Rice cakes. OK, who invented those round little coaster-sized pieces of white cardboard and convinced people to eat them, anyway? They are ridiculously high in carbs, too ... and just send my blood sugar skyrocketing. Frankly, if I'm going to spike my blood sugar, it better be for something tastier than a plain ol' rice cake, LOL! Meal Replacements.... what a contradiction in terms, huh? They aren't really a meal, and they sure don't replace "real food" in my opinion. I think that's just marketing jargon to make me feel virtuous about eating a 250 calorie shake or candy bar while pretending that's a healthy alternative. Frankly, I don't want to "replace" my meals ... I want to thoroughly enjoy eating my meals, LOL! Granted, to eat healthy and lose weight we need to make better choices about what we eat for meals ... but we certainly don't need to "replace" meals with any sort of shake, bar, or pre-packaged, sodium-filled, not-all-that-filling frozen dinner. Original Post by bintzp: I know "So I've got that going for me, which is nice" is from Caddyshack, when Bill Murray and Chevy Chase are in Bill's "house", and Bill is just talking and talking and Chevy is just trying to get his ball back and play through ... That is a funny FUNNY movie. |

I should amend to say I really don't eat much food that would be considered diet food. I eat the food I like, just a measured portion of it. And I've always been right behind you Molly on rice cakes. However, on a whim, I picked up some chocolate rice cakes as an idea of something on which to eat my cottage cheese and it was so tasty. Now of course I'm not diabetic and I need lots of carbs to fuel all my workouts so I don't have those problems, but I just never liked them. Now, I just ate one with a small container of 2% cottage cheese w/ a teensy bit of splenda sprinkled on top and it was so good! Adds another 12 grams of protein to my day. Man, this is going to be difficult. |
