bradstreet:

First of all...HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Absolutely we're in this together. I'm pretty sick of my own excuses and those submitted on my behalf by well meaning friends/relatives. I also think the concept of being "on" a diet is the wrong idea completely...its common sense...if you make poor decisions about what and how much you eat you suffer the consequences...if you make wise decisions you reap the rewards.

A long time ago I had a friend that, much to the surprise of our group of friends, was addicted to drugs. Try as we might we couldn't talk/bribe/beg her into making changes and one day she ended up in the emergency room fighting for her life. She emerged from this ready to make her own changes. I guess I draw some parallels between this and who I was before I decided to make a change in my life. Friends and family pleaded wih me to start being concerned...the media bombarded me with articles about the dangers of my lifestyle...I halfheartedly (and foolishly) tried the pills and everything from grapefruits to cabbage just to shut everyone up but deep down inside even though I hated what I saw in the mirror I didn't really want to change. Luckily my catalyst wasn't the emergency room or something traumatic but rather the news that my wife and I have a child on the way...our first...and for whatever reason it opened my eyes completely.

It is awesome that you are so driven and committed and I for one think you will go the distance. The question is whether means to getting there is really what you want. If you are on a 1200 calorie a day diet you are already placing your system in starvation mode. Men need a bare minimum of 1500 calories a day just for their organs to continue functioning correctly. Anything less than this and your body starts to work against you in a myriad of ways including setting you up for even more weight gain once you resume anything more that 1200 calories a day. You can poke around the forums here and you'll see LOTS of postings about this (http://www.calorie-count.com/forums/post/4815.html). If you go to (on the calorie-count menus) Tools -->Allowance and plug in your values this will give you a pretty decent (and safe) level of calories you should be shooting for based on your age, size, weight, and activity level.

Just my 0.02...

BTW - I'm also a software developer...maybe we should invent a treadmill desk ;)

Ostrogoth:

Oh PLEASE invent that treadmill desk. I am behind the computer for 8-9 hours a day. The good thing is that the bathroom is a FAR walk from my office, but that is basically the only daytime exercise I get. I could walk at lunch, but I work in an old factory building that still sees heavy semi traffic on the far end of the building. An excuse yes, but I still don't feel comfortable.

I found out I've been drinking TOO much water today. I was having 8 bottles, instead of 8 servings. I thought I was feeling a little bloated and I figured out why!!

Apparently I've been beaten to the punch....it has already been invented.

Hey! If I log on to this site everyday, I will get my daily dose of motivation. I have narrowed down my eat out options. "If" I decide to eat out I have narrowed my options to Subway, Sweet Tomatoes and Thai. That is being realistic. I won't let these fast food places take my money or my life. It's Friday! congrats to all that met their goals this week and have a healthy weekend! Hope to hear "less" of all of you next week :)

I would love to join!  After having my son two years ago, the weight has just been coming and coming.  At my highest point I weighed 309.  I finally decided enough was enough, and I've been trying to lose some of that weight.  I'm down to 264 now (lost most of it in the past three months), and want to get down to 200 by the end of this year.  Hopefully I'm able to make that goal.  I'm walking daily (have a new lifestyles pedometer that i LOVE--trying to get 10,000 steps a day, but hoping to get up to 15,000 by July) and doing a few exercise videos when I get the time (not much of it with a two year old running around).  :)

I know how you feel Michelle. I had my daughter 2 years ago and I gained 40lbs and still have to lose some of my "baby weight" I currently weigh 200lbs and hope to get down to 110lbs by the end of the year (I'm short)

Best luck!

Hi , It's Saturday ! Hope everyone has a restful and sucessful weekend. So far so good. I start counting cal. today. Up to today I was working on eating 3 meals a day and trying to drink water . I have the water thing in now. I drink aprox 4 bottles. its a start. Haven't had any junk and believe me they have been passing candy right under my nose at the lunch table. Trying to keep up with the cal thing is going to be work for me but I'll try .  Keep up the good work everyone :)   vicky

Sigh...

Well, I have been weighing on Saturdays.  I've been having 1300-1900 calories each day this last week, and consuming 2500-3200 each day.  But, dagnabit, the scales went up 1.5 pounds.  The  only thing I can think is that my arthritis is screaming, and that I'm retaining fluids.  Of coures, I'm sticking with it... and, I should say my pants feel more comfortable.  I was just really hoping that the scale would at least stay the same...

Hi everybody,

You guys and gals are saving my life.  I've let myself blimp out to  231 over the last 2 years, using the excuse that I'm teaching 7-7 and I don't have time to deal with this.  I miss my nice clothes that I bought 4 yrs ago when I started teaching!  You all are very motivating and here's what's helping me over the last 4 days:

1.  log that food!  it's amazing how the calories add up (be honest with those serving sizes)

2.  staying within a calorie count each day is a great goal

3.  water, water everywhere.  Bottles are great, keep one with you whereever you go.  It's easier when you sip constantly.

4.  No matter how tired you are at the end of the day, get up and go for at least 1/2 mile walk.  Then if you truly can't go anymore, go home.  BUT I find the hardest is getting my shoes on & getting out the door.  Once, I'm 1/2 mile away, I find it's more important to keep walking than to go home.

THANKS!!

p.s.  I gotta find that video yoga for the inflexible?

hello everyone!! i would love to join this group also. right now i am the heaviest i have ever been in my life and it has really scared me. my little boy is 2 & 1/2 and i gained about 60 lbs when i had him and i am still trying to get it off. i have no one to blame but myself so now i am going to do something about it. i am tired of feeling "heavy".

weekends are usually the hardest for me because i am tempted to snack all day but i am staying out of the kitchen.

bye for now

This site has really helped me out. I am a teacher and we are currently on winter break. Usually I would have snacked all day during the break (on junk food). This year I took the week off of calorie counting during christmas and new Years and was very proud of the fact that I did not stuff myself. I also noticed when I got back on the scale that I had not gained a pound. I had lost 9 pounds before then. I went from a 227 to 218 in the last month. Since joining this site in early December. This last week has really helped me be accountable for what I am eating. It also helps to hear about other peoples struggles and successes. You all are great keep up the good work. By the way this morning I got on the scale and it 215lbs. Yeah!! All that calorie counting and exercise is really paying off.

Whoops. I went to Dairy Queen. But ya know what? All that did was motivate me to come home at walk 3 miles in an hour. And you know what? I feel better. Not excited about the dessert, but it's almost like I needed that slip to give myself a kick in the rear.

Keep up the good work everyone! My next weigh in is Wednesday... a week and a day from my start date. Hopefully I see a 2-3 pound loss :-)

I am unhealthy.  I have chosen to change my lifestyle.  At 230 lbs my ankles and knees hurt when I do activities that I loved- I want to be able to do these things again.

I started my new lifestyle on Jan. 2nd 2006- watching my portions, calorie intake, and exercising at least 30 minutes a day.  And even though it has been only a few days I am feeling better already!  I put away all of the junk food.  I am buying foods that are good for me- I am finding that I can actually eat more because the foods I am eating are healthy for me and less calories than the junk food I was eating.

I wish everyone the courage to keep trying...don't give up!  I have promised myself and my daughter that I won't stop.  I'll keep you all posted!

I'm just starting this.  Yes... over 200.  217 to be exact and 5'3.  I never thought I'd be at this weight  but reality is here and I am ready to face it.  Thank you for all your comments.  I am looking forward to losing weight with you!

I connect everyday to see what people have written.  This place gives me so much encouragement because so many people feel the same way I do.  It will be one week on Wednesday that I started here.  And I can't believe how counting calories really helps.  It gives me a goal and is sort of a competition to see if I can reach that goal of so many calories per day (or rather not go past the alloted calories per day).   I found on a couple of days that I was well under my alloted calories but I was full.  Do I still need to eat the total amount of cals. per day to keep my metabolism rolling well or is it okay to not eat if not hungry but yet under the number.

Good for you anne,

We go back to school on Monday and I'm hoping it helps me get thru the day!  I bought Kashi bars and plan to pack my lunch the night b4.  I only started 1/3 so I've got a lonnnnng way to go.  I was 231, lost 3.5 pounds but it's going to be hard to find time to exercise once we go back. I hope to get up and walk around the school each planning period just to try to keep my metabolism going somewhat. I'll try to exercise after school.

Hi everybody,

I weighted myself this morning, after my first week, and I had lost 4 pounds ;) but I know it's not really all fat but water. Anyway it was nice to see 220 instead of 224. The second week starting tomorrow will be different; first week at work...but I will schedule my exercices for each days and will not find any excuses. It's incredible how motivated I'm actually, after reading all your posts and knowing that everybody is serious about losing weight...Somes of you really stimulated me to focus on exercices and good healthy choices...thank you so much!
