I was bored because you were all working Wink

Oh guys just heard there's been an earthquake in California?!

Oh?  Didn't feel it.

*goes to research*
Looks like it was a 5.8 or so, about 50 km from Los Angeles (and therefore, about 650 km from me.)

oh, excuse my ignorance, but is that a bad one? we don't really get them in Scotland.

I'm glad it didn't reach you sparky Smile

yah 5.8 in Chino Hills.

A lot of scientists are afraid SoCal will get a 7.8+ in the next 30 years.  I've heard some saying its 99% likely.

The one that hit China was an 8.0 Andy.

Based on my [limited] geological study, I agree with that likelihood, Dave.

It's a moderate quake, Andy.  It scared some people, but there probably wasn't much property damage.

****! that's not good......Frown

If the 7.8 does hit will that reach you?

I've experienced 7+ magnitude earthquakes before.  They scare the everliving crap out of you.  Living in the Bay Area, too, it's pretty frightening to consider what will happen to the infrastructure when (not "if") The Big One hits.
There will likely be a Big One down there, and also at least one up where I am, too.

man that is bad......I'd freak we Brits are so naive with stuff like this!

so are we new englanders! worst thing we get is hurricanes!

Yeah, 7.8 is big.  The quake that triggered the tsunamis in the Indian Ocean a few years ago was a 9.3 though, second largest ever recorded to the 1960 Chile earthquake.

We had Hurricane Hugo come through Charlotte in the 80's... nothing since then.

I'm glad I'm not alone jules, we get all of them over here but in a small scale very rarely we get anything that causes more than a few trees to fall over.

*considers*

Maybe I WILL move to Texas with my sister... at least you know when a hurricane's on its way.  Not much warning with earthquakes, unless you have constant access to seismographic equipment, and even then, not always.

Gonna be worrying about you now sparky Frown
