RANTING BURNS CALORIES!

This is an open, ongoing, support-encourage-motivational-RANTING thread. Feel free to skip to the end, or spend days reading through all of this ...

* * *

I have decided that "Diet" is a 4-letter word.

I find myself muttering and uttering the word around my house these days with loathing and vehemence previously reserved only for comments directed toward liberal politicians. In fact, I seem to be talking to myself a lot more these days .... sort of a running, sarcastic commentary on all the foods I can't eat, or on various other related topics. I wonder if there is a link between calorie-deprivation and Tourettes Syndrome? Grrrrrrrrr.....

I am now on Day 8 of the dreaded D-word. This is already the longest period of time that I have ever successfully remained on a diet. And I seem to be growing grouchier and feistier each day..... at least when I am alone and no one is around to hear my running rants. (My wonderful DH has heard some of my more memorable rants on the subject of broccolli and reports that I am hysterically funny when I am hungry!) I am counting carbs. I am counting calories. I am counting fat grams. Sheesh ... now my math anxiety is about to kick-in!

Mini Rant #1 .... what masochist decided that the serving size of cereal was anything less than 2 cups? Have you ever measured out 2/3 a cup of cereal? Or even a full cup? And placed it in a bowl? Those few little flakes and pieces just sit forlornly at the bottom of the bowl, shivering and lonely, even when we dribble on a few meager droplets of skim milk! Sheesh. Well, I can tell you that there is simply no way that my oversized body is going to be happy with that tiny amount of cereal ... so I have been eating TWO servings for breakfast. SIGH. And while the side of the box says that I can supplement the cereal with some fruit, they probably don't mean eat 45 cherries with your cereal -- much less 1/2 a watermelon, huh?

Mini Rant #2 .... Things NOT to say to someone who has told you that they have just started on a diet:

1.Good, you sure needed it.
2. It's about time.
3. Really? It doesn't look like it.
4. Again? Haven't we heard this before?
5. Gosh, how much weight do you need to lose?
6. What do you weigh? I've always wondered.
7. I never need to diet, I have a fast metabolism.
8. Really? I can eat all I want and never gain weight.
9. Is THAT why you are so grouchy?
10. I sure hope you plan to exercise a lot more.

AAAUGGH! All of these responses are just the thing to make me even grouchier .... so just smile and say something encouraging and supportive, ok? I will let you know how it is going.

I just tried brown rice for the first time yesterday and it was so so. I perfer jasmaine, yummo! I cooked it and it had this hard taste to it so I thought I didnt cook it long enough, so I tried it again this morning and its the same way. So I am guessing thats the way it is, kinda like wild rice. Soooo I think I'll stick to my jasmaine and just eat a lil less of it. I love rice with egg whites, onions and mushrooms YUM!

Sarah

Brown rice takes WAY longer than white to cook - 30-40 minutes from memory.  Once cooked, it's quite nutty, but not hard, imho.

Ok everyone, listen up, I have a rant!

Why, when you've had something arranged for ages, does something happen at the last minute to ruin it, grrrr?  Tonight I'm meeting old friends for a "Christmas" get together (yes, I know it's still November, but scheduling is always tricky!).  Earlier this week someone dropped out - the one person I would have predicted, so no real surprise there!  Today though, one of the party has had a disaster at work and is unlikely to make it!  I've been SO looking forward to the dinner and now we're down to 7!  I'm wondering how many will actually make it to the restaurant tonight...

Seriously, I haven't seen most of these people for ages and know that they'll say really nice things about my weight loss.  We'll have a great time however many of us there are, of course.  Plus I get steak for dinner, drool...

I like brown rice very much but often have trouble waiting for it to cook (insert image of teenage boy tapping his foot and drooling menacingly).  I tried off brand instant brown rice and while it's 'edible', not great. Uncle Ben's instant, on the other hand, is a lot more like regular cooked brown rice.  Strangely, I don't think UB's regular brown rice takes as long to cook either although it seems to take a little longer than the package claims.

Thanks for the brown rice tips, I will keep them in mind if and when I try it again.Cool Off to go move my tush!

I share this rant... We had our annual ladies holiday dinner on Nov. 19, planned way in advance. I think it was supposed to be 9 and we ended up being 4.

On the plus side, the food was AMAZING!!! Also steak... and seafood. My two faves. YUUMMMY. Have fun ;)

Wow, gone for a couple of days, and I'm having a hard time keeping up!!!

Molly, I loved this:  Veni, Vedi, Veggie! (I came, I saw, I had a salad!)

Brown rice is so much better for you than white, it's worth learning to love.  Of course, I also love brussels sprouts.  Maybe there's a theme here.  And my 15 yo son has loved lima beans almost from infancy.  Hmmm.  And as the youngest of 5 children (and only girl), I grew up eating the chicken back at Sunday dinner.    Hmmmm again.

Christmas outings with the ladies:  I'm going to one in a couple of weeks.  Planned location is an Ethiopian restaurant.  Anybody know anything about them?  I understand they serve the table as a whole and everyone digs into some stews with flatbread and no utensils.  (!!!)  I'm pretty open-minded about that, but I'm worried about fat & sodium.  Please chime in if you can give any advice on this!

#888 meganr Nov 29 2007 19:58

I am very fond of Ethipian food, the bread is called injera and it's a sort of a spongy bread that you tear into pieces and use to scoop up the food.  Yup, with your hands.  Here's a link to an Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant in my area, you can see some photos of the food and look at the menu.    http://www.asmararestaurant.com/index.html

I would think that the menu is probably similar to what is offered wherever you are going.  Not sure about sodium content, probably higher than what you're used to, since most restaurant food is.  I've only had the vegetarian dishes, so can't recommend anything on the omnivore part of the menu - the lentil stews are very tasty.

#889 pattikins Nov 29 2007 20:20

Thanks for the link, Megan!  I think it's a good thing we're all good friends going together. I predict food spills on my "shelf." Also good that I'm taking the remainder of the day off from work.

I love lentils, too, and have been eating way less meat lately. I'll probably love the food.

TODAY'S MENU ... SALMON AND SQUASH

With only two days left of November, I want to be sure to eat a healthy diet so my November Nutrition Report will be one I can be proud of. I stepped on the scale this morning for an USWID (unofficial sneaky weigh-in day) and I've lost absolutely NOTHING since last Sunday. I can't say that I was totally surprised, since my PMS time just ended and my TOM has started. Still, I was hopeful and just a wee bit grouchy at the lack of scale movement. (I know, I know, I should be grateful that I didn't gain!) Anyway, since I can't focus on the scale today, I decided to focus on eating well!

Brown rice??? Brown rice!?!?!?  Brown rice is so ... so.... last month!!! (LOL!)

Brown rice .... one cup cooked ... 218 calories / 45.8 carbs / 3.5g fiber / 4.5g protein

Bulgur .......... one cup cooked ... 151 calories / 33.8 carbs / 8.2g fiber / 5.2g protein

By all means, switch to bulgur (and it cooks MUCH faster than brown rice!) You will save a whopping 67 calories per serving, you get more than TWICE the fiber, you get more PROTEIN, and you get about 60% of the carbs! How can you beat that!?

This Middle Eastern staple sounds more exotic than it is; bulgur is what's left after wheat kernels have been steamed, dried, and crushed. This cereal grain has been a food staple for years because it offers an inexpensive source of low-fat protein, making it a wonderfully nutritious addition to your low-calorie meal plan. High in fiber and protein, and low in fat and calories, bulgur is another food that offers bulk and nutrients to fill you up without adding pounds. One thing to keep in mind, a cup of bulgur has fewer calories, less fat, and more than twice the fiber of brown rice! Another health bonus, bulgur has more fiber than oats, buckwheat, or corn.

We buy organic bulgur in bulk at Whole Foods for 99 cents a pound. It's also sold at Trader Joes, some grocery stores, and most health food stores. You can also order it online from www.Amazon.com.

With BARLEY!  One cup cooked --- 193 cal/44g. carbs/6 g fiber/4 g protein.

Ok, you win with bulgur, I just thought I'd add barley to the mix because I read an article recently that touted barley as (in my words) the next oatmeal -- cleans out the cholesterol, etc.  Wink

#893 sarahrip Nov 30 2007 02:19
bulgur ??? what is that? What can you compare it too?I will look for it tomorrow. Thanks for the tip Cool
#894 shrinking_caro Nov 30 2007 11:53
Huh.  No wheat for me at the moment (or much, anyway!).  My tummy still winces at the thought of it after OD-ing so much on holiday.  I'm about to try pearl barley as a rice substitute though, so will keep you posted!  My sister raved about it the other day.  Stats are:

per uncooked Cup or 200g (a lot in other words!)

704kc, 31.2g fibre!, 2.3g fat

People, let's hear it for pearl barley :-D

(Edit, clarified the stats are for uncooked, lol!)

#899 danceswithforks Dec 01 2007 20:08
speaking of cat.....imagine moving 18 plus hours and you can't find the cat on 3 levels so you get food and as tired as all get out go around the house saying "TURKEY" here kitty kitty when you want to strangle him.....he was too interested in looking around his new environment for food.  shocking.

Lost keys you say.  Well, we got locked out of the house today but there were backups to be found....lucky us we got back in.
