| trh, dude, Your tale may not seem as dramatic as mine, but the story you tell is far more entertaining than my story by far. The only thing that you needed to do to make that story complete would have been to fall over. LOLROTF!! DAN | ||

Geez those are some scary bug stories. If I encountered a bee I would DEFINITELY crash my bike.
I am completely 100% unmotivated today. I did finish my ride but it took everything I had to do it. I called myself every single loser name in the book all the way, lol. I am thinking that tomorrow should be a bikeless day or at least an easy one. People are noticing the weightloss though and my coworkers have given up on the "wide load" sign for my bike. I keep telling them that if they don't behave I will dropkick them with my newly aquired big leg muscles, lol. So, there I am thinking that I am actually doing pretty good on the bike. I got a little wake-up call today when this other bike raced passed me and was out of sight before I even knew what the heck flew by me - and it was uphill too. I definitely have a long way to go before entering any rides or races, but I have all the time in the world. Jane |

Jane, Don't let other peoples abilities discourage you!! Look how far you have come already. There is always someone out there who will be, better, faster, stronger, you just need to focus on your goals and accomplishments. I'm a good rider but there is a 66 yr old who rides with us on occassion that I can't stay with no matter how much I might want too, he can go up a hill like I ride flat roads. I just tell myself I hope I can still ride a bike when I hit that age.
By all means take a day off, no matter what type excersise we do we all need to take a day off each week and rewind, it's one of the hardest lessons to learn. If you don't rest you burn out or overtrain and the fun ends. So go out and do something with the family or just sit and watch the world go by, you desevre it. DAN |

| Thanks Dan. Those were just the words I needed to hear. I pick watching the world go by. | ||

Not too shabby for a week with low expectations. I finished with 150 miles for the week. And I replaced the chain on my Aurora. I hope things have gone as well for everyone else. Carrie: I hope your day was as good as mine -- No rain as a matter of fact the sun was shining this afternoon. Joe |

Hi everyone! I would like to join as well. I have always loved biking but became more serious about it about a year ago. this summer I have tried to bike about 20 mi 2-3 times a week on my local towpath. It is a beautiful and shaded ride that I really enjoy. I have noticed a huge increse in my level of endurance since the past few years when I could barely make it 2 mi. On days that it is too hot or it rains I bike 10 mi on the stationary bike at my Y. Thats nice too because I can listin to my ipod or read and still keep up my speed and get a good workout. |

Jane, a few years ago, I was riding on what is for me a long ride -- 27 miles -- thinking I was making pretty good time, when I got passed by, I kid you not, a little old lady in a flowered dress and straw hat on, at most, a three-speed, if it had gears at all!! |

athena_tavener, that is too funny. Dan gets passed by a 66 year old and you get passed by an old lady in a flowery dress. Now I feel better, lol. At least this guy was all decked out in bicycle gear.
I have definitely noticed how very nice people are when they are on their bicycles (or jogging). Everybody waves and says "hi". What is really weird is that I have been on my bike a few times without my helmet (yes, I know - a big no-no) if I have to run to the store around the corner. When I do that, nobody waves or anything. It seems like I am not a serious rider if I don't wear my helmet. I am taking an "off" day today but I am going to ride my bike to work even though it is 90 degrees out there. Jane |

| Hi everybody! I've never been to this group before, but I just wanted to say Hi. I am a big fan of biking, whether it be on the road or on a state park trail. I used to ride 20-25 miles every day. My longest ride in one day was 81 miles. Unfortunately I now have some major health problems, where I can't ride at all. I am now trying to ride my stationary bike and have worked up to 5 minutes at a time, 3 times in a day, but not every day. I admire you all out there riding. It's geat fun, and a great exercise. Keep at it, and enjoy. I wish I could join you. | ||

Jane, I think those wheels look like the ticket for your son. BTW in N.C. it is a 50 fine for riding without a helmet, wish they'ed do that here, I see to many people without them. My wife had a crash 3yrs age that would have killed her is not for her helmet. Humor, sorry you had to give up something you love, Is your illness something that you can recover from? Thanks for the engouragement, I can't imagine not being able to ride, but we do what we must do, keep at your training and good luck! thebakerscat, welcome and keep in touch! Just got the results back from the race on July 4th, I took 4th WOOO HOOO!!! I'm so pumped! DAN |

Way to go Dan!!!!
We can get them to do the helmet law here in Ohio. I work with the politicians at the statehouse in Columbus all the time (autism related issues). It would simply be a matter of revising the part of the Ohio Code that addresses the bicycle rules about rights and responsibilities. Let me start hunting down a sponsor for a bill and do some research on it. Jane |

This is interesting. It appears that all the laws regarding helmets only cover children and teenagers. That makes no sense to me.; adults can get in accidents just as much as kids can.

| Leinad - I don't know if I'll recover or not. They haven't figured out what exactly is wrong with me. I have numerous doctors, have had tons of tests and lab work, and no one ca figure out what this mystery disease is. It's possible that the only way that they'll figure out what it is, is by taking a lung biopsy, which they weren't ready to do yet, and it's been 1 year and 3 months since I got at my worst and was put on oxygen 24/7. | ||

jane, The number of adults I see without helmets always makes me quiver, It is like they think "nothing will happen to me I'm just riding a bike". Let me know what you find out. humor, how odd, have they ruled out pulmanary fibrosis? Are you still on the oxygen? Hang in there and keep praying! DAN |
||
| #656 | Jul 08 2007 10:48 | |
| They haven't mentioned pulmonary fibrosis, and yes, I'm still on the oxygen. In fact, I've had to crank it up a bit the last few days. I thank God for giving me the strength to get through this, and trust that He is in control of the whole situation. | ||

our helmet law is only for minors too. i suppose they figure adults are old enough to be able to decide for themselves (to do something s stupid as riding without a helmet) whereas kids need to be protected no matter what their parents think.
no rides for me lately. work, eat, sleep, eat, work, eat, sleep, eat work,... for this past week and the foreseeable future. late nights and early morning meetings don't leave me time to bike commute. great result dan!! |

Our (bicycle) helmet law covers only minors, too, and still, I see many many minors without helmets on. Drives me crazy. When I do see a kid with a helmet on, I will often compliment him/her ("Cooool helmet! Wish mine came in [insert color here]"). Jane, pad the kid up, find a low grassy hill, and let 'im practice without training wheels, I say! :-D (I'm assuming in saying this that you are seeing the training wheels as an intermediary step, not something Christopher will always need.) leinad, I have a colleague who is an excellent biker and who also is alive because of his helmet. A driver swerved into his lane and hit him head-on. He hit the windshield with his face and head and was catapulted over the car. If it hadn't been for the helmet.... Congrats on the race finish!! w00t! ~~~ Hoping to get out to ride a short ride today. My DH and I went to the pool last night for the "adult pool party." We're both alcohol lightweights; a little (and I do mean little!) tequila, and I've got a bit of a headache, and he's awfully quiet upstairs. It's hot as the dickens here today, but not terribly humid; I find that even when it's in the 90s, so long as the humidity isn't bad, riding is okay. The wind in the face thing, you know. (Stopping is not good; THAT'S when the heat hits!) Questions, I've got questions.... A question for the more technically knowledgeable here. I got something out of our shed yesterday and found things had fallen over, knocking the bikes over, and oh, what a mess it was. I will probably use all wrong terminology describing this, but here goes: on my DH's bike, there is a plastic thingie (technical, I know) that is attached to the main gearwheel; it looks like it's there perhaps to keep dirt from hitting the chain, maybe? Anyway, it's bent, pulled away from the gear for about 1/3 of the way around the gear. The gear itself -- the one the pedals are attached to -- looks fine and turns fine. Is it safe to assume it's okay for him to ride, even though this thing is bent from the gear? And more questions: My son has outgrown his 17" Giant Sedona ST. I'd like to sell it so that he can buy a new bike with the proceeds (plus more cash, I'm sure). The bike is four years old, in good shape, and has a bike computer on it. How to sell?, and at what price?, are my questions. Thanks in advance for any and all assistance. |

| Oooooh, never mind on that first question! Hubby has been riding his bike with the bent thingie. I hadn't realized that; thought it had just happened. It didn't! Come to find out he'd had a little collision with a wall after hitting some mud on a turn. | ||

Thanks all for the pat on the back, feels good to still be able to hang with the front of the pack. You never know when time will finally slow you down, so it nice to do well, Thanks!!
humor, ask your doctors about the possiblity of pulmonary fibrosis and see what they say. carrie, life gets in the way of so many things doesn't it. well ride when you can, Hope things slow up for you a bit, athena, I love your technical description, I honestly had no idea whaqt you were talking about LOL. Glad you got it figured out. wish I knew an easy and effective way to sell a bike, but allas I do not. WOW, hit head on and lived, amazing and lucky as well! Did a ride today called the beautiful country ride, got in with a group of guys that where riding, Fast, would be an appropriate word. Turns out these guys are a proffesional mountain bike team that use this ride as a training ride. 100 miles of all out riding in very hilly terrain, we finished in 5 hours, it was fun but, OH AM I SORE!!!! hope everyone had a nice weekend and got in some riding (sorry carrie).
