Welcome to the new over 100 to lose club! obsidyan
  Jul 27 2006 18:12
Howdy guys and gals!  I'm taking over this club, not because i think i have all the answers (i so know i don't) but because i'm super pumped up right now and motivated to help those people out there who have a lot of weight to lose.  we need a place that's more than a "can i join" place.. we need a place to talk about issues related to being this overweight..

Who here needs to lose over 100 pounds? Who needs to lose over 150 pounds? Or more?

I did! I did! And yes.. i did!

A small amount of background on me for those of you who don't know: i am a binge eater. I have had a problem with emotional eating, hidden eating, over eating, eating with a hang nail, eating because i have split ends.. you name it i stuffed my emotions down with the greasiest, nastiest food i could find!

Why did i do that (you might ask)? Because of many many different reasons.. frankly i think it was because this is how i was taught from a young age, this is how we handle stress and emotions. I learned that it's not proper to talk about your feelings.. or god forbid, express your emotions! You have to shove them down with a piece of cake and a smile!

Anyway.. onto the reason for this post.

If you are out there and need to lose a lot of weight.. just like i've got to.. i think we need to have a place where we can discuss these issues with each other and try and work through them together. Because, let's face it, people who are morbidly obese (yes.. i hate that word too) have uniquely different issues to work through and deal with than the average person.

Losing weight, for people who have this much to lose, have to deal with so much more than the formulas to figure out how much to eat.. and exercising. It's more complex than that. We have to deal with years and years of poor eating habits that have to be unlearned, we have to deal with the emotional torment of just being this size, we have to deal with the harsh looks and comments from strangers or from loved ones, we have to deal with our emotions for the first time in our life because we aren't shoving them down our throats anymore..

this is the hardest thing ANYONE has to deal with.. but, from my experience, things are different for us bigguns. :)

also, for those of you who don't know me very well.. (because i've kinda been in hiding and not posting much and there are so many new people out there) i started out in january weighing 324 pounds. I now weigh 232.5.. i have lost 91.5 pounds so far. I am not telling you guys this to get kudos.. i got those yesterday. I'm telling you guys this because i want anyone out there who is struggling with knowing they have, what seems to be, an insurmountable amount of weight to lose, that there is hope.. it IS possible.. you CAN do it.. but it's hard.. and you will hurt.. i know this because i've been there.. i've done it.. and i'm still dealing with it.

so.. come on in and share your stories.. i want to hear them and i want us to support each other until we are all at our goal weight!

In addition to what catharina said... did you know that not all premium ice creams are created equal?!  No?!  Well, Perry's Ice Cream (which may be regional to northeastern US) runs about a third fewer calories than Ben & Jerry's or Edy's.  And that's comparing original recipe to original recipe!

I've also found significant caloric differences in tortilla wraps and other foods, so look at the labels and compare and contrast.  You could save a few hundred calories out of your diet and not change "what" you eat at all!

Catharina! LOL, its like listening to myself speak! My man is a big guy too, how do you ignore his eating habits?
#623 catharina Mar 06 2007 04:54
I suppose you learn to ignore that with time, just like the snoring  ;)

Just joined and seems like this is the place i need to be..I do my eating at night, after dinner..Whats up with that??Any ideas would be great..Need the kick in the tush..
#625 catharina Mar 06 2007 14:20
As long as you get your breakfast, lunch and dinner in and you make sure those are balanced meals.. I dont see any problems with after dinner eating. I'm the same way, ofcourse I start my day late and end my day late.

I never believed in the 'you get fat from eating late at night'. You'd get fat from it if you reached your allowance with dinner and go over your limit with a big bowl of icecream at 10. If you make smart choices and dont crash your allowance, I doubt it would magically make you gain two pounds.

You might start dreaming weird though :p I do believe that a full tummy can give you some crazy dreams!

I'm personally known to eat a bowl of oatmeal after work (at 10ish).

Hey guys. I haven't posted for awhile. I actually got off track the past few days. I am back in it today.  I have such a long way to go that I feel like it is impossible.

I need as much support as possible. Wish me luck this time everyone.

Hello, I am new here.  Browsing for a reference to count calories I found this site and joined. I have dealt with weight ever since I can remember, kids in kindergarden used to tease me. Anyway, I even had a gastric bypass, but, since am a muncher, that did not help. I am trying now to regain control, or better said, to finally be in control and not allow emotions to take over my eating habits hope to be on my way to success with the support of people who understand how it feels to go through life as an obese person.
#628 beanie1125 Mar 06 2007 16:17
Welcome dagoddess...

It's hard going it on your own.  I know before I started, I would THINK I would be eating healthy, and yes, I would choose individual foods that were healthy (and a bunch that weren't... hey, I'm being honest), but then I'd do the "oh, it's good for me!" and then promptly eat 4 or 5 servings worth.  Yeah, the life of a muncher is a hard one.

With c-c, I've become more aware of what I'm eating and also of portion sizes so HOW MUCH I'm eating.

I believe in everyone in this club (and on the site) and that they can achieve their goals.  I believe that you can get control over your eating.  :)  welcome

amen beanie (hi btw!  lol.  newbie here)

i had NO idea how many calories i was eating a day.  after just tracking everything, i figured out i was eating anywhere from 3000-4000 calories A DAY.  fudge.   for now, i'm trying to keep it down to 2500 but i need to work down to 1500 calories.  i 've also started (in jan)excercising every other day.  according to this site tho, i have 129 lbs to lose.  (i'm at 269 after losing 6lbs).  at this point, i would be happy to be under 200.
#630 beanie1125 Mar 07 2007 13:57
It is a very happy celebration to change starting numbers.  Throw a party when you do.  Virtual parties are fun.  You can eat virtual cake (0 calories) and have virtual punch and throw virtual confetti around.  And virtual clean up is a SNAP!  :)

Thanks - I really needed that.  I am really struggling today to "be good".  I am 41 years old and have always been fat, although, sometimes, just heavy.  I joined WW in Nov. of 2006 at an all time high of 262.  I currently weight  239.  I am please with the results, but it has been so slow.  Guess that's due to being on the other side of 40.  I read your posting and feel rejuvenated.  Staying motivated is the hardest part.  Seems like we sacrafice and suffer only to lose a pound a week?  I have to remember that those pounds per week add up, and it will be worth it.
#632 itsmytime Mar 09 2007 11:51
ruffbeachday--i will be 40 in July..which is one reason I really started gearing up to lose this weight.  I started gaining in my 20's and fussed and whined about it in my 30's ...so I DESERVE to live it in my 40's!!!!!!!  :)
#633 catharina Mar 09 2007 14:56
Ruffbeachday, be happy it goes slowly. That way it will be oh so much easier to KEEP it off. I'm young, when I was even younger, I would have my little diet stints.. lose 10, gain 20. If I actually had to work hard on losing even 1 pound, I know I probably wouldn't have let it come back on.

It's like money, if you gotta work hard to earn it, you appreciate it more. ;)

Welcome to all the newbies, I too was in the club of 'I -think- I'm eating healthy..' Of course, I did lose weight, but a life of diet orange soda and crackers can't be good for you :p

I was thinking last night, according to this site, if I lose about 1.5 lbs a week I should be under 250 by my birthday in August o_o I kind of expect to be lower, honestly, I dont think I only lose 1.5, in the first weeks of a diet I usually lose like 3-4 lbs a week :p Guess that means normally I eat WAY TOO MUCH. Eh. I knew that.
#634 beanie1125 Mar 09 2007 16:56
Hey Ruffbeachday... Sometimes it does take hearing other people's successes to motivate yourself.  After all, if others have done it, you can too.  When I started and calculated I needed to lose 100lbs, it was daunting.  I told myself, my brother successfully lost 80 or so lbs, so I could do it too (anything boys can do, girls can do better, I can do anything better than you!).  Here, I've lost 70lbs, and I'm damn proud of it.  I know the next 30 will be tough, but I've come so far, it's no time to turn back.

Keep a journal of what's going right and what's going wrong, what's working and what's not.  You too can look back and see how happy you were at reaching a mini goal, or find the first time that you were able to turn down or eat only a small piece of your favorite 'bad' food.  It'll remind you of how far you've come when you're feeling down.

And keep positive.  Sometimes it's really hard, but keeping a positive "I can and WILL do this" attitude will help in the long run.  If you feel like giving up, remind yourself "I can do this.  I will do this."  Say it out loud!  It's funny, but saying your goals out loud really helps.  :)

Finally, a home!  Whoo hoo!  I joined calorie counters yesterday and found you guys today.  I too just reached that magic "40".  I think I currently weigh about 224?  I don't really do scales, I used the one at the gym (which I know is off kilter).  I am a size 16/18..which is not where I want to be.  I need to be about 124 to 135..so that puts me directly here in this group.  I've just read all the messages and you guys seem quite supportive and a bit wacky...just down my alley.

My biggest problem is actually eating. Yes, I know...is that really a problem?  Oh yes, because everything I do eat goes straight to fat!  It's killing me to eat the calories they suggested to me, but I'm trying.  I swear I feel like I'm eating constantly!

I do go to the gym regularly (for three weeks now).  Not much has happened except my stamina and energy levels have improved greatly.  Eventually, the pants size will go down, it will have no choice in the matter! LOL.

Anyway I'm so happy I have found ya'll, suppport is fabulous and let's face it, unless someone is in our boat they really don't get it.  Cheers!

#636 itsmytime Mar 13 2007 09:55
welcome jaxlynn!  yes, you have found the right group!  look for anything 100+ pounds to lose...lots of inspiration in here!  I look forward to each morning when I get online to get updates and to update!

keep us posted!  great job on the working out!  speaking of that...time to go get on the treadmill......
#637 ruffbeachday Mar 13 2007 10:20
Thanks for the encouraging words.  I know that to lose weight takes a lot of work - healthy eating, exercise, determination and morivation.  Even though I know these things, sometimes it really helps to hear others cheer you on.  Losing weight is a lot of mind over matter.
#638 ruffbeachday Mar 13 2007 13:29
Are there any appetite suppressants out there that work?
#639 catharina Mar 14 2007 14:22
If you eat healthy and regularly, you shouldn't need it, Ruff. But maybe others have used some of the 'wonderpills' with success.

Anyhow, just dropping by to do some chair dancing with you all. The horribly inacurate grocery scale at the supermarket has told me I lost about 10 lbs in the past 4 weeks. WOAH! Might have been more since I weighed after lunch. But hey, a general indication that I'm going in the right direction is great. I've ordered an actual honest to god scale, but for now, this'll have to do.
#640 beanie1125 Mar 14 2007 14:43
Hi jaxlynn!  Yep, that's us, supportive and a bit wacky.  I think that like most "big" people, we develop wacky senses of humor because it's safer and "okay" to be the "funny fat kid," but I digress...

It really is amazing how much food you can eat and still be only 1500 calories!  Yes, it does feel like you're always eating.  Personally, I love that part of it.  I never feel "deprived" or that I'm "denying."

If it's true that what you're eating goes straight to fat and you're eating more calories than you were, you might have been on the edge of starvation.  Funny how it can happen, being overweight and starving at the same time!  Your metabolism will straighten out over time, and keep it up at the gym too, and your pants sizes will fall.

I was 250 when I started and a very tight 16W.  I'm now 177 (this morning) and last weekend bought a size 12 out of the "regular" sizes in the store.  It CAN be done!  I've lost 73 of the 100lbs I want to lose, and if I can do it, you can too!  :)

Ruffbeachday: you don't need appetite suppresants, those and other diet pills mess you up inside.  When you go off of them, your body hasn't really 'learned' anything.  I know it's hard to do it the 'old fashioned way,' but in the long run it's the 'old fashioned way' that works!
