We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

Morning everyone! I had a fabulous 10 mile run on Saturday, although it was a little cold for my liking (in the lower 40s). Otherwise I spent a lot of time eating very bad food, heh.

Primadonna, I concur with what others have said regarding sidewalk-passing etiquette. In general pedestrians are clueless, rude and selfish regarding sidewalk space, and often any kind of "On your left" yell won't cause them to realize that they actually have to share the sidewalk. As you can tell, I'm kind of bitter about this because I go out of my way to allow others to pass me, and yet I am constantly balked by pedestrians who take up the whole sidewalk as though they own it. If they don't hear my repeated "Passing on your left" yells, then I slow down and ask them politely to move over. I figure if they hear it in a polite way they are more likely to pay attention the next time they are passed by a runner.

I have friends whom I run with, though, who will actually shoulder-check pedestrians who don't get out of the way. Also, during races, I think it's common sense for slower runners to get to the right so faster runners can pass on the left, and if they don't do that then I am less polite. Runners should know. And I've gotten some really terrible times on races because I was stuck behind multiple slow people running in a line across the road. Grr!

3.1 miles of hill drills yesterday, with legs like lead.  Bleah.

And while we're on the subject of etiquette, does anyone have issues with cars that don't slow down or move over, even when there's no one coming the other way?  I've come close to being run over more than once and had to jump out of the way of oncoming traffic several times.  In Quebec, we legally have 3 feet from the side of the road to either walk or bike, but some car drivers seem either clueless or they just hate runners (?). 

It's enough to drive you batty...

Thank you everyone! I feel much better now. I do try to be polite, especially with shoppers and the elderly, and I say thank you when I see people move well before I even have to say anything. I feel like runners sometimes get a bad rap for being "rude," but all the runners I see out and about give nods, waves, or hellos. I think pedestrians don't understand that we don't always have great breath control and we need to be loud. Anyway, I shall remain positive in that perhaps the gentleman was acknowledging me, but should it happen again, I may be inclined to yell out, "No, dummy, I'm ON YOUR LEFT. Now MOVE!" Hee hee. Jenka, I completely agree with you during races. I'm not a fast runner so I try to stay to one side of the road or the other. It definitely gets tough with large groups (runners or walkers).

And yes, skinny_kitty, I have so many issues with drivers in my area, too. I was honest to God once almost hit by a driver making a right on red who was on his cell phone and only looking in the other direction. I gave a very satisfying smash to the hood of his car as I entered into the road to avoid his bumper. And by smash, I really just mean I slapped it... I may have been wearing gloves. But in my head, it was absolutely a smash.

Only 28.44 miles for me this week.  I missed a day.  ...but will be much more diligent next week.

Yes, I agree that runners often get stereotyped as rude, and it's only exacerbated when one or two of them act in a rude manner. I try not to, and I also thank pedestrians who make room for me. And I try to avoid those situations as often as possible by cutting into the road and passing them that way so as not to disturb them. However, it's irritating because I have just as much right to be on the sidewalk as they do.

Skinny_kitty, I've haven't really had any close calls with cars, but I live near the center of a car-tastic city so I tend to be very careful about running in the road. If I have to stop to let a car pass me, I do.

On Monday evenings I run with a group made up of neighbors. Last night I noticed it's much easier to run in a group, as far as sidewalks and cars are concerned! People get out of our way much faster. Hee!

jenka:  Ah, running in the city.  I think it'd be a real challenge to plan your route and avoid busy areas -- just what do you do about traffic lights?

I'm in the boonies, where cars SHOULD just move over a bit and maybe slow dowwwwnnn...?  I mean, how much time would you lose slowing down for 5 seconds while you pass someone on foot?  Especially when there's gigantic puddles and / or ice everywhere?   In a perfect world, we'd all be running hassle free and chocolate would be a prominent part of the food pyramid :)
Please add another 6.25 miles for me from today. In spite of this weird cold/cough thing (feels like I've swallowed a cactus, and there's a random phelgm ball that I can't seem to cough up, or get to settle in my chest.....so I spend most of the day clearing my throat. UGH), the run felt pretty good.

Not sure that I'll be able to do the 1/2 marathon on Saturday though. My throat is really dry and sore - and breathing during today's run was a little torturous (actually - it was the couple of minutes afterwards when I was drinking water).

I'm playing it by ear.....but I don't want to make things worse by running 13.1 miles when my body should be using the energy to fight the bug.
Please add 7.0 miles for me today.

I ran 24 miles for the week of the 20th - 26th.

fitnessfreak, be careful with the cough/throat/breathing thing and make the decision to run the 1/2 mary as it gets closer. Take care of you!

Fitnessfreak, I agree that you should make the decision closer to the time of the race. You should be in lighter mode anyway during the rest of the week to prepare for the race, so you may feel better by that time. You will be surprised how fast your very strong body will bounce back. Make sure to get lots of vitamin C!

Skinny_kitty, oh yeah, running in the city is a challenge to plan. There is only one road, running north-south, that I have to worry about re: traffic lights because it's so busy. I live near it so I hit it during the first half mile and last half mile. Otherwise, I manage to hit intersections such that I'm turning right, or stay on somewhat lesser traveled roads. Thank goodness for Google pedometer!
