Locker Room Etiquette - the clothed, the ones that hide and the ones that let it all hang out!

Quote  |  Reply

As I'm 4 weeks into my workout program and 7 pounds lighter, I've been spending 5-6 mornings a week at my local gym.  The last time I really did the whole gym thing was in college, and we had very private areas to get dressed and showered in.  At my current gym though, it's basically one large locker room area, the shower areas, bathrooms, and then the mirrors/hairdryers/hairspray areas.

I'm one of those that has a life outside the gym, and since I've done 45 minutes of weights and 30 minutes of cardio, I really need to do a quick shower and get out of the place!  What I've noticed is that there are women, usually in the 40-55 demographic that literally spend upwards of 2 hours in the locker rooms.... and 9 times out of ten they are there for those 2 hours completely nude.

I'm not a prude.  I don't hide in the stalls to undress or anything.  I simply shower, grab my towel, head to my locker drop my towel for maybe 20 seconds!!, get dressed in a tank and jeans, head to the hairdryers in this outfit, get makeup on, go back to my locker put on my blouse and leave!

Why do women think it's perfectly ok to be hanging out all nude (it's fine for them, but personally I don't think 99 percent of the ladies want to see them!) why putting on lotion and makeup in the common areas?  Would it be too much inconvenience to put on bras/undies or a towel?  Why do people put their feet up on the counters and shave their toes?  Lotion up like its a sex scene from a movie?

Anyway, I'm not ashamed of nudity, but I personally don't want to see it in a locker room's makeup area.  I'm perfectly fine if someone is naked for a moment while they get dressed, but I think it's bizarre when it's so excessive and ladies are watching tv in the lounge nude and in the room for hours (they're there when I check-in and still naked 1hr+ later when I'm in the shower!).

I once saw one of these naked ladies outside the gym when I was at the Mall, and I told my friend it was the Naked Lady and she agreed, and said her gym was the same way.  I know people here will say it's all my problem and I need to get over it, but it's a pet peeve of mine.

When did reverting back to a 12 year old's, pre-pubescent pubic region become de rigueur for all women?  Not that I necessarily appreciate hair flying from a swimsuit, but crikey, ladies -- brazilians aren't for all women (I dare say, they are not for MOST women).  Hell, a straight wax or shave is not for many women.

I've never met anyone who claimed to have gotten pubic lice (crabs) from a locker room (which would be a better excuse than explaining they came from a 1-nighter or dirty hotel).  Wait -- I've never met anyone who has had crabs (that they were talking about).

I agree that if you sit on the bench (or lounge chair) you should have a towel under you -- that is common courtesy.  But, if these are the same women who already take up space in the make up area with feet on the counters whilst naked -- they aren't likely to be concerned with how we (I) feel, anyway.

Other than that -- it is a locker room, I expect to be surrounded by people in some form of undress.  But I don't hang around much anyway.

oops -- guess I should have said "9 year old"

I'm pretty sure this is similar to what happened in NY a couple years ago....

So wait... there are actually women here who believe it is perfectly normal to go through the agony of waxing pubic hair every few weeks and then the period of it growing back out of (or even worse under) the skin all of which is very painful and uncomfortable not to mention dangerous as it creates multiple wounds in the most sensitive part of the body? You can't be serious? O_o

To the people defending the nudies: Yes, you have a right to be naked and comfortable and take your time in the locker room.

HOWEVER: The rest of us have a right to be comfortable in there too!

If I walk into a locker room, I do indeed expect to see some nudity. But if I make a personal and moral choice to be fairly modest, why is that choice not to be respected too? I don't walk around forcing my conservativeness on you. I don't hand out towels and insist you use it. (Btw, I'm not "prudish"either. I don't hide or go to extremes to remain covered)

So why would it be OK for you to invade my personal space with your private areas (please notice the term PRIVATE). I should be able to complete my hyegiene routine comfortably TOO. JUST LIKE YOU SHOULD. To me, a prude is someone who is offended by nudity or related subjects. I'm not offended by your skin... I AM offended when you bring your skin into my personal space and I can't avoid it.

And it can be argued that most people are not carrying diseases/parasites that we need to worry about. But firstly, how do we know which of you are infected and which are not.  And secondly, even if you are healthy, i do not care to come into any kind of contact with your "clean" fluids either.

end rant

well

naked people + ungroomed + bench (could)

 = PUBIC LICE

Please tell me you're either kidding or I'm misinterpreting your use of the word "groomed"?  Because I'm understanding you to say that if a woman doesn't wax off all her pubic hair, you think she has lice?!?!  That's as ridiculous as me thinking that because you have hair on your head, you must have lice!  (And, yes, that's meant to sound ridiculous and I don't think that.)  Different cultures have different practices when it comes to body hair; it doesn't mean they're unclean.

I meant it as a joke....but I'm pretty sure people who shave down there don't get crabs. Well at least there have been a lot less cases since shaving is now the norm.

that would be awkward, I had a teacher in middle school (PE) who would get completely naked and take a shower while everyone else showered in a swimsuit. And she would try and have conversations with a bunch of 12-13 year old girls and SHE didn't shave and I still remember that today!!!!

Wrong.

How did this women not get sued or fired for indecent exposure! Isnt this inappropriate behaviour in a school setting???

LOL you want to sue somebody for taking a shower naked?

Is it?  Really?  Id've guessed less cases of pubic anything are because of generally improved hygiene (ah the wonders of soap, eh?).  I wouldn't have thought shaving is the norm...

First of all a disclaimer here, I have NOT read everyone else's thoughts and am only answering to the poster - usually I add my 2 cents only to discover later a war broke out and my comment doesn't even fit the conversation anymore ;)

I found that very strange when I first started also. In fact, I have posted a horror story that haunts me to this day about a woman naked bent over at the waist to get something out of her locker - her image bounced off the mirror behind her right into my unsuspecting eyeballs as I entered the locker room - I still have not quite recovered!!  :)  I too undress - wrap a towel around me and go the the shower - then I put the towel back on and walk to my locker and cover my bottom area then whip the towel off and get the rest of the way dressed.  But, it no longer really bothers me that other's choose to walk around naked anymore.  What I really don't like is when they go into the hot tub or steam room and sit on the side etc - to me that is just GROSS!

You will start to get used to it though - actually they should be applauded in the sense that they are not ashamed of their bodies and it's a non issue to them.  They are far from perfect as pretty much 100% of us are - so I kind of envy them their acceptance of their selves as they are!!
