For those in college, or those quickly approaching it, beware!!! The Freshman Fifteen - the bane of college calorie counters everywhere - is ready to take a new group of victims on campuses nationwide this fall!
For those who have felt the pain of the 15lbs of cafeteria food, hanging out in the dorm, not having your highschool extracurriculars, and just being too darned lazy to get out and about, join me in losing that weight! :) As an upcoming junior in college, i'm still waging war against the last 10lbs - who's with me?!?
*EDIT*
August 4th, 2008
To anyone just seeing this topic, please know that you're still welcome to join us! There are voluntary weigh-ins each Wednesday if you're interested. Whether you're headed to college, in it, or leaving it we're happy to have you! :D
Yeah, I also weigh myself first thing in the morning, so here it is...
156.6 lbs, down from 157.8 a week ago. 1.2 pounds in a week? I guess I'll take it :).
Goal for next week: 155.5. I can't expect too much when I'm not exercising... thankfully I go home on Saturday! :)
Edit: I just took a shower and weighed myself again just for fun...156.2. Okay body...whatever you say lol. Or maybe my scale is wacky, who knows.
Good job everyone!
I weighed in at 133 today =) It's exactly what I expected and I'm very happy! Just 3 pounds away from my next reward, and the anticipation is huuuuuge haha... Down 2 pounds from last Monday.
So I'm pretty sure I met all my goals for last week and surpassed the walking goals. I've turned into quite the walker now that I've discovered a beautiful trail right next to my house =) So for this week, here's my plan:
Friday, Monday, and Wednesday are all strength-training days. 45 minutes of grunting and sweating. It should be my last week on these weights, and then increase max weight by 5-10% for each exercise (except biceps because those puppies are struggling!)
Saturday is boxing day, so 50 minutes of cardio boxing and probably 1-2 hours of walking in the morning.
Sunday is a 2-hour jog/sprint. I'm thinking 10 second hard sprints+50 second easy jogs.
Tuesday is an hour bike ride.
Yaay good job everyone :)!
Jecca, you are way more hardcore than me, haha. I can't wait to get home and start exercising, though.
Baaah I have to go study...do not want...
Carrie I think we're both addicted to this site! Haha I just sit in my office all day and try to keep busy, hence the calorie counting. I'm beginning to think I'm counting the calories just to pass the time!
It does sound hardcore, but see, that's because I don't have a social life! It's either sit at home and watch tv, or go out and exercise! I have social events like... once every two weeks... being home is so much less exciting than being at school. BUT, it does mean waaaay less peer pressure to drink/eat anything and everything in sight!

Haha, that's what I do at work a lot of the time :P When I've nothing to do, I just hop on here and surf around. Today was busy, so I wasn't on as much, but usually there's not much to do! hehe.
(And as I type that, my boss walks up behind me...)
Sorry I missed the weigh in this morning!
I was at 114.2
My goal for the next week:
113.0
I want to lose 1.2 lbs
Wish me luck!
I am a college sophomore this fall and I actually ended up losing weight (I had a baby) but I am still with you because I have 10-20lbs to go until I'm happy. My college (UNC Charlotte) offers free gym but that's hard to go for so I'm trying to do pilates and when it isn't hot, outdoors jogging. Food is sooo hard to get though! Everything around is so unhealthy I'm surprised that not everyone weighs 200lbs! Good luck losing!
Good job guys with the lack of gaining in freshman year. Most of us were saying things along the same line... sophomore year seemed to be the real killer. The novelty of a new city has passed and instead the PARTAYS become intense haha. More people can buy booze. Matty said it right, sophomore slump!
I have to say that having a fridge in my room is one of the BEST things to keep me at my happy weight.. then you don't feel like you need to eat everything in sight at meal hall! On the weekends, there are only 2 meals served at the meal hall (at my uni). Anyways, the first one is from 11-1, and the second from like 430-630. I understand that it helps with costs and whatnot, but it doesn't support healthy eating! It leads to HUGE meals on the weekend, especially greasy meals because of the previous day's drinking. Blech. So having a fridge with hummus, veggies, yogurt, apple sauce, water, and salsa really helped me out a lot. Snacks are the way to go, particularly if you have a buffet-style meal hall.
Is anyone else pumped about how everyone lost weight? Haha I'm not looking forward to when one (or all) of us reaches a stall.. but that's where the support comes in :)
I'm just finishing my freshman year, so I really hope I don't gain next year! I feel like I learned a lot this year though about how to eat healthy at school and how to keep from gaining weight. I just have to watch the alcohol and the SNACKING! It's so hard, especially winter quarter, because studying is so depressing and all I want to do is eat! I found a good solution to that though is to go to the library or even just down to the study lounge in my building because it takes me away from my food.
Today hasn't been a great day so far...everyone's leaving (except me, I still have a final tomorrow), so we went out to lunch at Noodles & Company, which wasn't too bad except then on the way back my friend got a caramel frap and she didn't want it so she gave it to me, and of course I finished it! Oh well, when I get home the closest Starbucks is like a ten minute drive.
*sigh* Time to study...
I had such a good day today! I was active all day! I went to the gym and did 35 minutes of cardio with 15 minutes of GOOD strength training (rare for me). Then I helped my friends plant a big garden at my high school for 3 hours. Then I went to the beach and took a big long walk and went in the ocean. I'd say overall I burned 1000 extra calories! It makes me feel so good after I've been kind of bad lately. Summer just started and I seem to be going out for ice cream all the time. I'm just hoping to get my body bikini ready and I want to be thin by the time I go to college so all I'll have to do is worry about maintaining. I'm getting happier and happier with my body every day though :) Good job everyone for losing weight!
This group is so true. The freshman 15 is horrible. I gained 15 pounds my freshman year and I commute which made me think that I would still be eating some good food....that didnt happen because I was on campus for 12-13 hours every day so i ate the same food everyone else did. I was also way too lazy to go the gym even though I wasnt that active before college. Once I got to college working out just seemed like a big pain in the but and I was not going to do it....I so regret that. So for those who will be freshman this coming fall...have fun be safe but watch what you eat...you will be surprised at what the food your caf. contains. The cafeteria was kind of based on healthy foods but it was still very bad for you and I ate quite a bit of it. Also I have a feeling that most freshman will be drinking and such...try to stay away from that as it will be SO BAD for your calories especially if you drink heavily...plus ur underage which sucks but deal with it. I do. Anyway just be safe and watch out for those tempting foods....you dont want to have to lose another 15 pounds. I was overweight before I went to college and now I have a MUCH LONGER road ahead of me.
Hey guys!!
Aww I feel so out of the loop. As far as the weigh-in goes, didn't lose an ounce! Well actually I'm not sure; my scale is ridiculous (says I weigh one thing, then an hour later 10 lbs more, then an hour later 5lbs less... It's just broken).
Then again, I've been sittin' around all week, BORED OUT OF MY MIND. This ankle injury is really puttin' a cramp in my style. Hopefully I'll be well enough by tomorrow or Sunday to make it to my yoga class. Cross yer fingers!
I also haven't been listing on here what I've been eating (haven't been online much), but I am definitely watching everything I put in my mouth. I'm gonna get back into the swing of things TODAY though! Totally ready (again) and pumped!!
Plus it helps that the boy is gonna be in town on August 2nd, so I need to jumpstart!
On that note... Anyone have any good tips for booty-shaping exercises? It's the first place I lose weight from (which makes me sad) so I want to rock it out into shape, jLo style!
I will totally join you! I'm in that stretch against that last 10 lbs too (end of sophomore year, but i totally **** up due to alcohol in copious amounts and the fact that people in my house like to make cookies and curly fries at 2am).
Welcome, Stephy :)
Brenda - I know one good exercise "Butt Ups".
You start in a sit-up position, laying on the floor with your knees bent, and instead of lifting your chest up, you lift your butt up off of the ground until you make a triangle between your calves, the floor, and your upper back. You're going for straight diagonal line. Hold it for a few seconds and repeat. A set of about 25 will have you feeling it ;) You can do them with your feet planted about a foot apart, or right together - each will work different muscles. Hope that helps :D
I hear that excersize (butt ups) are really good for your obliques too which will lead to a slimmer looking tummy. They're really tough for me so I try to do them once in a while because obviously my muscles in that area are lacking. If you get confident in them though you might want to try lifting on leg straight into the air and pumping your butt and back (brining it up and down without touching the floor). Then you'll REALLY start to feel it.
awesome! i'm going to try those out during each workout sesh this week + will report the results!
my sweet beach cruiser is finally fixed! if this AWESOME weather holds up, i'm gonna take it for a ride to the library on monday (i'm addicted to reading).
motivation from strange places: my 5 year old godson, cute as a button, constantly yells at my mom for smoking. he says to her, "those are bad for you. youre going to die, i dont want you to die," then he HIDES them! its actually quite hilarious! ANYHOW, he walked in during one of my workout seshs, and he got on the floor and started working out with me! he was like, "come on, i know we can do this, whew its hot, lets get some water, okay i'm on number 7, what about you?" (pushups!)
my swim class starts on the 23rd, i cant wait! hot arms here i come.
Brenda - Lol! What a sweet kid! that sounds adorable, haha!
Laf - I'm definitely going to try that leg-thing. :) Sounds like it might help!
Guess whaaaaaaaaat... I woke up this morning (TTOM finally ended) and I was back to my regular self... putting me at 129.5lbs :D That was pretty awesome to see. I'm officially the lightest that I have been since before I started highschool. My goal: be maintaining at 120-125 and toned by August 15th. I am planning on stopping at 125 and upping the cals to 1500, but keeping up with the workouts. If the workouts keep the weight loss going, I'll let them, but not to any lower than 120.
Hooray! :D Hope you're all having wonderful weekends! :) Don't forget that Father's Day is tomorrow!
Heather - that's awesome!! Under 130, wow! :)
Hey Stephy! And Brenda, your godson sounds adorable! :)
Ugh. Well the last couple of days have been pretty bad for me food-wise because I was moving out, and then today I was on the road all day which meant eating out for lunch and then eating a crappy/late dinner...but all will be back to normal tomorrow :). And tomorrow I'm going to start exercising, although I haven't decided exactly what I'm going to do yet lol...I think Sundays are going to be like actual exercise days (not cardio) buuuut I haven't worked out the details.
Now it's time for sleeeep so that I can make it to church tomorrow...
Carrie - lol, you're probably getting a lot of exercise moving out! That's a lot of work, so its probably ok that your eating schedule is a bit askew ;) And 1 off day doesn't hurt too much! :) When I first started exercising, I just did like 15 minutes on the elliptical and a little bit of weight lifting. After 2 or 3 of those workouts (I was pushing myself, even though that's a pretty short workout), I was able to do a lot more!
So, I've a bit of a concern... I'm coming out of TTOM, during which, its really hard for me to eat all of my calories, but I've really been trying hard to make myself get over 1000 (I know, I need at least 1200). Anyway, over the last 6 days, my calorie average has been 1,087. And in the last 6 days, it tells me I've lost 4.5lbs. (Today I was 128.0) I haven't exercised but 2x this week, though I'll try to get a workout in tonight after all of the father's day celebrations.
Do you think having gone from no exercise to exercising within the last two weeks combined with reduced intake from TTOM could have caused this? I know that I've gained some muscle, so maybe that has sped up my metabolism? I'm afraid its going to shoot way back up... any thoughts?
