I'd like to start this thread specifically for women who are 50 or over.
As a 53 year-old woman, myself, I am finding new challenges, unexpected difficulties and wonderful insights on my path to getting to and maintaining my health, weight and body shape.
What seemed to work for me as little as five years ago doesn't work quite the same anymore. My body doesn't seem to respond to what I consider healthy eating habits and good workout schedules as it even in my middle to late 40s'.
SO, I am would to hear from those out there who are finding themselves in situations. OR NOT, maybe you can enlighten the rest of us as to how you keep your shape, or how you're getting into better shape and a healthier overall lifestyle.
Hopefully this will be the start of something wonderful, educational, funny-offer up jokes anecdotes, whatever!
LET'S GET STARTED!
Reason: Moved from Health & Support to Motivation forum
Hi. Just a quick catch-up before bed. I started my new job with the first cold I've had in years. Didn't want to take sick days my first week, so I muddled through but it was not fun. The job went okay. I had to get some codeine cough syrup from the doctor because I started coughing non-stop. My exercise was practically nothing. It has been 109-110 degrees in my area with terrible air quality from the fires.
On the plus side, I didn't eat much because I couldn't taste it anyway. The new office doesn't have snacks lying around like the old one did. I'm finally feeling on the mend tonight, but still more tired than normal.
I saw James Taylor when he came to Bakersfield last fall. He was awesome! His voice is as good as ever.
Robbie, glad your husband's surgery was successful. I hope you kick your virus. I didn't have a sore throat with mine. Beth, you are looking great!! Bonton, your landscaping is lovely. I am jealous! Snowfence, you are doing so well - keep walking!! Dess, congrats on the lower scale numbers!
Everyone else, hang in there. I've gotta go but I'll chat more later.
Alice
thanks guys! lol i gotta walk! that's how i got my weight down to begin with. well, that and eating less & eating better.
anyway, i walked almost 8 miles yesterday. all i got was 139.0. it'll probably go down in a few minutes though. i'll take 138.8 even! :D
i gotta get down to my 134 i've been dreaming about...
robbie, i'm glad that surgery went well & you're getting better too.
Robbie LOL about the marriage thing - I definitely got it backwards! Had money the first time around- now I have true love and great sex ... oh too much information!
LOL Really glad your husband's surgery went well and I'm gald you are feeling better! Better quit braggin about your height - you might start shrinking!!!! LOL
I better not shrink - I don't have enough height to lose any - my daughters and I are always saying we don't need to lose any weight just grow 3 inches!
ohio I've been a little lax about logging because I'm not on here as much as when I'm working. Maybe I'll try what you do and enter everything in the morning then adjust it at the end of the day.
Alice - Sorry to hear that you are under the weather too. Must be some virus going around. I hope that you soon start feeling better. Thanks for the compliments on the landscaping - it did really turn out quite nice!
snow -Congrats on the new low WOOOHOOO Since the 4th of July I went up a pound and can't get rid of it! Even with all my gardening and golfing![]()
I won my match yesterday - up 4 holes with 3 to go. I didn't think I could beat her with all those strokes I had to give her but I did! Next I play one of my friends! LOL she has a 30 handicap so I have to give her 9 strokes LOL Golfing today with 3 of my friends - my hubby got in a tournament with the men - my one friend and I usually get in them too but it's a 2 day tournie and if you win on Sunday am you had to play another 18 ...36 holes is just too much! I played 27 yesterday - match in the afternoon and our couples league (9 holes) in the evening - I was exhausted! LOL Maybe all this golf will get rid of this pound that I found over the 4th of July! I really need more protein ... I keep saying i'll do better LOL
Good morning ladies!
I've lost another 2.2 lbs since last Saturday. Yeah! I pushed my walk a little further this morning but was REALLY tired when I got home. No water aerobics today, so maybe the extra walking will make up for it.
Snow - You are doing just great! Keep it up. You encourage me.
Alice - It's nice to hear from you again. Sorry to hear you got a cold but it's nice to hear you got a new job and that it went okay.
Bonton - Congrats on winning your match! It sure sounds like you have a lot of fun playing golf. I think that is great!
Ohio - That's a good idea about logging ahead of time. I've done that a few times but mostly I log as I go. I do have to plan my meals ahead of time though or it gets me in trouble.
Robbie - Praying for your husband. How did the surgery go?
Robbie and Joanna - the similarities between you two is neat.
One time my husband and I were attending a large Bible class in a big church and the teacher asked everyone to turn around and meet the person behind them. My husband and I turned around and shook hands with the couple directly behind us.
My husband said, "Hi, my name is Larry and this is my wife Beth." and the man replied, "Well hi, my name is Larry and this is my wife Beth!" At first we thought he was kidding but he wasn't. It turned out they lived only two blocks from us and we ended up becoming really close friends.
Well, my son came by yesterday to show us he bought a motorcycle. Now I have even more reason to pray for him! I'm not so worried about him because he is a responsible and sensible 32 year old. But I am worried about some of the crazy drivers on the road who might run into him. He bought it to save gas and I can certainly understand that but still, I think this might give me more gray hair. I am thankful that he also bought a really good helmet and a jacket that is designed to protect him. I'm also thankful that he is the father of 5 children. So he has plenty of motivation to drive safely. He reminded me of that, too.
Ya'll have a great weekend,
Beth
Made it through the worst of my various symptoms, and even tried a little (1/2 hour) Stairclimber work. I don't know how brilliant that was, but it's been over a week and I just had to get some stress out. So, at least for the moment, I feel better; I guess I'll find out tomorrow how helpful it was. Tom's upstairs asleep--he's frustrated with how many things it takes two hands to do--something we usually give no thought, right?
Alice: I know what you mean about the fatigue; energy seems to be the first casualty of a compromised immune system. But, you survived, and I bet you didn't fall too far back if you weren't eating much. Will new job cut into your climbing?
Snow: What kind of scale do you use? Mine doesn't measure ounces, only to the 1/2 pound. Eight miles! Remarkable.
Bonton: I think there must be a link between your losing weight and lower golf scores? You just keep on winning! I take it you walk the course, not ride?
Beth: You're really progressing with the walking, and isn't it great to have results show up? I feel exactly the way you do about Tom and his mtorcycle, but at least your son (who sounds very responsible, especially for a male under 40!) wears a helmet. I can't seem to convince Tom to do that, and our state legislature hasn't made them mandatory. FIVE kids at 32? Wow, he sure has his work cut out for him. Do other Larry and Beth have the same number of kids you do?
Gotta go catch up on chores I didn't do while I was sick! Enjoy the weekend, all.
robbie I do walk whenever I play golf with the ladies and when it's not too hot ( today I rode it was 88 and humid) but when I play with my hubby I ride with him - he has bad knees so he can't walk , however I jump off a lot and walk to my ball or the next shot! All that walking does help keep the weight down... just not sure what I'll replace that with when winter sets in! Glad Tom made out ok with surgery and you are feeling better.
southern - Wow 2.2 lbs that's great keep up the good work! Your walking must really be working.
I want rid of this pound I found at the 4th of July!! You would think with all the exercise I am getting that the weight would be falling off.... NOT .Big sigh... somehow I must do a little better with my healthy eating - have not been the best lately! LOL BUT I did get back into a pair of shorts that I could not wear at all 3 months ago!!! so something is working. I just want that scale to say 119! amazing the difference in 120 and 119! LOL Just like in golf ... an 89 is great a 90 so so! LOL
While playing golf today( I shot a 93 just like my weight I want to be lower again! LOL) my daughter called and said she would be home for the day - surprise visit! So we cooked filet mignon on the grill tonight. Her friend is coming later for cosmos! LOL When am I going to do better with healthy eating...???
The countdown is on to the James Taylor concert tonight. Just hope I can go. Some of it depends on how Harry the Wonder Dog is doing. He seemed to have a pinched nerve in his hip or hind leg yesterday when we came back from the river. This morning he couldn't get up to greet me. His hind end was pretty flacid and almost paralysed. I rushed him to the vet and they think he has some kind of (hopefully temporary) slipped disc in his back, a fairly common problem with some dogs they say. It shows up between the ages of 3 and 7 and Harry is 5. He is on meds, and is confined to a small area in the kitchen, ordered onto strict bed rest. If he seems grogged out by the narcotics this evening I'll go out but otherwise may have to miss the show.
Glad to hear Tom's surgery is over and successful. It's a pain being one handed. I've done it before.
You are all so busy and exercising and losing and golfing etc etc and I just want to say congratulations on the effort, everyone! I played a little golf yesterday morning. It was great. With all that is happening this weekend though, sick dog, son moving out, daughter moving in, my meals are sporadic and not always the best. Gratefully, I stayed the same weight this week in spite of all the stress and the poor choices and the chopping and changing. I am hoping for calmer waters next week.
And here's one for the girls who married rich, even if it was only for a while - " Of the biliionaires I've known, money just brings out the basic traits in them. If they were jerks before they had money, they are simply jerks with a billion dollars". - Warren Buffet
Hello everyone,
I don't have a lot to say this evening. I just wanted to check in. My scale has said the same thing for 5 days straight. I'm hoping tomorrow is the day it drops again. We'll see.
Robbie - I'm glad to hear you are feeling better and that Tom's surgery went okay. Don't overdo it with exercising too soon. Better slow than too fast.
We lost touch with the other Larry and Beth years ago but they had 4 children. My Larry and I had only 3. But all three of our kids have sure been productive. My oldest daughter has 3. My son has 5 and my youngest daughter has 4. These 12 grandchildren came quickly too. The oldest is only 12. I delivered 6 of them. Two of them only 3 weeks apart. That was fun!
Bonton - If you don't mind me asking, where do you live? 88 degrees sure sounds better to me than what we have here. But they say we only have two seasons here in South Texas (Summer and January) ![]()
It is funny how jumping down from 120 to 119 is such a milestone. Or in my case that's more like from 180 to 179. But my scale is currently stuck at 187.8. So, I still have a ways to go before I get out of the 180's.
Rebex - I hope your dog gets to feeling better. And I hope you don't miss the JT concert. That would be a shame. Our dog is also ill. Her name is Ina May. She's a hound dog. I let her heart worm prevention lapse and now she has heart worms. We opted for the "no kill" treatment because of our vets recommendation. But that means she will be on medication for a long time and hopefully outlive the heart worms. She seems slightly better today. We just found out about this 2 days ago. I feel really bad that I didn't keep her on the prevention meds. I should know better.
Well, I said I didn't have much to say. I guess I lied.
I'm just too talkative to keep things brief.
~ Beth
southern- I live in central PA and with your weather I'm sure 88 probably does sound like it's cool LOL. Sorry about your dog
my daughter is allergic to dogs so we won't ever have one.
Bex -sorry to hear about your dog too. I hope he is on the mend and you don't miss JT! LOL about your quote - my ex didn't have money when I married him but became rich thru his business (which I helped him buy into GRRR but def didn't get my money back) anyways the money def brought out his worst traits! the worst one being self centeredness(is that a word??)...he is the epitome of a narcissist. Glad to be out!! This time around I have a wonderful husband!!!!! Our anniversary is Thursday - 9 years!! We are going to a resort in Berkeley Springs, WV to play golf.
My hubby is on vacation this week, we are going to stain the deck then off to Berkeley Springs for 3 days. Today he is scrubbing the deck and I am mowing the grass! It has been growing like crazy in this humid weather. Logged all my foods yesterday - didn't do as bad as I thought 1300 calories and I got an A- ... so not as bad as I was thinking.
Everyone - have a great day!!
Hi everyone. Thanks for the well wishes about Harry. He is still hanging in there but no improvement to report this morning. Still paralysed in the rear end. I took him in to have his bladder drained at midnight and I think that helped him to rest. I went to the concert last night as my son was going to be home to watch over Harry except for a couple of hours. JT was absolutely fantastic. He was in very fine voice and seemed to have a good time at the show. He gets better with age, like fine wine. The person that he is shows in the relationships that are evident between his band members on stage. They truly look like a happy family and you can tell they adore him, which the audience did also. He did all the old favorites and some of his new covers of old songs made famous by others. He is funny and very natural onstage. Glad I didn't miss it. Had fries and mini donuts because caution had been thrown to the wind after the day from hell.
Bon - your husband will have to get you a new pottery pot for your garden for your 9th anniversary because I can't think of anything sexy or fun that is made out of clay...unless you can...and I'm not going there.
Beth - keep on truckin' with the exercise and your scale will move down again soon. I've been on hold for 2 weeks but off my routine and not doing as well with the mix of carbs fat and protein as I would like. As soon as I get through the current round of stress with the "kids", and the dog, I'll make myself my number one priority. Here's my thought for the day because things are weighing heavy on my mind...
"Man is a strange animal. He generally cannot read the writing on the wall until his back is up against it." - Adlai Stevenson
hi all
first, are any of you having this problem. All our names of been changed to anonymous. This is happening on Tuesday July 15/08.
Well, I lost another 3 pounds. Something which hasn'thappened in weigh too long!
one - good for you - 3# loss!!! I've been stuck since the 4th of July
but then again I haven't been as good with healthy eating either! LOL
bex - How is your dog?? I hope on the mend. I love all the quotes you find!
ohio- I throw those things out from AARP !! LOL Can't change it but don't know that I want a senior discount just yet! LOL Hope you had a great golf game.
My hubby and I got our front porch scrapped, scrubbed and primed the bad spots so it is ready for polyurethane enamel tomorrow. He is going to paint the floor while I golf! Somehow that doesn't seem fair but he volunteered.
Yesterday we stained the deck so we're really getting some projects done! Leaving Thurs for our mini golf vacation for our anniversary - can't wait to get away! We've been working hard the past few days!
robbie - How is your hubby doing with his recovery??
Hi everyone,
Congratulations to oneis2many and ohio45! That's great about dropping pounds today. My weight was up today by 2 lbs! But I'm certain it was just because I ate late the night before. But we'll see what tomorrow brings.
Ohio - I agree with you about the senior discounts. My husband turns 55 this year. We're looking forward to some of those senior discounts coming our way. We get them occasionally anyway. We aren't quite old enough yet but since we both have a lot of gray hair, sometimes people just assume and give us a discount anyway.
Those gray hairs have to be good for something, right?
Rebbex - Hope Harry gets better soon. My dog has heartworms. She is on meds for treatment and so far it looks like she is going to make it.
Bonton - You guys have so much energy with all those projects you do! Want to come to my house? Larry and I mowed and edged our front yard yesterday and I ran out of steam. Or maybe we had too much steam. The humidity here is always very high. That's why I always walk in the early morning and late evening.
One - I didn't notice our names on the website being "anonymous" today but it did seem that no one could post for several hours this afternoon. Something about permissions being set to "read only." It sounds like someone got some things messed up while managing the website. That happens sometimes. But everything seems to be working fine now. This is a pretty big site. I wonder how many administrators it takes to keep it going. I manage a couple of websites myself but nothing this big. It must take a lot of work.
Well, I didn't walk this morning because I banged my little toe last night. It was so sore. But it's much better now. So Larry and I are about to go for our evening walk.
Ya'll have a nice evening. I'll check in tomorrow.
~ Beth
Hi everyone,
I’ve been reading about everyone’s activities but haven’t posted because I have no good news. I’m still up the 4 lbs. I gained June/early July. I’ve been exercising and eating healthy—just too much healthy food. So I stop logging, regain the few pounds I lost. I log, then go out for a meal and it just seems too difficult to log food when eating outside.
I can’t accept this and readjust my maintenance 5 pounds up. My first goal was 150 lbs. and what I actually want is 5 pounds below that. I’m going to try just writing down what I eat. That is what I did before joining CC and it helped me lose the first 10 lb.
Congrats ohio45 and one is 2many on the loss. Way to go.
hi all...just joined in on the fun...oic...well anything is worth a shot...i have yoyoed in weight all my life....a life plan for sure..but find as the 50 mark is very near is getting harder to take off yet I am still very active and work out but it just doesnt seem to work as well anymore...I work nights as well which is doublely hard to manage a life never mind eating habits...but enjoy reading everyone's comments....helps to hear from those in the same position.
frostslave..I can relate to the night shift and it is not easy maintaining a "healthy " lifestyle working shift work. I try to get to the YMCA 3 times a week. I seem to do alot better following routing with workouts when I am working but when I hit a day off I like to slack off and not go. Working shift work does help me plan meals a little better and I can control what I eat at work. (cafeateria isnt open) but its days off when I am cooking supper for my husband that screws me up. He is very thin and loves food all food so cooking for him puts me in a bind to eat the same meals at times. He is very understanding and supportive in my efforts to loose weight but cooking two seperate meals is sometimes a drag. He likes potato chips and I watch him eat them and try to munch a celery stick.
It gets hard sometimes. I eat mostly healthy but I like "seafood:"...I see food I like to eat it!..Its a yoyo existance. I keep saying I would like to be like my husband eat what I want when I want...but not such.\I have a weakness for popcorn. But there are more terrible snacks. Its a daily struggle and the scale doesnt move down as quickly as it used too at all. Just working out long enough to get a sweat on is hard enough. The 30 min on the tredmill just doesnt seem to do it anymore..but persistance is the key..so work and keep busy at work i find that helps me if I am busy at work I dont tend to think of food . keep moving forward..
jobelize![]()
oneis2many...Just a thanks for this thread. Its nice to know we dont stand alone in our fight against the bulg at 50+..I enjoy reading the posts..keep your head tall and move forward...
jobelize
jobelize Welcome! We have a great group so just join right in! I've always said "when I come back in this life I'm going to be one of those ppl that can eat anything they want and stay skinny!" LOL someone needs to find out why those ppl can do that and then market it into a supplement that we can all take!! My daughter's husband eats well over 3000 calories a day, doesn't work out and has a hard time hanging on to his weight WHAT???!!!
Speaking of frost - Where are you??? and Helene?? everyone else who has not posted lately???
southern It is hard to do a lot when it is humid and you have much higher temps than we do. This week has been quite nice so far but the heat and humidity is supposed to climb today and tomorrow. Glad we have early tee times when we go away.
Today I am taking a day off from "working" at our house! Going to a golf tournament with my friend! Hubby is finishing the porch while I'm playing
Didn't eat enough yesterday - just didn't seem hungry and when I logged my calories 1100
will need to do better today. Have been doing a little better with protein. I find when i don't log that I am really protein deficient - NOT good.
