Hi to all ![]()
It's Sunday and we're going to visit my mother-in-law. Used to be a tough one, but now she's 80+ with Alzheimers, and has finally progressed to the stage where she's softening up - all the nicer things about her are "coming out" now, she's laughing a lot and paying people compliments - so there we are, in this case one positive side of this terrible disease.
Jen, I live in the Netherlands, but just to make it easy I'm actually Danish![]()
Alylou, I do respect the way you keep track of everyone! New middle age music is music played with instruments from then, with a touch of "now". So you have a harp, lyra, funny drums and fluits of all sorts etc. Lots of rythm, deeeeeeeep sounds, often a singer or two. Nice when they don't overdo it - as with all things. About mental coaching: I can only coach a person who actually wants to improve something, learn something, change something. There are things to practise and lots of honesty involved - how do you think that sounds to your teenage-girsl. But we can always give it a shot
By the way - how old are 7th-graders?
I have a question for you ladies: any of you reckognize this - pms as in being all bloated from from app 2 weeks before it's time, and I mean reallllly bloated? What do you do about it? Drinking doesn't seem te help much... (Can't wait for it to be overrrr)
Lastly I must agree with the honoured speakers before me - I would NOT want to be 20 again; I believe it was Chris putting it nicely: with a 20yo brain, MY 20yo brain - eeeek. I mean - I was almost 40 before realizing and coming to terms with who and what I am, and still working on it - imagine having to start all over again...
Have a nice Sunday - time diffs are confusing, but anyway. Talk to you in a few days time.
Hello all... I'm curious - are any of you trying (or have tried) any specific diet plan - like South Beach, Flat Belly, Perricone, etc.? If so, how's that working for you? When I first began my diet this time, I thought I'd try something more rigid than I did before, so I ordered the Flat Belly diet book and joined their site. In about 30 minutes I discontinued my subscription. It was too overwhelming just looking at the menus and grocery list. I'll admit that my plan isn't the ideal healthiest - yeah, I do Lean Cuisines and I don't buy everything organic - but I think I strike a good balance between healthy and reasonable for my hectic lifestyle and budget. I'm trying to incorporate the best of all the diet plans I've seen - like lots of salmon, melon and blueberries from the Perricone diet, MUFAs throughout the day like the Flat Belly diet, of course, tons of water like EVERY diet... I'm interested in what you all think are the best tips from all the various diets you may have researched or tried and what small incremental changes we could make that might make a big impact. Anyone interested in sharing?
Chris
I hope everyone is doing well with their weight loss. I didn't think this week was so bad, but my body thought otherwise, and I'm UP 2 lbs. Hopefully that's just an odd fluctuation, since I have been exercising and had a calorie deficit. *grumble*
Hello All -
First, welcome to Jascat -- tell us about your name, please? Another cat-lover ?? for our dear friend Connie (whom you haven't "met" yet - but will as soon as she returns to us.) Or perhaps "jas" as in "jazz" music? something I love.
Gosh-there seemed to be so many new ideas and comments on our happy forum. I'll try to answer a few that I remember.
First - for whomever asked, I live in Arizona - near Phoenix. Hot HOt HOT as I am always complaining about. Yesterday the LOW was 96*
Maybe we should do a group listing to reacquaint everyone - like where you live, weight goals, your age, real name IF you care to give it, kids or no kids, married, single, etc. How can we gather all that info. in one place so we can all see it?
Axe - don't worry about the 2 pounds. I always figure pounds can't just mysteriously jump on all by themselves if you've been under your calorie count and exercising, it HAS to just be water. But I do sympathize - because those mystery gains always put me in a horrid mood.
Chris - I don't do any other sort of diet plan. I just follow CC. For me,the real thing was understanding (a) portion sizes; (b) that certain seemingly "healthy" foods were loaded with calories (like bagels), and (c) what my calorie needs really were/are.
Tru - your castle-fest sounds a lot like the "Renaissance festival" we have in the Western US. We went for the first time last spring. It was, hmmm, in-ter-est-ing. Very different experience. A bit too bawdy for me - especially since our kids were with us. But the jousting and one of the comedy acts and a man with trained birds of prey were quite good.
Lucy - glad you got to enjoy the water park. I've always been intimidated by those -- was it a place with all the water slides and wave pools, etc.? I did go to a resort once with a lazy river and did really enjoy that part. I think you were also asking about travel -- (sorry if it was someone else) - my favorite by far is ALASKA. I haven't been out of the US too much, but I adored our Alaskan vacation last year. My favorite US city is Chicago, followed by San Diego, Boston and Seattle (haven't been to NYC yet) and I do love acting like a kid in Orlando at the Disney parks. I also love Yellowstone and the redwoods in Northern California.
Aly - Oh Aly - the stories I could tell you about my "toxic" friend. Hmm, it will have to wait for a day at your cabin. You wouldn't believe some of the things she put me through. Anyway, I hope you are doing well and also thank-you, as someone else said, for always keeping everyone in the group connected together. BTW, how is your elderly neighbor from your cabin?
Well, before this becomes another novel, I'll say "bye". No slight intended to Janet, Skn, Jennytu, Suz and anyone else I failed to say hi to directly. Here's a big HELLO to all of you!! Justamom/Sue
PS. My son with the new braces is finally feeling much better - 5 days later. He hasn't even asked for motrin today and went to church and ate 2 regular meals with no complaints. Thanks for all your support.
Hi to all my "LOSER" friends! I see we've "GAINED" a couple of newbies since my last post! Thank you's out to all of you for being so very sweet and jumping to my defense...You ladies are the best. Newbies welcome of course! So HAPPY to have you join us. I guess you are already seeing this is a great forum full of fun facts laughter sadness DRAMA weight loss/gain DRAMA supportive friends no matter what situation DRAMA LOL I really think you will like it here and we have all been successful at the weight loss even though slow at times which IS natural and although frustrating is the best way to finally keep it off. Sue I think that would be great to have a list with some stats so someone figure out how where etc. cause heck you see how long it took me just to get a picture up...um but we won't discuss that! LOL I will go back and reply to all of the posts tomorrow 'cause for now I am extremely tired. I just wanted to check in and say I'M BAAACKK!!!! Great evening to each and every one of you girls! Conniecat
Oh yeah due to the latest stress I have been eating like I used to and have gained about 4 lbs. I am praying at least 2 lbs is water due to the TOM crap I am experiencing STILL!!!
This too shall pass. I will work on it beginning tomorrow! LOL![]()
Hi Ladies,
justamom- The water park had the slides but since I was hurt on one of them years ago they are not for me. I hid under an umbrella with a magazine during that time. The wave pool was great. Thanks for the travel tips it was me. I've added those to my list. The only one I've been to is Disneyworld.
Chris- I've did many diets and the only one that worked for any length of time was Weight Watchers. I lost a large amount twice on their plan. If I get back to goal I'll go back because I'm a lifetime member and the support in the meetings is fabulous. I just got tired of the cost and I got very obsessive about it.
I've also tried:
South Beach- I think I only lost a few pounds.
Michael Thurmond diet- Dropped 20 lbs quickly and then nothing, plus it seemed limited
Slim Fast - Those drinks were like nothing and I still wanted to eat all the time. Didn't work for me at all.
Atkins - Again dropped 20 lbs quickly and then nothing and got sick sick sick of eating meat, cheese, and eggs.
I've also tried many others that I've read in books like Richard Simmons, One that was supposed to teach you to eat like a thin person, the cookie diet that was popular in the 80's, another drink mix diet. I took a prescription diet pill only once and didn't like the way it made me feel.
I've found what works for me and what I learned at Weight Watchers is eat whatever I want and count it for the day (in Weight Watchers it would be points and here calories) and exercise. After all that, can you believe this is the first time I've actually counted calories. I've been fighting my fat since the summer before I went into High School when I lost 50 pounds for the first time. I'm really sick on my yoyo life and I'm hoping this will be it.
Tru - We also have a Renaissance Festival here but I haven't been. I'll have to check it out next time they have it.
Hope everyone's Monday goes well.
Lucy
Sue, love your idea...how about this:
everyone private message me (if you haven't done that before, there is a "send message" link next to our pict) with the info you want listed and I'll post it. Lets aim for the following info: Name, location, marital status, # and ages of kids(or catkids
)age, height, starting weight, current weight, goal weight. We might add occupation....So if you are uncomfortable listing any piece of info, just leave it out!!
With the way the editing functions work on this site I can't think of a better way to end up with it being just one post that everyone can refer to...anyone else have a better idea?
Connie, your my favorite DRAMA queen!![]()
Sue, loved Alaska too! except for a very scary encounter with a wolf while we were backpacking in Denali Nat.Park... Alaska is just so rugged! breathtaking! Look forward to you stories while Connie mixes us drinks at the cabin!!! My neighbor is out of the hospital with a stern finger wagging to listen to his daughter who is TRYING to take care of him! such a dear...stubborn...but a dear. Thanks for asking! Glad you boy has the transition behind him, the worst is over.![]()
Bummer Axe, but I'm sure it must be temporary, hormones, or heat, too much salt, or the diabolical scale god....![]()
Chris, I pretty much just looked to cut calories and be healthy. I did find that cutting way back on starch/carbs helped tons..but did nothing formal. I am aware of the 'superfoods', now a bunch of them are the MUFAs, and have tried to increase my families consumption of them. I'm afraid I am too much the rebel, as soon as someone tells me I CAN'T eat or do something, that is what I am driven to eat or do! lol![]()
Lucy, I hope too that this can be the time when you change for good! (pun intended
) yoyoing is so hard on so many levels, physically and psychologically!
Ok, I am heading back up to the cabin tomorrow am, and will be there for over a week, so my postings will be less frequent, but I'll be lurking about! I will start the new INFO POST asap!
G'nite, Alylou
Hi All
Thanks for the gracious welcome everyone
Ok so I confess i have not officially started recording my food intake this weekend because my hubby decided to talk some time off - so we have been living it up a bit - since I am feeling back to normal. But come Monday I am recording everything I put in my mouth as well as my all activity. I really want to live a healthy lifestyle and that means losing the extra lbs.
Justamom - Yes I am a cat lover. I like jazz also, but Jascat I picked because of one of my daughter's cats - Jasmine. I also have a cat at home (grandcat I should say cuz he was my daughter's also but she could only have one pet when she rented her apt so I gladly took the other - Jax)
Suzenf - I am just north of Naples in a town called Cape Coral, but I am originally from Flint Mi.....I just love love love Florida. Been here 5 years now and got both kids to move down here.
Alylou - Believe it or not the surgery was not so scary this time - it was my third and last - got an artifical valve this time so I am good to go. I am relatively healthy otherwise and dont have any other vices besides food......so of course I would like to get my weight under control so I can enjoy the 2nd half of my life. Stuart - I think that is on the East coast....I have relatives in Port St Lucie which I think is close. Havent been there yet to visit but the East coast is also beautiful.
Everyone have a good week !!!
Have had a bad weekend (or good depending on how you look at it!) food and drink wise.... ate at our local italian friday night and then went to a friends bbq last night and ate steak, rice, salad etc. followed by a creamy coconut pudding our Brazilian friend brought along.... condensed cream is the main ingredient, I believe - yikes! We all ended up sitting outside until 2.30am...drinking way too much wine as well....had a VERY slow day today, lol...but it was a very fun evening :)
Connie, glad you are back with us....just need momo and skn to check in again soon!!
Good idea on the group updates...will send my msg alylou..
Bye for now, Suz

What a great idea to have these info posts. It will really help us newbies.
I really get a lot out of reading our posts. I live away from my family; my kids are grown up and I don't have a lot of friends in this area so my support system is minimal. Except for phone contacts home, there is just my husband and a couple of friends so I really enjoy reading about new people I have something in common with even if you are all far away.

Great job Aly on our information gathering post. I love reading all about "US" all in one place.
Welcome back Connie - it is soooooo great to see your picture, instead of the cute cat one, in the corner of your message.
I took my daughter to register for Senior year of HS today. Man, where have the years gone? I know many of you have kids older than mine, so you've been through all of this before. It's kind of shocking - how fast these grown-up teen years come, isn't it?
I will try to post a few pictures of my Chicago trip on my profile in the next day or so for anyone interested. We were looking at some last night: it is the first time in at least 10 years that I haven't been mortified at seeing myself in photographs.
Suz - your BBQ sounds like it was so fun. Especially the coconut pudding, YUM. I love late nights talking with friends. I always think the "party after the party" is always the best: when the true friends just sit around and laugh and relax with one another. Well worth the calories!
Janet/Jan - glad we can be your supportive group of friends.
Jascat- your daughter's cat is named Jasmine; my daughter is named Jasmine!
Axe/Karen - loved your "no man, no pets, no kids - no problem!" Reminds me of the saying about how things like "menopause" "mental illness" etc. start with M-E-N. LOL
Lucy - I'm very familiar with AutoCad. My dad is an engineer (mechanical) and uses it all the time. He even designs things like our outdoor sprinkler system, etc. on Autocad for us!
Hello to everyone else - and those who haven't checked in for awhile. Sue
Mom,
I use Autocad to work out everything at my house also like designing my tile backsplash at my old house. I've just done a plan for a paver patio now I have to go see how much all of it will cost. It's a handy tool. I remember the old days of board drafting but I'm soooo glad I'm not still having to do that anymore.
Chris, I did a number of diets (lost weight, but put it all on and more when I stopped) and they all said there were things I shouldn't eat. So sooner or later I did - eat those things. When an athlete tells me about being under pressure and at that moment thinking: "I can't make a mistake now, I musn't" - then what do you think happens? Indeed: every time they will make exactly that mistake. It's like telling you: "Under no circumstances may you think of a pink elephant just now." What happens even though you don't want it? Right - so that's how it works with diets as well: "don't eat this and that" - and that's exactly what I'll think about when hungry or down, and ultimately I will end up eating it.
Which is why cc works for me - no special restriction ECXEPT for the ones I make, because I don't want to break my diet. This way I'm in control - I can read exactly what my "costs" have been when I had something heavy on the cals, and I can read what I need to do to balance it out. That way my brain works with me, not against me.
Aly, what a good idea with the listing! Are you so well-organized in the rest of your life as well?
About Castlefest once again - I've no idea whether it's something like your rennaisance-thing, - it had a great kids-program with lots of volunteers and a nice family-atmosfeer, the evenings were more for the youth with louder and very rythmic "new old" music... I might find a way to post some photo's, I'll let you know.
I'm finally back! We were in China for two weeks to adopt Mikayla and then had one week to adjust before I started teaching exchange students from China for two weeks. It's been way too hectic here! I think I've gained weight but I've promised myself that I won't get on the scale until next week so I don't get too depressed about it! We had to eat at restaurants in China for every meal so it wasn't exactly healthy and then having 20 extra kids every day for two weeks didn't help!
There seem to be a lot of new people so I'll add my info, too.

Hi all,
I'm not in a good way today. Someone I know lost her 9 year old daughter yesterday. She had a virus but apparently it was a lot worse than they thought and it affected her heart. A few days ago she was fine. I'll write more about it in my journal. It just breaks my heart. Right now I could eat a store full of chocolate but I'm trying to hold it together.![]()
Greetings -
I am back from New Orleans. Had a good time and feel kinda sad to be home. Felt good helping others out and enjoying camaraderie -- wish I could have done more. I told my husband to have the washer filled most of the way with water so I could deposit my nasty smelling cloths directly into it when I came thru the door Sat p.m at 11:30. Not pretty.
Well, I jotted down what I ate in the 8days away and took time yesterday to try and plug those foods in to get an idea of calories consumed. Hmmm, well let's just say that I am trying to get back on the straight and narrow again! Going out to Cold Stone Creamery at night for an ice cream treat was delicious but was also a big calorie hit!! My daughter (12yr old) had a blast too... funny that we were both in New Orleans, but it seems I only saw her when going to bed or getting out of bed. She hung out with other teens and had a completely different work location for the week. She was quite amused by the transvestite, “Ashley”, we ran into on Bourbon Street. Impressive pair of black pumps, short black mini-skirt and scarlet “blouse” (not sure if you can call it a blouse when it ends immediately below your breasts??) with matching earrings. Pretty good abs on ole Ashley, but the musculature of the stomach definitely screams male!! Oh what fun.
Like Sue, I did a quick read thru to see what I missed. Chicago sounds like it was a blast. Welcome to the new folks. Truus, my grandfather came from Copenhagen. Lucy - we saw some pretty amazing storms pass thru last week too. The heavens truly just seem to open up and dump down!!! Chris, Jan, Jas – you will enjoy this group immensely and despite our good-humor jabs we are happy to motivate.
Connie, glad to hear you are doing better. When I first starting reading your crown post... I immediately thought crown tiara <snicker>, but alas it wasn't your jewels that broke. Hope that sucker lasts a good while longer at that price!! My daughter has one of those wonderful youth hand gestures that basically says “what-ever, Loser!!” Starts with 3 fingers pointing up to make a W, sweeps to the side for the E and of course ends with the L on the forehead for loser. Perhaps something you can perfect for your oh-so critical pal as well as a few other handy thoughts I have in mind but won’t express in writing. LOVE your pictures – you look fantastic; but I had you pictured as a blonde for some reason!!
Suz – Happy Birthday (OK so I am a little late)!!
Aly – loved your “at goal” picture. Just how good does that feel? Yeehaw! You new hangout sounds great too.
Lucy – My heart goes out to your friend who lost their daughter. I feel heartbroken just reading it. I have lost a couple of my siblings young (21 & 33yrs), but I don’t know if I would recover if I lost my children. I was typing this long rambling note, when your post came thru. ![]()
Betsy – welcome home!!
I am located in the Northeast (VT) and have traveled here and there (CA, Seattle, OK, OH, IA, AZ, and along the east coast, some of eastern Canada as well as parts of northwest Germany and Amsterdam. Did I tell you guys about my “duh-moment” in Amsterdam? I was NOT thinking and let the kids turn on the TV in the hotel and flick thru channels. At that point they were 11-8yrs. Yes, you now know where I am going. Uncensored adult TV – live oral action happening. There were audible gasps and shielding of eyes – then the incredulous “what was that” question.
I work in development for a medical software company and have three children (sons 15 & 14, dau. 12). Married – will be 16yrs on the 26th of this month. I will also be turning 50 this year – last day of the year and I am 5’8” (or some shrunken version thereof). SW 179, GW 148, CW 146. I also breed quarter horses – so about 18-20 of those 4-legged beasts.
Nuff said for now.. gotta run.

Welcome home Skn.
Welcome HOME Betsy and new daughter - can't wait to see pictures
And prayers to you Lucy as you try to comfort your friend after her devastating loss. As Skn said (and I'm sure we all feel), I don't think I could survive the loss of a child.
More later - Sue
Thanks Sue and Mom.
