The fact that you're even here is a good thing, seekinmy!  Seriously, I have gone months even years at a time knowing I'm fat but just pitying myself and avoiding scales and mirrors or the world in general.  So when you actually go, "Oh crap, I need to do something about it," that's a major step!

Welcome and good luck! :)

Awee thanks paganmist.  I have been unhappy with my looks for a while now, but it just takes that kick in the butt to realize it's time to do something and stop hiding it.  Time to get back to the way I should look.  No one will tell me that I need to lose the weight, so that makes it easier.  I get "you look fine" from my boyfriend, but when I told him I am going to get back to the gym he says "oh good."  Therefore, I realize even more that in the last 2 years I have become fat!!!

thanks paganmist I will check it out! I'm not sure where I've been on here.. there seems to be challenges going on everywhere.

Glad to see new people here. We all have been "newbies" at one time...I have been on here for about 2 years now. I dabbled in it and then really read a lot of postings asked questions and really followed all the ideas here. If you really really stick to it you can hit your goal. It might take awhile it isn't an over night fix, but you can and will see a difference. I have lost 70 lbs. I am down to 13% body fat last check at my gym. I have about 10 lbs more to loose maybe a little more or less just depends on how I look. I have said this before, I will always be in the 200's no way for me to get below that, I know that just from my body build and I am OK with that. After talking to my trainer and my Dr. I am cool with that. I don't want to start to loose lean muscle so I am here for the long hall. I wanted to get down to 225, but that won't happen either I don't think I think 230 is a goal I can live with. I am at 242 now...so only about 12 more to go. I have gone from a 44 inch waist to a 34 a snug 34, but a 34. I would like to be comfortable in a 34 I guess that will be my final goal then maintain and that will probably be my biggest challenge. We are all here to loose weight and to get encouragement in doing so, this is the best place to get it. Good luck to all and hope everyone reaches their goal!!!

Hello everyone! I am glad to see this a forum like this one around!
I am 22 and weigh 230 lbs. I am having some motivation problems and I'm hoping something like this will help me. I just joined weight watchers (sort of, I'm using my friend's book) and am having trouble eating all the points I'm supposed to!! Anyway, glad to be here.

I'm just checking in after starting on Feb. 28th.  I have lost 9 lbs. but know that is common the first month.  I should lose 1.4 lbs a week and think that is realistic.

I have never been so satisfied or felt better with an eating plan before this and I think it is because CC is such a hands on approach.

Could I get some comments on 'grazing'?  Do you think it helps to keep the calories trickling in as opposed to big meals several times a day?

I often feel I have to force myself to eat the full 1450 calories a day because I eat nothing that doesn't give me the most bang for my calorie buck, therefore I am always full.

Jeanran-Yes grazing does work much better. I eat almost all day. Mostly in the morning. I have breakfast early about 5am then at work I eat something like a banana, about 2 hours later, then yogurt, a snack a little later, then a small lunch, another afternoon snack and reasonable dinner then a snack no later than 7:30pm. I have a health plan at work and I have talked to a nutritionist and she said that by "grazing" your body burns that off quicker and boost your metabolism and keeps you feeling full and not so hungry so you don't eat as much at one sitting. It really helped me a lot. I used to eat like 3 large meals a day now I just snack pretty much all day on healthy stuff. I never really feel hungry, but never over full either. If you put in exercise right after your largest meal like dinner you will burn off a lot of what you ate and still feel full, that helps burn off the fat and leave lean muscle, learned that too.

Hope that helps...

I am totally new to this forum thing... and too this site. I am as far as I can find the heaviest person.. I need to lose like 146 lbs just be at a reasonable goal weight. I just had a baby about 4 months ago and have four children total. My last baby was a c-section and after her birth a weighed like 296. I am not real sure what all of you mean your deficts and stuff like that. But I have struggled with my weight my whole life, and need to move away from the 300 lbs mark as quick as i can. I am 5' 6" and currently weigh around 280 not real sure because i don't have a working scale. But I really don't excersise and I have done a calorie counting thing before where i just dropped the number of calories i eat every week. but the i wound eating like 900 calories a day and felt like i was straving.. Any advice you long timers have would be apperciated by this newby I don't want to lose too fast but I very scared of staying still in weight...

thank you and sounds like I need to congratulate a lot of you on your weight lose thus far...... Keep up the good work!!!

hey sabybaby there's lots of good advice to be found here and supportive people. I started counting calories a couple months ago and I've lost about 15 lbs. I started at 303 at 5' 7". I think the concepts found here are what will work for us. No magic, not super fast but in it for the long haul. We can do it! Don't go below 1200 a day for sure and with us being bigger I would say not to go below 1600. But use the tools to find whats right for you. In the forums look for "calorie count" and look in the library I think there are helpful things for starting out. Good luck. Stick around you'll find lots of help.

Stinky1, this is valuable information and I will start doing this.  Thanks a bunch for taking the time to respond.

I read somewhere that if we overload on a meal, much of it goes to fat but if we eat the same amount over a longer period it will be burned as energy.

I just found this article from Reader's Digest that suggests by eating every few hours it keeps our metabolism fired up.

Hi I just joined up last week and am really liking the supportive environment. I'm at my heaviest 242, luckily I'm tall-ish (5'9") but my sister still says I look like a potatoe on legs.

I recently joined Curves and have started drinking Arbonne shakes (lactose free) for breakfast and counting my calories the rest of the day. I would love to be able to walk up a flight of stairs without puffing when I get to the top.

I know the grazing is good for people with hypoglycemia, it helps stablize the blood sugar over the course of the day, and I know it helps me not be as ravenously hungry when it's meal time. Too bad they don't have something like chocolate grazing though! :D

Thinking about buying a scale, but I don't want to get obsessed with taking my weight... does anyone here make themselves wait to weigh themselves? I feel like it will be more rewarding if I only do it once a month. Anyone feel the same?
#534 betsyt Apr 09 2007 21:40
kittie - I weigh once a week.  It helps me keep an eye on any "upward trends" and nip them before they become problems (as I'm afraid they would with only weighing once a month) but I don't obsess about the more frequent day to day fluctuations (which I know I would if I weighed every day).  You do what works best and is most comfortable for you - that's just what works for me.

And GOOD LUCK!!
#535 betsyt Apr 09 2007 21:43
Oh! And if you want to "choclate graze" get a package of m&m's and then eat them slowly throguhout the day.  You have to budget because I think it's about 260 calories, but if you are a chocoholic, it might help the cravings throughout the day without feeling deprived.  I sometimes bring just one of the fun paks with me to work (considerable less calories) and have it over the course of the day so I am not tempted to have too many. I know if that's all I get I ration and savor them more! :)

They (as in diet experts) say to weigh yourself once a week at the same time that way you can see the changes. If you weigh yourself several times a week you will notice that you gain and loose weight during different times during the day. So stick to one time once a week and try not to be too obsessive I know that can be hard, but you will notice a difference. I think waiting once a month would kill me even being a guy I couldn't go with out weighing myself at least once or twice in a month especially if I am noticing a difference.

Howdy All! My first post here on CC. I just wanted to check in and say hi. I've been reading posts to keep me motivated; thanks for many of your insiring stories. I'm 6' & 290lbs (it hurts just to type that) and I've lost 20lbs so far. I've always had a weight issue and have yo-yo dieted many times. I'm committed to a healthier lifestyle and am focusing on "eating smart" right now. Starting a formal exercise plan is on the horizon. My goal is 210lbs so I have a long way to go but I'm staying positive. Just wanted to say hi...congrats on everyone's successes so far.

Hi all, This is my first post too. I am at my heaviest also 252. I have done all kinds of diets and diet pills. The weight goes off the minute I stop the diet or the pills the weight comes back on.

Most of my weight gain came from taking anti-depressants for so long...it slowly added on the weight till it got to the point that I am all but miserable. 1-because of the weight and 2-because I refuse to take any more pills for it so I am probably a bit depressed.

It is always nice to see that you are not the only one...not that I wish this on anyone just glad to have some that understand first hand.

I went to see a hypnotist today I am so desperate...he wents 1200 bucks for his program. I have to figure out a way to do this for myself and for it to be a life long change to stop this yo-yo I have been on cause I don't have 1200 bucks to spend.

Hope I will get some ideas from ya'll...it is encouraging to see the weight you guys are losing.

To all new comers HELLO!!! As you can see I am one of only a few guys here and I have lost 70 lbs so far it can be done...it takes a lot of work and it isn't easy. Getting started is the hardest part. To me the first 20 lbs. was the easiest, but yet the hardest. Kind of hard to explain, but loosing the first 20 was easy as far as my body goes, but also the hardest to keep from eating things I shouldn't. Going out to eat, family gatherings it all adds up. Just be smart follow the guides, listen to the people here. Once you loose the first 20 the next are easy at least they were to me. Watching the scale go down and my clothes not fit anymore what a great feeling...looking in the mirror isn't so tragic anymore I can actually look at it and say yea I look pretty darn good and look at all the work it took, but it was well worth it!! If anyone wants to email me feel free...I also did the hypnosis thing as well, but it only cost me 50 bucks for 8 week session it was a group thing. Basically the guy said eat what you want but only half and that is what he instilled in my brain, but it didn't last very long after my 8 weeks it worked for a little while...but went back to my old habits. This so far is the best I have ever done and loving it!!

To Cleigh1:  I started here at 252 also -- at the beginning of this year.  To date, I have lost 30 pounds and I am so happy to have gotten this far.  Even though I have another 70 or so pounds to lose, I know that my coming to this site, I will be able to do it.  I understand what Stinky means when he says the first 20 are the hardest and the easiest.  Because you're changing your lifestyle eating habits.  They will change, slowly, but they will.  The biggest change I've noticed is that I don't want to eat "empty calories" which I never knew what that was until I found this place. I wish I had listened to all those calorie counting people years ago and started teaching myself about calories and metabolism.  Now I'm education about - not totally, but getting there.  Just keep reading the postings in the various forums because everyone's strength lies in their words and I find that to be a great help to me in continuing to go forward.  To the next 5 pounds and beyond!!!!
