Oh my, lightning is scary!!  And I see the mid-west has more tornadoes... and we have Bertha...mother nature is working overtime these days!!  Latest forecast has Bertha passing 100 miles to our east.  We are starting to see an increase in the winds...and our beaches are closed for swimming due to 18 foot swells and riptides....but hopefully no direct hit so that's okay!

Having a very quiet and relaxing weekend at home with the family... and plan to go out for dinner tonight (possibly Thai food?) Yummy Tongue out

Hi Everyone! I can't believe that it's been 5 days since my last post! Time sure flies when I'm busy.

New low on the scale today! It will probably go up tomorrow but the trend continues to go down. I went to see my doc on Wednesday and their scale said I lost 12 pounds since my last visit which was 2 pounds more than what my scale said... I like their scale better needless to say. I'm feeling the depression much less and messing around with timing on the medication for averting the weird effects (so sleepy during the day I can barely keep my eyes open).

The horse update on Rusty is that his feet are sore from the training so he's going to get his first set of shoes. After that the training will continue. I haven't heard from the trainer for a while. It will be one month since he left on Monday.

Sue/Mom-I've been to Tucson almost every year since my dad and his wife moved there 13 years ago, It's our main April break vacation since they pay for the plane tickets. I like it for a change of pace but the heat would kill me. We had a couple of hot humid days which for me was 87 degrees and 55% humidity. I was sweating rivers. It would've been a cold snap for you! Funny!

Connie-How scary about the lightning! Sounds like a good time for a calming PC. Wait... that's pretty much anytime isn't it?

Suze-Hurricanes are scary too. Every now and then we get one which comes up from your part of the world. It's been a while though. I remember the last one, my husband (stupidly IMHO) drove his sister and husband to the Boston airport and left me home alone with an infant in our partially finished house. It was good though. We were living in our enclosed timberframe home (roof, outside walls, and windows... all open inside) and the wind was really blowing and the house was totally solid. Made me feel safe in the end but I still hold it against hubby for leaving me there... the bum!

Aly-I saw the same word so here I am in the gutter. And good for you tackling a sweater! I'm impressed. I left all that sort of crafty stuff to my sisters who both sew and knit very well. I gave up sewing when I made a dress as a teenager which was supposed to have the sleeve shoulders sort of puffed up. well, one puffed and the other was flat as a pancake. One sister and my mom both tried to fix it to no avail. And knitting? Forget it! I could never keep count of the stitches and I'd have to rip stuff out over and over and things would never match 'cause my tension wasn't consistent. So I chose other endeavors. When you finish you can get some fashion photography done and show it off! We won't laugh... we promise!

Welllll, gotta get back to work. My client told me yesterday she wants all the shots done by Monday. Sigh.

So when I was checking out the temp on the weather channel site I came across this story... check it out! This girl in NH was struck by lightning and saved by her nose ring!

Hello all!

Connie, First of all I think it was your neighbor who ought to be thinking about what God is trying to tell her...His aim is pretty good...I doubt he would aim for you and get her! Surprised Second, you need to do as your nuns did and slap a ruler on the table! That will bring the kitties to attention...firecrackers seem a bit of overkill...Wink (ouch, your poor boob!) A friend's house was hit by lightning and fried ALL their electronics, they gave us an old tv that had its tv receptor parts fried but could still be used with a dvd player or video games. So we can let the kids watch movies or play games without giving in on our no tv idea...really worked to cut the whining. So I guess there is something good out of everything!Smile But Jenny, I STILL think nose rings are ghastly, SurprisedI know I am sounding like my mother here, but I guess I would rather fry than have that attached to my face.Frown

Had to laugh at your description of your knitting Jenny, it sounds just like what I am doing! Tore out three times so far...It may indeed be quite laughable when it gets done!Embarassed

Suz, no surfing, I know you are tempted! Wink Glad the storm is keeping a bit of distance!

Well hubby needs computer to enter his final grades for his summer school class...so I will catch up with Sue later! (Gosh were is Sue/Skn? I would have thought she would be back from vacation by now...)

Hi ladies,

I'm new here, but this seems like a logical place for me.  I'm 47 years old and got myself in shape ~8 years ago.  Then got myself out of shape ~5 years later.  I couldn't get back into it again, I'd try and try and quit and quit.  So two weeks ago I started working out with a personal trainer.  If half the battle is showing up at least he keeps me into the routine.  I'm watching calories, protein and sugar.  To my surprise women are supposed to have no more than 40 grams of sugar/day; a fat-free yogurt with fruit has 25 grams!  So I've changed my ways and have lost about 3 lbs.  Here's my question: have you paid attention to your sugar and protien intake, in addition to calories, and has it made a difference?  From what I know about metabolism (I'm a molecular biologist) it makes sense, I just haven't ever acted on it before...last time I got in shape I relied on Weight Watchers points.  But calories, protein, sugar, etc seems more practical, healthy and viable for the long-term.

Many thanks,  Karen

Hi Karen! Welcome! A molecular biologist... wow... cool title.

I have done every "food plan" out there, macrobiotic, vegetarian, low carb, low fat, etc etc. What's been working for me right now is sort of a combination. I found that without protein, and some fat, I get ravenous and overeat so low fat didn't work for me. Then I did low carb, cut out sugar and whites (flour rice etc) and, although that did work very well in my teens, it didn't work in my 40's. But I felt physically better eliminating the refined carbs so I stuck with that.

So now I avoid refined carbs, eat protein, try to eat non-starch veggies and fruit, AND I count calories. I used the tools on this site to figure out what I burn and what I should eat to lose 1 pound per week. I've lost 11 pounds since April 28, which I consider a great loss rate because I've also learned that the faster I lose, the faster it comes back on. I also use the food, weight, and activity logs on the site. I don't cook so I eat a lot of frozen dinners from the health food store which also makes it easier to count calories.

Good for you for getting help with a trainer! We all need help here which is why we support each other. I have no idea what type of "food plans" the others on this thread do, I've never asked, but whatever is working I say keep doing it no matter what others say. Some people have very strong opinions about how others "should" eat but I've found none of that on this thread. I think our age group makes us wiser and more accepting of people on different paths.

Jenny

Hi everyone! I'm only 43, can I still join in? I've read some of the posts and I like this group! Pleeeeeeeze???? lol

Let me know and I'll tell you more about me. Thanks!

Ok Karen and Momo you have been officially accepted into our little group! I put you both on the friends list so now there is NO ESCAPE! Seriously welcome and as I tell everyone you must only have a sense of humor to join us. We are very helpful with the ups and the downs of weight loss but we have all become good friends in the process learning alot about eachothers lifestyles. So lets here the dirt about you Ms Momo! LOL! Things have settled down here weather wise and is now back to 90's. oh well better than lightning. My weight has went back up a couple of pounds but that is my normal way I guess. The only thing Karen that i might add to you about weight loss success that has worked for me is alot of fiber and drink alot of water when you increase the fiber to help with the bloating and cramps you get at first. I have lost 40 lbs since December. Well actually I lost it before now but am maintaining my weight now for the last few months. It is still a constant struggle not to indulge in all of my "favorites". I believe ALL of the other girls exercise but meCry ! I have vowed to never get to 170 lbs AGAIN as long as I live!!!! I hopeUndecided Anyway WELCOME to you both.   Connie

Thanks for letting me in! :) Here's the dirt on me! Like I said, I'm 43. I'm married and have two kiddos. 15 yr old son and a 21 yr old daughter. Oh and my hubby will be 42 in August. I started losing weight at 236ish lbs in October and I currently weigh 177.6. I've had my ups and downs, of course. I stalled for a month by trying to eat my BMR! Imagine that! lol  So I've found my "magic" number and been losing since. I've tried WW, low fat diets, and didn't like them. I've had weight problems most of my adult life. I was in the Army for 4 yrs ( a long time ago!) and that's the only time I never had trouble with my weight.

I wanted to be 160 lbs by August 15th. But it doesn't seem to be working out that way. Which is fine with me. I rally don't care when I get this weight off, as long as I'm getting smaller. I work out in the gym like 3x a week. I do alot of cardio and some strength training to tone up.

I have a chronic back problem that keeps me out of the gym sometimes. Like the last few days. But I do what I can.

I write in my journal quite a bit and it motivates me when people comment in it. So if you get a chance, check it out.

Cantlose - you don't want to be 170 again and I can't wait to get there! lol  Too funny!!!

That is too funny! You sound like you are going to fit in to this group just fine!!! I will check out your journal and I am sure to add my 2 cents wherever possible! I did check out your pics and your kids are beautiful! I have not put any pictures but really intend to do so as soon as I get some friends to take some of me!  Hey don't give up on the 160 by August 15th...ya never know...seriously! You sound as if you are on the right track so keep it up Momo! I wonder where the rest of our group is?????? You will get "broken in" probably in the a.m. but don't listen to ANY of them 'cause I am the sweetest of the bunch!! LOL Hope you have a great evening.  Connie

In a rush...

Welcome newbies Karen and momo! We are a fun bunch and we range from two who have hit goal and are maintaining, to to others who are taking a longer walk on the weight loss path! But hang on to your hats, because we love to poke a little fun at each other!

Speaking of which, Connie did you say you drink a lot of water???Tongue out and NO, you are not the only slacker about regular exercise!(major slacker here!)

Hang in there Suz!

Sue I am sorry I got cut off yesterday...I hope having your daughter back home makes things calmer. I am sure you enjoy all the "my roomies were great, but the food was..." conversations that come after camps. It has been such a cool summer up here this year (I am wearing my down vest as I type!Surprised) that your intense heat sounds really good right now!

Be back soon with more time!

Alylou

PS: Karen I let the CC nutrition coach guide me, I would check my "grades" and try to keep it at an A or A-. I believe that controlled any leanings toward too much of any one nutrient. I did it this way to curb the "food Nazi" instinct that has reared its head from time to time in me, I just wanted to take control without being a fanatic...and anytime you want to be a guest speaker in my Life Science class let me know!!

Good to have another Karen here (yes, that's my name too; I know I never mentioned it before)!

This was a strange week.  Even with all the ups and downs (giving blood and having it make me so tired I was sleeping 9-10 hrs/night) I still lost my pound for the week, so I remain on course.

Oh, I also lost another inch from my waist and hips!  Soon I'll be under 40" in the keister, which will be great!  Another pair of pants are saggy/baggy.

Good Morning Ladies! Congrats Axe on the baggy pants and inches dissolving! Maybe I need to go and give blood 'cause I am having a terrible time sleeping these days...Menopause....hot flashes..night sweats etc. I thought i was past that since I went through it all in a major way around 37-38 but the HOT times are definitely back in full swing. I'm gonna continue calling you axe if thats ok to keep you seperate from the other Karen. Aly YES I drink WATER way before the Pina Colada time arrives soTongue out! I read a couple of great articles yesterday about plateaus. The main thing everyone was saying was when you hit a plateau have a CHEAT DAY! Eat something fattening once a week to bring up your calorie intake but don't go crazy and it takes your body back from what it has adjusted to...hmmmmm sounds interesting to me and i think i will give it a try. I will let you all know of course by either HOORAHS or bitching! LOL Gotta go get ready for the chiropractor and Moms eye appt. Have a FUN monday!Wink

Connie

Hello! Congrats on losing the inches! I think losing inches is so much better than weight. Afterall we want to look better. :) Pina colada's......I could go for one of those! hehehehe I've given up drinking anything besides water though. Until I get to my goal, then I'm having some drinks! :)

I've noticed I haven't hit a plateau since having some cheat days here and there. Just everyonce in a while I go up in calories, about 400-500 more than usual. I had stalled for like a month before and it was so hard to get thru that. I almost gave up, but here I am. Still being a loser! Wink

I'll check back in later! Have a nice day! Laughing

Welcome to momof2 and karen - we are glad to have you join us. As the others have said, bring your sense of humor, a little sarcasm perhaps Wink, and hop on board!

Just a short post for me today, friends. All is going well - but I neglected to tell you all in earlier posts that our family vacation is coming up soon. So soon, in fact, that this will be my last post for a while. We are leaving on the 5 AM flight tomorrow (it's 10:45 pm, my time now) to see some friends in St. Louis for a couple of days (Axe's neck of the woods, I believe) and then going to "Chicago, Chicago, that toddlin' town". We're going to go revisit some of my old favorite places, plus lots of new ones, too.

I'm a little worried about all the great Chicago-land food that is calling my name - but I've decided to indulge IN MODERATION and try to use the hotel's work-out room each morning.

So, take care everyone, can't wait to catch up with all of you when I get back. You'll all be in my thoughts.  Sue

Ahh - momof2, my thoughts exactly!!!!  I started here in March at 212 pounds, currently 177, can't wait to get "down" to Connie/Cantlose's "high of 170". Ultimately, I'm aiming for 147-150.

Hi Friends! Sue we will miss you. Be safe have loads of fun and bring us back some funny stories! I have one from yesterday that everyone should enjoy! Yesterday was my brothers birthday ok. He was supposed to go with some friends to this Asiana Grill (one of my favs to eat at) well plans fell through and of course he was dissappointed and GRUMPY so BEING the good little sister I offered to go with him to "celebrate". He was so grumpy he was like "No I'm just gonna grab something and go on blah blah" grump grump so I went on with my "little mom" to her appts and running around and we ended up with FATTENING lunch stuff like hotdogs potatoe salad etc (she will eat more if someone eats with her so.....) anyway after i finished all that good stuff I said I wouldn't be surprised if Michael didn't call and say let's go......JUST ABOUT THAT TIME THE PHONE RINGS...... now I just could not let him down so I went and had Asian food on top of what I had just 30 minutes before. I am still MISERABLE this a.m. I mean MISERABLE people! My stomach looked as if i had swallowed a basketball! I really could not sleep last night and then this a.m. I get up another 2 lbs up but boy oh boy what a GOOD LITTLE SISTER I am!!!!! My other brother thought it was hilarious and my mom was in amazement that I could even pull it off. Do you think even one of my three brothers would have suffered like this for me? SURE yeah right! NO! Anyway that was my day and now this a.m. I am thinking how can I get through today without eating ONE SINGLE BITE!!!UM I believe that comment about the cheat day has come back to haunt me! I'll let you know if tomorrow I have lost 5 lbs for being such an excellant cheater! Have a happy day girls!   ConnieSealed

Hello all, old and new!!

Well, we survived TS Bertha.  No major damage to the island, but it was a lonnngggg day of buffeting 60mph winds and heavy rain - the noise gets to you after a while, lol.... managed to hold on to our electricity as well (thats a BIG plus) although many homes in different neighbourhoods were left in the dark.  Sun is shining today and the sea has calmed down again....all there is left to do is clear the garden and pool of broken branches and debris - but need to wait til it cools down a bit before I go tackle that!!

Well I need to make a confession.......my eating habits have gone out the window this week.  I am not happy about it....but can't seem to get motivated enough to do something about it.  I was thinking earlier that it was due to my daughter being home from uni and wanting all her favourite homecooked meals.... but deep down I know i have no-one to blame but myself.  Oh well....tomorrow is another day Embarassed

Hope you are all doing okay!!!!

Suz

Good grief Suz! If I were in the middle of Bertha and had my daughter (to share favorites with) at home etc I would have already gained 10 lbs!! Definitely DO NOT beat yourself up about any of it! I'm sure we are just all very thankful that everything is ok. Just curious but how hot is it there? The 90's really get to me so I can't imagine Bermuda or our other "hottie" Ms Arizona!!! I believe I would melt. (plus remember the hot flashes i'm having) Oh No! Anyway glad that you are ok.   Connie

Suz - so glad you made it through the storm with only alittle cleaning up to do. Coulda been so much worse. Happy it isn't!

justamom - that's about where I think I wanna be (147-150). I keep playing around between 177 - 178 the past few days. I'm ready to see 175 already!

Had a good day today AGAIN! I'm on a roll now! I'm not eating late, eating good foods and lots of fruit to snack on. I've decided since I can't stay off the scale every morning to weigh in, write it down and then average it out at the end of the week. I'm happy with that and I won't be stressing out everyday over stupid fluctuations.

Anyone have trouble today posting? I couldn't send messages, or reply. It kept giving me a message that the server was set on "read-only" and to contact customer service. Then when I tried to send them a message, it sent me the same message! I was real frustrated and went thru cc withdrawals! so I went to the mall and got a smoothie! lol

Talk to ya'all later!
