RANTING BURNS CALORIES!

This is an open, ongoing, support-encourage-motivational-RANTING thread. Feel free to skip to the end, or spend days reading through all of this ...

* * *

I have decided that "Diet" is a 4-letter word.

I find myself muttering and uttering the word around my house these days with loathing and vehemence previously reserved only for comments directed toward liberal politicians. In fact, I seem to be talking to myself a lot more these days .... sort of a running, sarcastic commentary on all the foods I can't eat, or on various other related topics. I wonder if there is a link between calorie-deprivation and Tourettes Syndrome? Grrrrrrrrr.....

I am now on Day 8 of the dreaded D-word. This is already the longest period of time that I have ever successfully remained on a diet. And I seem to be growing grouchier and feistier each day..... at least when I am alone and no one is around to hear my running rants. (My wonderful DH has heard some of my more memorable rants on the subject of broccolli and reports that I am hysterically funny when I am hungry!) I am counting carbs. I am counting calories. I am counting fat grams. Sheesh ... now my math anxiety is about to kick-in!

Mini Rant #1 .... what masochist decided that the serving size of cereal was anything less than 2 cups? Have you ever measured out 2/3 a cup of cereal? Or even a full cup? And placed it in a bowl? Those few little flakes and pieces just sit forlornly at the bottom of the bowl, shivering and lonely, even when we dribble on a few meager droplets of skim milk! Sheesh. Well, I can tell you that there is simply no way that my oversized body is going to be happy with that tiny amount of cereal ... so I have been eating TWO servings for breakfast. SIGH. And while the side of the box says that I can supplement the cereal with some fruit, they probably don't mean eat 45 cherries with your cereal -- much less 1/2 a watermelon, huh?

Mini Rant #2 .... Things NOT to say to someone who has told you that they have just started on a diet:

1.Good, you sure needed it.
2. It's about time.
3. Really? It doesn't look like it.
4. Again? Haven't we heard this before?
5. Gosh, how much weight do you need to lose?
6. What do you weigh? I've always wondered.
7. I never need to diet, I have a fast metabolism.
8. Really? I can eat all I want and never gain weight.
9. Is THAT why you are so grouchy?
10. I sure hope you plan to exercise a lot more.

AAAUGGH! All of these responses are just the thing to make me even grouchier .... so just smile and say something encouraging and supportive, ok? I will let you know how it is going.

Hi all.  I am back from a 4 day mini break.  Went up the Central California Coast with DH and some friends.  We have a condo in Solvang, a little Danish town in the Santa Ynez Valley, north of Santa Barbara.  My aunt and uncle live in Nipomo, a smallish town south of San Luis Obispo.  We stayed a couple of days in Solvang and a couple with my relatives.  We go up there about twice a year for wine tasting, as there are many many many wineries up the central coast.  For those who watched the movie Sideways, the Solvang area is where the two guys went.  Anyway, I love wine and I love going wine tasting.  Luckily for me, my DH loves it too and I have relatives who live in the heart of the region:)  Needless to say the "diet" didn't go so well.  I tried to watch portions and such, but oh the food!  Our friend is Italian and a chef in his own right.  He made mashed red potatoes with gorgonzola, roasted garlic, butter, and milk, none of which were low fat.  But can I tell you, yum yum yum.  I go back to a previous rant, why can't mashed potatoes be considered a vegetable?  And roasted garlic with brie cheese on a french baguette, oh my goodness!  I honestly ate enough garlic this weekend to keep vampires away for a year.  I love brie cheese!  My DH keeps telling me that I need to take the emotional attachment out of food (ie:  I love brie), but I can't help it, I DO love it.  Anyway, it was a nice weekend, but now I am back on track.

Earlier posts inspired me to try some winter squashes.  We had spaghetti squash (jury is out) and butternut squash (yummy to my tummy) last week.  Now I am feeling like I want to try acorn squash and pumpkin (saw tons of pumpkins on my trip).  Molly's pumpkin dessert recipe sounds quite scrumptious.  Kind of like pumpkin pie, which I LOVE.

Stayonpiste- I also had half of my thyroid removed in 2003 and was placed on a small dose of levothroid in 2004.  I was fortunate enough to not have cancer.  I too have occasionally wondered about the "normal" levels of TSH.  For the first year, I was monitored quarterly for fluctuations, but now it is annually.  But I honestly think that it fluctuated over the course of the year.  I struggle with fatigue often and changes in mood, usually for no apparant reason.  I can't play the menopause card yet ( I mean no disrespect) or the age card ( I am just a little bit old) and I am working out and eating right (except for this past weekend) and working out and eating better is supposed to help with depression and fatigue, right?  So I have self diagnosed that I have "TSH flux".  Tell that one to your doctor.  It is very scientific sounding right?  I do understand your plight and hope everything goes well at the doc.

Yay- Molly put up a pic.  Finally a face with the rants!

Finally- I agree that men suck!  Well wait, my man doesn't suck totally.  It just sucks that he loses the same amount of weight as I do in half the time.  A month and a half ago, he tells me "I've lost 14 pounds since we came home from Kentucky (in June)"  My reply "Good for you" (she says with a hint of sarcasm and a large dose of envy).  At that time, I had lost 9 pounds and I was actually WORKING at it.  I work out 5-6 days a week, eat right (except last weekend), use portion control, and stay at a certain calorie level each day.  He cuts back an eensy beensy bit and loses 14 pounds.  It took me 3 months to lose that!  GRRRRRRRR!

Molly, Love the new pics!  It's nice to put a face with a name!  You and your hubby are so cute.  I HATED the thought of putting pics up on my profile.  I generally try to avoid the camera at all costs! :)  But...I would strongly reccommend doing the "before" pic.  Pictures don't lie!  :)  I cannot wait to go back and look at the fat pics and say WOW I cannot beleive I was that fat and I'll NEVER let myself get that way again!

Kris...I have a freind that had the gastric bypass too.  She was craving mcdonald's one day so we went (I know bad...very bad)  She had 2 chicken nuggets and was full!  Can you beleive that?! 2!! Of course, we won't get started on what one of those "mc" nuggets really consists of.

Ok...sorry for rambling and not really ranting either!  I just got so excited about seeing Molly's new pics, I had to post!  :)
#423 mollymouser Oct 09 2007 02:32

Welcome back, danagrl!!! I love the central California coast ... we're heading to Carmel for three days in December... and I'm sure we'll spend time in Monterey, as well. And, as far as the October VEGGIE Challenge is concerned, potatoes ARE vegetables as long as they aren't fried (that leaves out fries and chips, mashed potatoes are still safe!)  The food you described sounded well worth ignoring your diet over, that's for sure! What I hate is falling off the wagon for so-so food that really wasn't worth it!

Snorman, awww.... thanks. It took a while before I was willing to post a photo ... and never worry about rambling v. ranting .... we're all buddies on this thread, and whatever you want to write, WE want to read!!! (How's that for a deal!?)

I only went to the Fitness Center ONCE last week because I came down with an upper respiratory infection ... so I went back today for the first time since then. Whew... I'm pooped ... but I burned 400 calories on the bike and treadmill .... yay, me!!! My goal is to make it there 3 times per week.... at least until we get our own treadmill at home .... then I will still need to burn those calories, but I can do it in my pajamas.

(Oh, did I just admit that?!)

This thread is Hysterical. Molly you have been blessed with a great personality.

So here is my first post...first diet rant

I usually shop at COSTCO because I feed two growing boys and a hubby and meat is cheaper in bulk apparently.  Anyway, I decided to be a smarter shopper and bought stuff like skim milk and turkey bacon amongst other things.

So I finally pull the turkey bacon out just knowing that I am doing something good for my family (even though I know hubby will complain and oldest son will ask what's wrong with the bacon)  I happily cook my turkey bacon.  Then and only then do I bother to look at the nutritional value/ cals/ gms of fat.

Turkey bacon ain't all it's cracked up to be.  You're saving 5 calories......2 grams of fat and such a minimal amount of sodium you might as well have the real stuff.

That taught me not to just buy into the label (Even if it says South Beach on it....even though I'm not doing south beach)  This definitely taught me to READ READ READ.

#425 mollymouser Oct 09 2007 05:19

Awww, Mandy .... I figured that out with turkey bacon, too .... but at least I read the labels! The same CAN hold true for turkey ham and turkey pastrami .... and often you are just better off getting the "real thing."

The nice thing about REAL bacon is that is has such a wonderful taste ... and a little goes a long way. I bought some real bacon bacon bits and have been using a tablespoon here and there to jazz up scrambled eggs, sauteed mushrooms, and even acorn squash! And you can use less bacon if you make a turkey and bacon BLT .... rather than just bacon by itself. As a flavoring treat, you just can't beat bacon, can you? (happy sigh)

Why is it foods that I just love (like bacon) are just so high in fat and calories? Why couldn't I have been born with a HUGE love for .... lettuce?

Morning all!

Ok, my rant for the day is - why is wine SO high in calories and so bad for me?  Why is it IMPOSSIBLE to get something that tastes like wine but doesn't have all the pesky little calories and alcohol units?  I mean, surely someone could spend some time making alcohol-free wine drinkable - I'd buy it!

Caro
#427 krismasself Oct 09 2007 13:16

Actually, Caro, despite how it's rated on this website, a 4 oz glass of red wine is recommended daily by some nutritionists. The bioflavins in red wine are great for heart health and immunity. Problem is, at least for me, the wine opens my "apetite meter" and I tend to overeat when indulging.....sighs.....

My rant for today...why isn't food like a man....unavailable when you want it most? Why can't food be too tired, too busy, too distracted, etc???

#428 shrinking_caro Oct 09 2007 13:50
Yay, krissmasself, thanks for that!  My problem with wine is that once it's open it gets drunk, sigh.  And when it's just me, that's a lot of points (calories) and units...

As for your rant - that's too funny :-)

Laughing he he he - that just made me laugh out loud across the office!

krissmaself, Great question...why isn't food like a man? That was great!

dana, thanks for the thyroid support. I, too, didn't have cancer for which I am truly grateful. I'm glad you didn't either. About the DH and weight loss...my DH had a great six-pack even years after he stopped working out in Karate but lately, since he's passed the mid-50 mark, he's begun to get a little tummy. To my credit (I think!) I was actually sad to see it. He is now eating low-fat frozen yogurt, too, and told me not to buy Ben and Jerry's for him anymore! (So, be brave, there's a little justice!)

caro, I tried alcohol-free champagne once...and once was definitely more than enough! I love wine (and, yes, I'm totally jealous of dana's wine-tasting weekend!) but, like kris, one glass of wine seems to turn on my appetite. DH and I opened a bottle of wine Saturday evening and the next thing I know I'm standing in the kitchen scarfing corn chips while preparing dinner! They were organic, sea-salted, trans-fat free, blue corn chips (and yummy) but still loaded with calories and I have no idea how many I ate! Alas, wine is not my friend!

molly, good luck with the job interview. I hope work won't keep you from posting. Your posts so often make me laugh out loud and that's good for my blood pressure!

I LOVE dry red wines but in the last couple of years I just can't drink more than one lousy glass without having a headache the next day! I guess it should save me from being tempted to drink too much...or feed those munchies that follow...but, heck! It seems like even my vices are turning on me in my 'old age'!
#432 humorpam Oct 09 2007 15:43
Wait...Hold up...What did I just read?... I must have missed something before, but today I am seeing that Molly has a job interview. OK, Molly, give it up. Not the job, just the info. What job? What will you be doing? I'm happy for you if that is what you wnat. I pray that God gives you favor with the person doing the hiring. I just didn't know you had that coming up. I agree with stayonpiste, that I hope it doesn't take you away from posting and fellowshipping with us. We will miss you.
#433 mandango Oct 09 2007 15:52
Awwwww man!  Red wine.  I can stay away from the munchies with red wine.....but I can't stay away from the cigarettes.  Maybe if they could make an alchol free low cal wine and a nicotene free cigarette we'd all be happy.  I wonder if there is a legal herb that's good to smoke....hmmmm......
#434 krismasself Oct 09 2007 16:46

Mandy

I think we all have enough artificial stuff in our lives...who needs vice-less vices???

Helps me sometimes to remember not to give those substances any credibility, any false miracle-making abilities.

This hour's rant...clocks that go too slowly toward Lunch Time when my tummy is growling loudly!!

#435 cassie83 Oct 09 2007 17:06

I'll second the clock rant - those that go too slowly towards home time when I was ready to leave at least an hour ago.Frown

molly-  i totally know what you mean about the breakfast rut/routine.... ive been eating oatmeal w/ strawberries, blueberries and light soymilk everyday for a few weeks.  its so delicious!!!!  Before that it was the thomas' light multigrain english muffin toasted with 1 tbs peanut butter and a banana.  So yummy and easy it made my berkeley to san francisco commute bearable :)

p.s. ive also got into a driving home commute pear routine..lol.

Rena:)

#437 mollymouser Oct 09 2007 21:09

Renastar ... I didn't know you worked in SF!! How very cool. I lived in SF for three years when I was in law school, and I still miss "The City." We only live three hours away, but we rarely seem to get there. Our free time is usually spent going to Carmel/Monterey.  One of these days we'll definitely have to plan a California Calorie-Counters "meetup!"

Pam ... bless your heart, I don't have a job interview ... yet .... but I have applied for a seasonal position with the IRS (am I a glutton for punishment, or what?), and I need to go next Monday as part of the application process to get fingerprinted and to sign consent forms to be audited for the past 3 years.  The online application took me 3 hours to complete and consisted of over 60 questions  (some requiring me to write a paragraph in response) .... all for a seasonal job that requires a 4-year degree and pays just  $13 an hour!!!  I thought that I'd save all the money I earn to go into my "Need New Clothes Because I'm Losing Weight ... woo hoo ... Fund"  My husband is laughing because I won't go back to practicing law because it's just too stressful for me, so instead I'm looking at a calm, quiet job with the IRS swooping down and seizing money out of people's bank accounts and then dealing with irate, freaked out members of the public.

Well, I decided that I don't like going to the Fitness Center to walk on their treadmill, so we went last night and bought a nifty treadmill from Sports Authority (with a built-in fan!)  They are supposed to call in the next day or two to arrange to deliver it and get it set up ... we already have the perfect place selected for it in our second family room .... right next to the window overlooking the swimming pool and backyard bird feeders.... and right next to the stereo and some comfy denim couches.   I think having my own treadmill will just fit my lifestyle better than having to get dressed and go someplace to walk on the treadmill.

(And, no, I won't be nekkid on my treadmill ... I promised my DH I'd wear shoes and socks!!!!)

Tongue out

Oh no!  Watch your pocket books.  Molly is going to work for the IRS!  Maybe you can find a "eating better to lose weight nd be healthy as to not cost tax payers more money later on" deduction to supplement to cost of healthy eating.  Oh yeah and maybe a deduction for gym memberships, or home gym equipment (ie- treadmills). :)

I LOVE SF!  I haven't been in a couple of years, but always have so much fun when I go up there.  Carmel and Monterey are simply gorgeous.  Our great state is quite lovely isn't it?  Will the Califonia C-C meet up include us peeps from So Cal, or will it just be for the No Cal crew?  (No Cal.... ha ha)

BTW- speaking of no cal- Molly, where do you get the no calorie condiments you are always writing about?
