How long did you try (or how long have you been trying)? finnsal
  Apr 17 2008 20:19

I just scanned the "who here is pregnant" topic - and it looks like a lot of you!

I've read that the average is about six months, and that 80% of couples have concieved within 9 months of trying. This will be our third month trying. Just for fun, let's see if the averages hold true - for those who got preg while intentionally trying to concieve - how long did it take? Or for those lurking in here while trying (like me), how long have you been trying?

Congrats brianneo, what great news. I'm looking at the beautiful pictures of my brand new niece, just born yesterday. My brother wasn't trying, but he's excited. We've been trying since Jan 08 with no luck. No in my family knows we're trying. Happy for my brother. Wishing it was me, too.

Hello all,

Me and My husband have been trying for 1 month. We got married July 5 and have been trying since then. We already have a 5 yr old girl who we didnt even have to try for. She kind of just happend :) I was wondering if any one could give me some advice about when the best time of month is to concieve. I am new at this and I am getting very frusterated already. I know, I know, we just started trying but we have been going at it every day numerous times for a month and still nothing.  lol, I know some ladies would kill for that :)  Last month I was due for my period around the 6th of July it came 12 days late and was very heavy. So now I figure it will come around the 18th this month (if not preg.)  because it was so late last month. So when is the best time to concieve??

Help, need some advice!!

Thanks Brooke

brooke,

You might want to go buy some ovulation tests.

A textbook cycle has you ovulating 14 days after the first day of your last period.  In order to conceive, you would want to have sex right before/during/or right after ovulation.  Within 48 hours.

It sounds like your body might not be ovulating in that time frame.  Generally, your period will start about 14 days after you ovulate.  So, if your period starts late, it's probably because you ovulated late.

I could also recommend temping, but that will only indicate when you have already ovulated.  No good for timing sex until you have done it enough to recognize your body's patterns.  If you end up ttc for a few months, temping might be something to consider.

Ovulation tests are the easiest way.  You can generally buy them on the pregnancy test aisle.  Just follow the instructions.

I kept my menstrual history on mymonthlycycles.com for over a year before we even talked about trying. Initially I wanted to use it so I would get a reminder email the day before the site's tools projected I would start my period. It worked for me like clockwork and the ovulation warning email allowed me to be careful around my fertile days when we were sort of trying to prevent.

You could also pick up a basal thermometer and chart on a site like fertilityfriend, which uses you morning temperature to let you know when you're fertile and ovulating.

Good luck!

Juliemae2 and disease of ease,

Thank you for the advice. I will be buying a ovulation test :)

Just started really interacting on the site. This answer may be late, but I wanted to give some input. My husband and I had tried to conceive for two months and I got pregnant, but I miscarriaged at 7 1/2 weeks, but did not find out until I had the first sonogram when I was 2 months. We will be trying again, it has only been a little over a month since the miscarriage. Take your time and be patient, knowing the ovulation dates doesn't hurt. I use  the website called http://www.ovulation-calendar.net/   to see when my ovulation dates are to help me know if I am ovulating. It helped me in the past and maybe it can help you!

Good luck!!!!!!!

UPDATE:

Month 10.  still nothing.  found out I have follicles on my ovaries preventing me from ovulating.  Just got some medication to jump start my AF, as it has been 70 days since last one. Now we play the waiting game...hoping to start Clomid next month.

VERY frustrating and makes my heart sad to have to go through this.  I just wish it was easier.

wilkiea,

Are you seeing a reproductive endocrinologist?

After reading this, I think I need some advice.  I have been on the BCP for about 8 years.  My husband and I want to start trying for our first after Christmas.  Last time I was at the GYN, I asked if I should go off the pill to allow my body time to get it out of my system.  My doc advised me not to go off the pill until we are really ready to conceive because I had awful periods before I was on the pill.  The doc said that the pill is treating any underlying conditions that may have been causing the horrible cramps etc.

Does it really take that long to get birth control out of a person's system?  I don't want to go off of it until the last possible moment because I don't want to deal with those periods.  I'm terrified of them!  But, if it's going to cause my husband and I to not be able to conceive for months or years...then by all means, I better stop taking it!  I don't know what to do.  I read this entire thread and it sounds like people had very different experiences.  Could the pill not have anything to do with it?  Thanks in advance for any advice!

cass,

It's hard to say.  I know people who got pg the month they stopped taking the pills (or even if they were taking the pills, but were also taking antibiotics).  I also know people who's body's took a long time to regulate after getting off BCP.  I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say the pill has nothing to do with it.  It's just that each person reacts to medication in a slightly different way.  There's probably no way to know for sure how your body will react to coming off something it's been on for 8 years.

Good luck, though!

My wife was pregnant the first month after going off the pill on our 2nd child.  It really seems to be something that varies from woman to woman when it comes to getting pregnant.  We have friends who have tried for years with no luck.

My mother tried to have children for  7-8 years with no luck, then after the 1st she went on to have 5 children.  Really is a crazy thing.

i am not seeing one..do you recommend seeing one?  I guess i assumed that if my doctor couldn't handle it...she would send me to someone else.  Can I just go around her?  my DH wants to get tested...would they do that?

thanks for your comment..

We are older 39 1/2 and 41 years old and it took us a 1 1/2 to conceive our 3rd child.  Then again each of our kids are born every three years so it could be a cycle thing!  2003, 2006, and now 2009 :)

If you are comfortable with your current doc, that's -of course- your call.

An RE will generally do an array of tests before starting any treatment.  A semen analysis is one of the first things they will do, because it's non-invasive, relatively cheap and easy.  If that comes up normal, they will look at testing your hormone levels and sending you for a HSG to look at your tubes.  If your tubes aren't open, you aren't getting pregnant, so that's really important.

I went around my ob/gyn and sought help from a fertility specialist when I determined that my ob/gyn was not following protocol.  She had prescribed Clomid with no diagnostic testing and was not planning to monitor my folicle growth.  (All women have folicles, by the way.  When a folicle gets large enough, it generally releases an egg.  You problem isn't that you have follicles.  It's perhaps that you don't have enough or that they aren't growing large enough.)

Now, depending on your insurance, you may not be able to go around your regular doc.  You may need a referral.  I assume you already know whether or not insurance will be covering your diagnosis and/or treatment.

Don't be discouraged.  I know it's hard.  Just keep telling yourself that it will all have been worth it in the end.
