I would love to join this club! I just started calorie count and am a wannabe road racer from Portland Oregon. My bike is a Lemond Zurich and I ride only road.

If anyone has suggestions for losing weight while competing I would love to hear them!

Hey abaker1961, looks like we are in the same boat.  I am a runner recovering from a stress fracture as well,  and I want to run a 10K on June 9th, assuming the doctor will give me the ok.  I've been enjoying riding my bicycle in the mean time though.  By the way I'm in Central City Nebraska.

I'm in Idaho, land of sagebrush, potatoes, and sugar beets.  (Oh yeah, and republicans).

Dogs!  Today for the third time in my cycling career, a dog was hit by a car while chasing me.  It was a horrible feeling.  I could hear the car coming from behind.  I could see the dog running across the yard.  I could tell that they were going to arrive at the same place at the same.  I yelled for the dog to "Stop!" but he/she didn't listen.  I actually braced for the impact not knowing for sure if the driver would hit the dog or serve and hit me.  The car hit the dog but I was able to miss the dog as rolled in front of me.  The car didn't stop.  The dog got right back on it's feet and ran back around it's house.  I think it might be ok.  I happen to like that dog even though it chases it would never bite and I have been bitten by dogs before!  I have to blame the dog's owner for letting it run free even though they live in a rural area.

By the I'm in the rural southwestern Indiana town of Mt. Vernon.

Hi Bubba827, the stress fracture club is not much fun but it's a good opportunity to explore other forms of exercise. I think I'm going to stick with the cycling and do more cross training even after my running mileage is back up where I'd like it to be.  Are you past the magic six week mark? Hope you get to run the 10k!

Well gang I'm (as I said) slowly getting everyone listed on the roster. See the original post.  Check it out and see if I screwed it up and I'll correct it. I'll finish it (tomorrow probaly) have a ride tonite.

Gotta go, see ya DAN

tom, wow, i'm a huge 'dog-person' and that sort of encounter would totally traumatize me. it is the dog owner's responsibility to keep the dog safe; it's irresponsible of them to let the dog roam free like that. glad to hear he seemed to be Ok. dogs can be pretty tough, but what a scary thing.
#50 bubba827 May 17 2007 20:07
trhawley,  I have had a few run ins with two dogs in particular.  They are not really big dogs, but one of them is - or was - pretty aggressive.  The other day he was chasing me and nipping at my heels and I decided to give him a little kick in the head.  I know that sounds harsh, but I didn't want to get bit, and I didn't want him, or me to get hit by a car.  I didn't kick him very hard but it was enough to get my point across.  Now when I ride by he kind of sits under the owners truck and leaves me alone :)  What do you guys do about dogs?
#51 carrihound May 17 2007 20:30
yell at them usually. a good stern loud "NO!" usually startles them enough for me to sprint away. last time i encountered dogs, there was one chasing me, so i sprinted away only to find 2 more, meaner-looking ones, laying in wait about 100m up the road, so i had to keep sprinting!! my legs were noodley after that stretch!

i'm not a good role model though because sometimes i'll baby talk to them if they're cute/friendly-looking.

edit : i find the dogs are usually more interested in chasing than actually biting, so i tend to not have much fear. and mine have always come on deserted roads without a car for miles so i've never had to worry about them (or me) getting hit by a car.
#52 leinad May 17 2007 21:16
I haven't found anything so far that works with dogs in all occurances.  I just keep a watch and hope for the best.  My biggest fear is what you said about them swerving to miss the dog and getting me instead. DAN

I'm thinking of getting some kind of pepper spray stuff that's made for dogs in the rare event one might come after me.   I have seen some pretty big mosterous dogs too... some look big but friendly... some have that "wow that calf muscle looks tasty" look in their eye.   Last thing I want is to get bit while trying to burn some calories and get some miles in.   Expecially when riding alone.

Just a little over an hour to go before I head home and get the bike, fill my water bottles (1 with water, 1 with gatoraid) and get down to the bike trail to meet my co-worker.   I'm thinking I may just ride down to the trail and save the gas as well as loading/unloading of the bike.  I still have to get a bike rack... though my car holds all but the front wheel of my bike in the trunk with the lid mostly closed... I know I can't keep on doing that forever.

Maybe I'll get my wife to take a digital pic of me on the bike before I head out so I can post it on my profile tomorrow.

EDIT:

Dang, my co-worker jsut came by and said he wasn't feeling good.  That he felt fine this morning but after lunch he just started feeling bad.   Now I have to decide to ride today on my own... or wait till next week and just hit the gym today (or something else).

nightc1 : just do it!!

Long Story Not Made Short : i had an interesting encounter on my commute a few weeks back that 'll share with the group.

in the last leg of my ride, i'm on a 4-lane road with a bike lane. on this morning, as i'm coming up the last hill, a big gas-delivery truck (not an 18-wheeler, the dumptruck-sized kind that carry big canisters of compressed gas in the back) came by me in the nearest lane, and veered into the bike lane nearly on top of me. i watched, dumbfounded, as he crossed the white line into my lane right next to my front wheel. i slowed and he kept coming over until he'd consumed about 3/4 of the bike lane. heart racing, i slowed more & shook it off, thankful to have avoided a very close call with a very huge truck.

as i neared work, there's a gas company across the street, so i looked into their driveway and sure thing, the truck was parked in there for unloading (i recognized it because one of its yellow lights was not working). feeling like i should say something, i rode to the fence and waved over the first guy i saw. he walked up and i told him, with much candor, that that truck had very nearly run me over about a mile back. the man turned out to be the driver and so a conversation ensued. our different perspectives on what had occurred surprised us both.

i already related my take on the experience. his side : he had seen me clearly, and he'd tried to give me a wider berth, but there was traffic in the second lane prohibiting him from crossing the line into the other lane as he passed. he squeezed what space he could from his lane, and then once he thought he was by me, he had eased back to the right hand side, so as not to be so close to the other lane of cars. in doing so, he saw that he'd gone into the bike lane, but he felt it was OK at that point since he'd already passed me.

what is interesting is that i know he was being honest & i completely believe he was trying to steer clear of me, yet still it was a close call for me. what he didn't understand, and what i proceeded to describe to him, is that when vehicles (especially very large vehicles like trucks & buses) pass a cyclist, the vehicle is surrounded by a pocket of air that sucks the cyclist along with the vehicle at a greater speed than the cyclist was initially traveling. so when he made the mental assessment that he was past me, he had not accounted for this drag effect pulling me along with him, and therefore thought he was by me when in fact i was still well within his profile.  ideally his mirrors would tell him where i'm at, but proper mirror placement is tricky business & no one should ever fully trust them when it comes to narrow vehicles like bikes & motorcycles.

it occurred to me that most motorists, not being cyclists or aerodynamics engineers, don't understand this drag effect and probably wouldn't account for it when they do the calculus of passing cyclists. a woman here was killed when a trailer, pulled behind a pickup, came over into the shoulder and hit her. i think the driver probably thought he'd passed her safely, when in fact he clipped her wheel and sent her into oncoming traffic (where she was killed by a silver mercedes that followed the trailer, the sub-human degenerate driver of which was never caught. but i digress...)

back to my truck driver.... he was very friendly, open-minded & asked if i wanted to discuss it with his supervisor, which i declined, and he said,"You really educated me on something today." and i told him that i was glad to hear the he'd seen me and i appreciated that he was making an effort to make the roads more bike friendly.  hardly the hostile road-rage encounter it could have been & we both learned something valuable from our conversation.

Ha@carrihound... long story short... yeah.   I'm not picking though... I'm just as bad.

Well I did the ride.  I went 15miles and averaged 15mph... for a nice round trip of.. yeah.. an hour.   Overall it was a good ride... top speed was 22+mph.   I'm wondering if my pace is going to be helped or hurt riding with someone... guess I'll find out next week.

Carrie, Tom tough days on the trail.  I would like to say more but I have to keep it short.  I will say that most of the drivers I encounter are somewhere between reasonably courteous and downright generous.  There are more than a few that feel it is okay to squeeze by anyway they can and some are worse.

I'm Joe. (JC from Cheverly in Dan's list).  I used to commute with my daughter in a seat on the rack on my back wheel.  That was 25 years ago.  I started back a year or so ago and almost immediately had to replace my old Ross Grand Tour with a Jamis Aurora (pic posted, if you are interested).  Last Summer, I set a goal of my first century.  I came close but could't quite get there.  Last November, I bought a real road bike, a Jamis Quest, I will get a pic posted soon.  I expect to ride a century or two this Summer plus I have some multi-day tours planned and I expect to be commuting about 3 days a week.  Right now my goal is 2000 miles by Labor Day.

Good Luck.

carri, glad to hear the story come out on the good side, I have wished for the longest that someone would do a group of public service stories on bike and pedistrian safety on TV.

I could fill this space with stories of knowledgeless (is that a word) drivers.  Had a truck do the same to me just last month. Once had a driver pull up next to me and tell me it was illegal to ride in the road, told him to go read the Ohio vehicle code.  Even had a cop try that once and told him that I was by law a vehicle and was entiled to my share of the lane and he drove off.  I think he was just trying to intimadate me.

The uneducated are bad, but the ones who think we are holding them up are the worst.  On the TOSRV ride there was a guy in a pick-up who was driving in the wrong lane (coming at cyclists to run them off the road).

I guess you just have to be aware of what's going on and be careful. DAN

good morning!

Don't have a lot of time to post but I saw this group and immediately wanted to join!

I live in NE Ohio and I really enjoy biking! I have a Specialized Hardrock Sport for my mountain biking and a Specialized Globe Sport for my commuter bike. I ride to work (try for every day unless it's in the low 40's or raining) and it's about 8.5 miles to work, maybe 9 miles home. I really, really love doing it and it feels awesome!

I actually haven't ridden in 3 days b/c it's been rainy and chilly but it's supposed to get to 60 this afternoon and I'm planning to go on about a 15 mile ride after work.

Glad to see all of the enthusiasts here! I'll check in every now and again!

-Stacey

anyone following the Landis hearings? it makes me sad that there's so much dishonesty & nastiness in the pro ranks of a sport that can be incredibly beautiful & rewarding in its pure, clean form. such a shame.

speaking of good clean pure cycling : bike to work day is today!! i rode in (even though i should have taken a day off of the saddle in anticipation of my longest ride ever tomorrow) and i saw more riders than ever on the streets of austin this morning. very exciting!! i know we had some CCCC folks try it out, so how'd it go? looking forward to the ride home? let's hear how our new commuters did :-)

oh, despite dan's confidence in my 'skilz' (thanks dan!), i confess only to having some experience and many opinions that i'm happy to share. each can decide for herself or himself whether i know what i'm talking about or not!!
