Great thread. What I find very useful is to try and make little allowances in my head for where the calories will go. For example, I know that I am a mean snacker and I don't like going for 5 hours without any food at all, so I try to keep my meal allowance at 300-400-500 for breakfast, dinner and tea. That way I get to 1200 and it leaves me enough for 3 snacks or compensating a rather large dinner. It works differently for everyone though. I know my boyfriend doesn't tend to snack at all and instead eats bigger meals. Whatever works best for you is your ideal way of doing it, rather than some Atkins or South Beach nonsense. Water helps put you through hungry zones or those of cravings. Trust yourself. I've just gone through a 4 week plateau, it would appear. Know that as long as the formula of calories in vs calories out works out the right way (deficit of 500-1000), you are fine and it will shift eventually. |

I have heard that eating small portions actually helps metabolism because its always on. Can anyone confirm this or have any opinions on that study? little clip I found("fair play"): If you want to lose fat, develop muscle mass, and improve insulin sensitivity, you want to eat many small meals (5-6) throughout the day. Forget about the old 3 meals a day routine. Eat more meals, at the right times, and with the right foods. warning cuz im not sure if you can post offsite links guess ill find out, link to 3rd party website any information exchanged is not the responsibility of anyone but yourself. source |

Why has spirulina powder been called a superfood? (info from the net not my own) Spirulina the superfood Spirulina is green/blue algae that are one of the many organisms that give the green color to stagnant ponds. Producers are careful to propagate only the pure strains of it. It is grown in large basins. The first thought might be to shun it, but actually, it is an excellent food and has the highest concentration of nutrients known, including having 60% protein content. Spirulina and its relative, Chlorella, were introduced to the market in the 1970?s. In the fall of 1981, an advertising campaign created a huge market and many suppliers entered the market. Benefits of spirulina Since then, the benefits of spirulina in the diet have expanded greatly and it is one of the most beneficial of all dietary supplements known. At 60 to 70% protein, it is higher in protein than any other natural food. Spirulina is rich in vitamins and minerals and other nutrients. Because of spirulina powder's extremely high concentration of nutrients, it is very satisfying, leaving one with little desire to continue eating after having some spirulina. Health benefits of spirulina Ingesting only 2 grams of spirulina, daily, effectively reduces the level of interleukin-4 in the body, thereby greatly reducing allergy symptoms. Spirulina also inhibits production of viruses. Where to get spirulina Spirulina available in health food stores and it is relatively inexpensive, costing about US$5 for 100 tablets, making it one of the best foods that you can use for your health. Also from Holland and Barret as a protein powder. it comes in Strawberry falvour and tastes realy good. |

protein is used to build and repar cells and is provded by foods like pulses and nuts. Too litte protein can cause loss of lean tissue, which leads to tirdness then depression. EXTRACT FROM Qulified Nutrtionest (soz about spelling) recommened protein intake, is that it reprecents 10% of the bodies daily intake example a person that consumes 2,400 cas a day needs 240 cals of protein. ONE gram of protein is 4 cals S0 thats 60g a day...u need to work ur own out 4 ur cal intake ME: ten percent of 1, 600 is 160 cals of protein.. So mine is 40g.. so Nymo is eating lots more than is rec, but the rec still seems low to me |

I have two that have helped me alot.
#1 - Chew sugarless gum as you prepare your food because it will help you from snacking as you do so and the second reason to chew gum is also the #2 topic that helps me out and that is to brush your teeth before you eat. First of all between chewing gum or brushing your teeth, we don't want to eat mint with high calorie or fat content foods and secondly, you're also taking care of your teeth and gums at the same time. I end up brushing my teeth maybe 3-4 sometimes five times a day! |

"I eat my lovely, scrumpous, carbolious breakfast cereal too damn quick and want seconds!"
ME TOO!! my tip? HEAT IT IN THE MICROWAVE FOR A MINITE..no matter what it is, Cinammon grahams, musli..oats.. anything!! pop it in there so the milk gets warm too (or not, if you prefure) the savour that nice, comforting warm meal! i love doing this with plain corn flakes, it makes a 5 minite brekki become anything up to 30 mins if you eat it slow enough! and it will pep up digestion! |

Hi, I'm pretty new to the site, but this is what I've learned...
I don't eat nearly enough protein and don't like fish, eggs, or most dairy, so my trick is to hide the protein. · When I make turkey burgers I mix egg whites into the turkey before cooking. · When making French toast, use egg whites and chocolate flavored protein powder (healthy chocolate French toast, yum!). · Buy yogurt that tastes like something you crave. My favorites are Yoplait light Apple Turn-over (for sweet tooth) and Key Lime (doesn't taste like a dairy product). I look forward to taking my vitamins everyday because I use the Viactiv Chocolate multi-vitamin chews. I get a little piece of chocolate everyday and take my vitamins at the same time, win-win. Eating healthy saves money you would otherwise be spending on fast food (water is free; a large soda is 2 bucks!). When grocery shopping most of the food you want is around the perimeter. You don't need to walk down most isles (unless you want the exercise). Mentally the things I've learned: · If the scale goes up, you probably gained muscle. · If the scale goes down, you lost fat, YAY! · The grown up side of your brain needs to control the little kid side of your brain that wants the 5 pieces of cake even though your stomach will be well stuffed after 1. I wasn't even aware I had a grown up side to my brain until recently :( |

adding onto above, its 0.4g protein per pound of body weight for protein (man and women, no matter of physical activty) to much protein (over 100g a day) can cause organ damage with little or no sign of illness. can be fatal as it can overload your system. |

Eating 5-6 small HEALTHY meals a day, walking and strength training add up to a well balanced diet and body.
EVERYTHING TAKES TIME- to notice the changes, others to notice changes, muscle building, getting into a habit, planning your meals, realizing this is not only a way of eating but a way of life. |

royal jelly honey
try and get honey that contains 'royal jelly' the queen bee is fed exclusivly on this and lives much longer than any other bee. It also contains tons of amino acids and minerals.. much more than just honey alone. It can be found in most super markets. Aim for honey with at least 2% or more royal jelly inside it. Or, if you like - take royal jelly in tablet form. From any good health store |

A good sublingual liquid B-12 vitamin helps regulate the metabolism and gives you a boost of energy, natural energy, not the jittery I drank 3 pots of coffee feeling that things like caffeine and such give you. B-12 also has other health benefits as well. A little cinnamon sprinkled on your food and in your morning coffee helps to regulate the blood sugar naturally and keeps you from having the spikes and crashes (for those of us hypoglycemic it is wonderful!) It also tastes yummy Get movement in, even if you don't have time in the day to devote a full half hour or hour to exercise itself there are things you can do to move more and therefor increase your metabolism. One of my tricks, when watching a favorite show I jog or lift dumbells or do pilates moves during the commercials. When you brush your teeth you can do squats or plies, don't just stand idle move... every few seconds/minutes of extra movement adds up and it also gives you more energy. eliminate self-loathing and berating behaviors. I got rid of my little critical voice by envisioning it as a little monster.. in my case it looked like one of those little spiky ball critters and you can envision yourself picking it up and giving it a hug or loving it to death whatever... but work on the negative self talk. The visualization is kind of goofy lol, but it makes you more aware of when you are engaging in the self-sabotaging behavior therefor allowing you to take control of it. I also believe that our thoughts are made of energy and that energy tends to manifest. What we believe is a self-fulfilling prophecy so if your negative voice is always sabotaging you.. well... you get the idea. Counter negative with positive. |

I lose more and feel more efficient during the day if breakfast is my biggest meal, lunch smaller, dinner smaller still. Snacks, of course, are welcome, and usually consist of hummus and veggies (great way to sneak in some more protein), fruit, or sugar-free yogurt. Han (or anyone else who can answer!), quick question-- I thought that spirulina looked like a wonderful way to get some more nutrients. Do you have any brands/retail outlets that you've had a good experience with? Thank you! |
