| How much does a fart weigh? | ||
| Jul 25 2008 13:33 | ||
Last night I was experimenting with the scale a little(I posted about it in the motivation forum...running in the rain thread) and when I first stepped on the scale it read 168.6 That was expected because I was still wearing water logged clothes from running in the rain. To double check(my husband and I were betting, so I had to be sure!) I weighed myself again....166.4!!!! The only thing that happened between the first and second weighin was a big fart! Can a fart really weigh 2.2 lbs or is my scale just very innacurate? Has anyone else weighed a fart before? Haha...I can't wait to see responses... |

I noticed doing my water aerobics in the deep end that when I take a deep breath I floated higher. I wonder if it would be the same for holding in gas? |

Whew-wee! Somebody light a match in here! |

Now who doesn't enjoy the thrill of a good, moist, thunderclap that was *holds up fingers* this close to an accident. Proud of 'making a difference' I am |

Original Post by kallie67: I do that when sneezing. I hate sneezing in class or in meetings...try to hold it in...then make a ridiculous, loud sound when it does come out! |

Kim, it just might!!! Try it and let us know!
Not a moist one, no Frothy. Those worry me! I did that with a sneeze the other day and I think the pressure build up made things worse. Covering my nose and mouth once I finally did sneeze was...a bad idea. Projectile sneezing. EEW! |

I can see Frothy as one of those "pull my finger" kind of Dads. |

"Pull my finger" reminds me of "Children of Men" now... such a sad scene that was. |

| Yep!!! I think most dads play that game. Funny thing is, once the kids know the whole "pull my finger" scenario, still they do it! | ||

| "Chidlren of Men" was good, but yep, that scene (along with some others) was so sad. | ||

I noticed doing my water aerobics in the deep end that when I take a deep breath I floated higher. I wonder if it would be the same for holding in gas? When you take deep breath, the volume takin up by your body increases, through the mass contained will increase, albeit very slightly. So your average density goes down. This increases the effect of the bouyent force (which is equal to the mass of water that's displaced by your body--displace more water, greater bouyent force). The same works in air, only the bouyant force is much less because the density of air is so much less than water. And since the density of the air you displace is the same as the air you breath, the effects cancel out. However, with other gases the effect can be noticible, as in a helium balloon for instance. Damn...thanks for doing the leg work! I guess it's time for a new scale! Haha, thanks, I actually have fun doing this type of stuff if you can beleive it. And I didn't even take into account the effect the bouyant forces involved, got lazy I guess ;) Though the density of a fart is probably pretty close to air, hard to say without actually going through the calculation, but maybe just a little less |

| It is easy to trick rebeccalilybeast to pull my finger now, because she hasn't figured the connection out yet. | ||

Oh, hmking! Thank you so much for this post! I think I burned 200 calories just from laughing! I've actually wondered about this myself! Now you have me wanting to pass gas just so I can experiment myself! LOL If it's true, then I'm going to start eating more turnips and other gassy foods! Heavn help those people who work next to me. Still chuckling. Thanks.

| I can see the headlines now: "Group of on-line dieters blamed for methane increases in atmosphere" or "On-line diet experiment increases greenhouse effect!" | ||

After laughing while reading this wonderfully hilarious thread I was reminded of a line from my childhood... i can't remember were it came from maybe saturday night live.... are there gaseous clouds around Uranus.... we used to ask the high school science teacher that all of the time once we had a substitute that actually looked it up before realizing we were all just a bunch of smart asses.... |
