Mission: Run Around the World--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

We're on a mission to Run Around the World!

Please visit the previous incarnation of our thread here: http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/484 66.html.

Our wonderful leader Zarelha started one of the greatest motivators ever here on C-C: a mission to run around the world, one run, one runner at a time! All running mileage is acceptable (no ellipticals or swimming) and anyone is welcome to join at any time!

Some info about us:

We started the run at the Southernmost tip of South America, in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. We will end the run in Capetown, South Africa, at the ocean. The total mileage needed to finish is 23,854 miles.

Start date of the run: August 1, 2007, 12:00 midnight.

Weeks start on Wednesday and end on Tuesday. Runners who have had no movement in a full month were put on Hiatus, however, we want you back! Post more mileage at any time!

Our Tally Team will each take one week to be responsible for tallying up that week's mileage. Post here or PM the RATW user profile if you have any questions or concerns.

For detailed mileage, please visit our spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/new_cc_worldrunn er/Runners_Log

Congrats on your great performance in this weekend's half marathon, jenka. Great to hear that you were feeling good the day after the race.

Glad to hear that you're getting back into the swing of things, jfk61.

I hope things go well for you with your National Guard training, bat_2721. It's fine with us if you need to post a two-week total when you get back.

Have a good time at the shooting sports camp, kscout.

Glad to hear that you're feeling better, skinny_kitty.

Welcome to the group, jt1226.

Minie13-good luck with your outdoor run. I was a little nervous when I transitioned from treadmill running to outdoor runs. I had built myself up to a 10 mile long run on the treadmill before switching, so I didn't know how my body would react. Just take it a little slower the first few times outside, and you should be fine.

Thanks for reporting your miles, energygirl, aezell1, abaker1961, tatjanaturtle, melxcloud.

No more running for me for the current "week" (ending today). The area around my scraped knee is still looking pretty ugly. Even worse is that I feel some discomfort in that region surrounding my knee every time my left foot hits the ground (only when I run, not when I walk). I could try to get a run in today, but with my big race coming up on Saturday, I'd rather rest it at least one more day before trying to run again.

I want to try a 7 mile rehearsal run tomorrow, where I try to mimic everything that I'll encounter on Saturday--same clothes, shoes, same course, with a gradual warm up, followed by 2-3 miles at goal race pace, and finishing with a cooldown for the remainder of the distance. So perhaps another day off today will be what will help my knee.

OK, enough of my rambling. Let's keep running out there!!

Good luck minie13! Have you used MyMyRun to search for routes by zip code?  I've done that with good success for finding routes over trails rather than having to run on pavement (which my shins object to doing!)  Let us know how it turns out  for you!

Log two miles for me for today.  If I did my math correctly this time (didn't leave any days out!), I should have 11.15 miles for the week.

minie13-  you'll do fine!  I  have run most of my miles this winter on the treadmill.  I usually put it on a 1% incline to better simulate a road surface.  When I do run outside, I don't notice myself tiring more easily - it's just so nice to actually have some scenery to look at!  I am so hoping for some decent weather this Sunday as my long run time increases to 2 hours and 15 minutes - and that much time on a treadmill is a loooong time.  My mp3 player gets me through, as does following my nutrition plan with getting in the gels, electrolyte tablets, and water at specific points in my running.  I'll have to run outside tomorrow and Friday, so I'll just have to suck it up and deal with it if it's cold and dreary.

skinny_kitty- No pressure!  I have a time goal, but my main goals are the same as yours - to finish and not finish last!  All we can do is the best we can do.  We'll both have PRs - let's focus on having fun and enjoying the run!

I'll catch up with you all after camp.  Time to get packing!
this ends my first week. I did 4.5 miles total! see you all next week.
As much as I kept telling myself I was tired, it was too cold outside, I didn't really feel like it - I got out there and did it during my lunch break!! Woo hoo!

3.77 miles =)
4 miles today for me ;-)

Thank you.
I did it!  BUt man I forgot how hard running against wind can be.  My first half mile was pretty rough but after that I was ok.  My calves ar epretty tight right now no matter how much I stretch, but I expected that.  All in all I got my comfidence back about running outside and feel great!

I ran 5.5 today, so I think my total for the week is 41.5 but double check that for me : )

Edit: I forgot to say thanks to everyone for th support.  You guys are seriously the best!

4.25 miles for me from Monday night.

2.15 miles from me from tonight.

Man, I have a lot of threads to catch up on before heading away this weekend!!

please add 5.2 for me tonight thanks!!

3.25 miles for last week. Thanks for all the fond wishes last week for my little one.  She is finally better and life has returned to normal.

wrm2015: Good idea taking the extra rest for your knee.  You will have a great race!  I am looking forward to reading about it.

minie13: Once you get used to road running you will not want to go back to the treadmill.  You will be running in the snow next winter :)

I am committed to training for my first half marathon.  March was pretty much a washout for the second half.  I anticipate adding mileage in the coming weeks.  I never thought running could be fun.  Thanks to all for the inspiration.

RATW: 25 miles for the week of March 26th - April 2nd.

Morning, all!

Welcome to all the new people! It's so fantastic that people are joining us!

Minie, glad your outdoor run went so well! You planned on 3 miles and ran 5, so something must have gone right. The best part about running outside is that you can slow down when you need to and speed up when you need to, without having to punch buttons. This is especially helpful on long runs when you may need some extended slower parts. These days I do half my runs on the treadmill and the other half outside.

Skinny_kitty, trust me, you will not be last. There's ALWAYS someone slower than you, no matter how slow you run. I always think I'm the slowest runner and then when I run races I end up passing people, which is a great feeling. You will do great!

Wrm2105, hmm, knee pain is always worrisome.  It might be a good idea to take more than a day off, to tell you the truth. I always run longer distances better after a couple days off.  Then again, I've never run longer than about 15 miles, so I have no idea if 50K would be different.  Take care of yourself!  And run like the WIND.

Thanks for all the congrats on my half, it truly was one of the best runs I've ever had. My friends cheering me on at mile 13 said I looked like I was out for a Sunday jog! I've been taking it easy since then and only doing a few miles on the treadmill at zero incline, and am still feeling excellent. Who needs a day off? Not ME! Heh.

I did 30 miles this past week. Thanks!

4.3 miles for me this week.

My second week of running, and yesterday for the first time I felt myself really "running" for the second half, rather than slogging along one foot at a time.  There's hope for the old bones yet:-)   I found a great technique on runner's world for taping my achilles, although I think it took me longer to get out of the tape than it had for me to do the whole run!

Congrats to race runners - sounds like you all did great things last weekend, and good luck to everyone tending wounds and working on healing - I know how frustrating that can be.

wiliwigi and jenka - I totally agree that outside running is way better.  teh problem is I WILL NOT run outside when its cold.  I seriously can't stand the cold.  So every spring I go through this transition.  The difference this year is that I'm signed up for races so I was way more nervous.

Week end 4/1:

week total: 9.2 miles
