I'm a dieting veteran.... up and down the same 20lbs since highschool! I've always lost it on Weight Watchers...but I wanted to try something new. So, here I am. I'm looking to start a group of late 20- early 30 year olds who are interested in losing weight and getting healthy. I'm 5' 9" 160lbs. I'm looking for others that have about 20-30lbs to lose. Hopefully there's some people out there!!
Happy New Year!
Congratulations! Foxy, glad to hear you're on track (everyone seems to suggest it's easier in California!) and VP that is SOOO awesome that you're basically at goal!
The sedentary job thing is really a bummer - you're devoting most of your waking hours to working or getting to/from work. Yuck. Do you get a long lunch hour? If it were me, joining a gym at work would be easiest as I just wouldn't have the energy to leave my house after getting home after such a long day.
No long lunch hour - we basically continue to work while we're eating. I've started getting on the bus 1 stop later and getting off 1 stop earlier in addition to taking the stairs. My sister suggested I join the gym and go Saturday and Sunday instead of during the week - I'm trying to find one I like and has a reasonable rate. DH said that he might be interested in going with me - so we could use some of that time to be together, too.
We'll see. How is everyone else doing? It's been very quiet on the boards lately..I guess summer schedules have been keeping people away. Hope things are good!
I've been working out more. No change on the scale but my arms are more toned.
I have a big event on Saturday that I was hoping to have lost some weight for. Maybe 1-2lbs by the end of the week, get my stomach down at least? I'm staying away from all refined sugar and all fried foods until then, trying to drink way more water and eat more whole grains.
VP, sounds like a great schedule. I find that it's the little things, like getting off the bus a stop earlier, that really make a difference. I mean, an hour at the gym may burn a few hundred calories, but choosing to stay mobile, that is a healthy life change.
And VG (vegetariangeek), I think I'm going to join you on your clean-eating challenge.
I've been "bored eating" way too much lately. It seems like whenever I make progress I immediately start eating like crazy. It almost feels like my subconscious is fighting for my fat cells. Crazy, I know.
I started Bikram Yoga yesterday (hot yoga). I almost passed out three times. Totally crazy. If you like intensity try it. :) The workout isn't that hard, but with the heat my every pore felt so cleansed.
Good luck, vpireiner! It does sound frustrating when work is so intense and commutes are soooo long. Those few minutes of extra walking should be helpful. I find stuff like that just energizes me for the workday too. And even if your lunch is eaten at your desk, it really is worthwhile to take even ten minutes as a break for a brisk walk and some fresh air - escape from your desk. Sometimes it helps just to make an excuse - I'm going down to grab a pack of gum from the convenience store - and go fast. It gets your blood flowing, probably improves your metabolism a bit.
Foxy, thanks so much for joining me!! This will be more fun! I did just have a bowl of cereal that probably had quite a few preservatives, but that's IT for the next week at least. I've been drinking lots and lots of water and I am going to go wash some of the organic cherries I just bought for a snack.
Did you really like hot yoga? I found it had the pore-cleansing benefits of a sauna/steam room, but was not a good workout at all.
It's good to hear from you guys again! Thanks for the support. I can really use it right now.
Best of luck on the "clean" eating! I am hit and miss on that.
Enjoy the yoga! I've not tried that - especially not in the heat!
I'm trying to do a little something in the evenings workout wise - thinking that I could move while I'm watching TV - so it give me the news at night and a little exercise. We'll see!
Have a great 4th!
Brilliant workout idea! You could do situps during the news (they're quiet) and run/jump/skip during the commercials.
I've been "hit or miss" on the clean eating just the past few days - was great day 1 and 2, then had some ketchup, then ha d some greasy bad nachos, but I'm back on the bandwagon today!
Dbl post!
How's everyone doing? VP did you manage to get any exercise in? Foxy, did you try the clean eating? I was OK for a couple of days, then got sidetracked (big party on Saturday night where I think drinking led me to justify extra dessert and hangover-soothing potato chips on Sunday). Yesterday I was low on groceries and ... well, did my best with limited supplies but hit the vending machine at work :( Felt gross afterwards though which is inspiring me to be good today!
I am kind of pi$$ed at myself though, I brought my gym clothes to work ... but forgot my running shoes (not allowed in the gym without them). I am wearing comfy walking shoes in the office though and I think I'll go for a brisk walk at lunch.
Hah! Clean eating...I have been very bad lately and I feel horrible!
I guess there's no time like the present though. I'm on it. I'm doing the July challenge, and have to get my ass in gear.
VG, I hate it when I forget my equipment, it's hard enough just to mentally prepare, right? How was the event? Did you lose the lb?
VP, how are you doing?
I love to hear that "no time like the present"! Exactly! I am eating my grapes for snack and I am going to go deliver a document to a co-worker two flights up in a minute. What's the July challenge?
The party was great. I didn't check my weight before it, but I think my dress looked good, so who cares about the # on the scale? Well, I do ... yesterday the # was actually up 0.4lbs, probably due to my not-so-healthy weekend (although, I did dance quite a bit at the party, burned a few calories!)
Every month in the Games & Challenges forum they start a monthly challenge where you pick your goal weight for that month and weigh in every week. The person who started the thread keeps track and posts everyone's progress. It's nice because you see people succeeding and failing.
NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT ! I made a veggie soup and am trying to fill up on fruits and veggies and eat small portions of the other stuff, instead of the other way around. It's easy as long as I have plenty of yummy, easy-access stuff around.
Definitely no time like the present! As my sister always reminds me...every little bit helps - might as well start today!
I'm glad it is Friday...It means that I turn in my grant application to my boss to review - so I won't have that over my head this weekend.
To prepare for the Dirty 30 party in DC, I am going to go shopping this afternoon/evening and Saturday - DH owes me for last weekend with his parents. I'm also planning on doing some cooking this weekend so I can get back on track with eating better.
OH, I got weighed at the girl dr's office yesterday, and found
out that I hadn't lost anymore weight from April 30th to
yesterday...but I hadn't gained any either!!! Whoo Hoo!!!
So I can pick up where I left off. I am REALLY excited about that! I
was really figuring that I'd be up closer to 140...but nope!
132.5!!!!! (WITH JEANS ON!!! I usually weighed with my gym clothes
and sneakers on...who wants to stand naked in the gym locker room to
weigh, right?!) And, that was without watching what I ate, really - I
kinda figure that my lifestyle change has sunk in a bit...the things I
changed, including portion size, have become habit or routine! Now I
just need to go back to more veggies/fruits...which will be easy with
all the fresh stuff available and the farmer's markets...and back to
the gym/exercise routine.
I am P-U-M-P-E-D today - what a great feeling. I hope I can make it last! Maybe you guys can feed off my energy...that's what these forums/boards are for, right - sharing success and support! Keep it up ladies and have a GREAT weekend!
Dirty 30 party? That sounds like fun! Let us know what you're going to wear!
That is sooo exciting to be closer to 130 than 140. Great news! And great to feel like you have a nice free weekend to be unstressed and healthy and able to cook yourself some good food.
I am also pumped because I am down 0.4 from last week. I'm hoping to have a nice ACTIVE weekend.
Thanks vege! I'm REALLY excited about the trip to DC. I bought a great top from Express (there is a link to a pic on my journal entry for today) and a pair of dark wash jeans from Kohl's. (I got a pair of Express jeans - very comfy, but the Kohl's ones make me look thinner.) I'm going to wear these kinda metallic ivory/cream platform stiletto hand-me-downs. My sister gave me some hair and makeup tips, so I should be "smoking"!
I did manage to cook a little this weekend - made some tuna macaroni salad for lunches this week, and did a pork tenderloin with green beans and roasted potatoes for Sunday supper. Been doing better about the junk food, but I did buy some blue bunny no sugar added reduced fat turtle tracks ice cream (YUMMY!) For some reason I've been craving chocolate and sweets...not ttom, who knows?! :)
Stay active and eat healthy!
Hi ladies! Your positive energy is infectious. ![]()
Scale hasn't budged for me, but that's not such a bad thing. I started a gym membership and that should help keep me active.
Question: I've been eating FiberOne yogurt and Kashi GoLean Crunch Cereal. Do you think they're too processed? I think I feel like they are, and I should return to oatmeal & fruit, but the FiberOne and Kashi are so high in Fiber and Protein that it's hard not to eat it.
Hi ningyo45! This is a great board! It's been a bit quiet lately, but we're all lurking around somewhere waiting to offer support, etc. to anyone who needs it. Welcome!
Congrats on the gym membership, foxy! I hope you enjoy it...I really liked the "me" time I got while I was there - and 9 times out of 10, I felt better when I went home. No idea about your question - I'd say what ever makes you feel the best. Kashi prides itself on being natural (although I've not had their cereal), so I have a hard time thinking about it being bad for you.
Have a great and active weekend!!!

Hi ningyo45, welcome!
Let us know how the SB diet goes. It's a low-carb thing right?? They usually show results pretty quickly, but maintaining may be difficult. You can always come here for support!
Have a great weekend everyone, and keep cooking at home! (Mmmmm tuna macaroni salad......)
Hi everyone, and welcome Ningyo! This can be kind of a quiet thread, but it's one of my favourites - nice supportive group. I also "suddenly" gained about 10lbs between the ages of 24 and 26 and it's surprisingly harder to lose it now than it was 5 years ago. Stupid metabolism. I feel like in my 20s I'm supposed to be in the best shape of my life and I am TRYING to get there.
Foxy, good for you for getting into the gym! How's it going so far? I'm not sure about your Fibre One yogurt, but I think the Kashi cereal is pretty good. I've tried it and usually when I eat over-processed foods my stomach tells me about it - the Kashi was fine though.
VP the top is beautiful! Did you get that colour? The whole outfit and makeup plan sounds fantastic. Hope your weekend was everythign you hoped for.
I've been at a conference the past few days where all the food was provided. I had expected that there would be a grocery store nearby where I could go nab some fruit and nuts, but it was in a sort of remote area :( The breakfasts were good, fruit and oatmeal, but the veggie options at lunch always seemed to be cheese sandwiches on white bread and dinner was pasta in cream sauce, veggies dripping in butter, etc. I stayed away from the muffins and pastries they served at the coffee breaks, and stuck to black coffee, tea and water as beverages, but I'm still feeling the effects of the cheese, the cream sauce and sitting on my butt for three days straight (jeans are kinda tight - honestly - this may be tmi but I got undressed yesterday and had painful ridges around where the waistband was digging in!) I'm not stepping on the scale till Wednesday. I just bought a couple pounds of salad and am going to be eating that, and fruit, and lentils for the next few days till I feel back to normal.
