Trying to lose 10 lbs. forever club toniahayes
  May 30 2007 23:53
I am interested in finding others who have been struggling for a long time with losing the "last 10 lbs". .  I've been battling to lose 10 lbs for many years.  Actually, I've lost 10 in the last year but I needed to lose 20 a year ago (not just 10).

I run, bike and swim now and have been participating in running 5k's and triathlons.  I have firmed up but would like to wear a size 8 comfortably.  I may want to go on to a size 6 next.

I think that if I had some friends with the same goals, then I would stay motivated.  Maybe we can share ideas and recipes.

Let me know if you are out there and interested.

Good morning everyone!

I just ran 6 miles in 58 minutes and 8 seconds.  I feel really great about that.  I plan to swim and take a walk later.

Tonia,

I love reading your posts! You are so motivating.  A BodyAttack class is brutal.  It consists of 15 minutes of very high impact continuous aerobics, 6 minutes of concentrated upper body strength training, 20 minutes of very high impact aerobics, 6-7 minutes of concentrated lower body strength training, 5-6 minutes of intense abdominal work and then a cool down. There are no breaks or transitions.  I really feel great when I am finished.  The instructor of BodyAttack has the best body in the gym, so that is one of the reasons I take it.  I want to look like her!

I agree with you though, I think I am really going to have to tough it out during the week if I want to see results.  I also weigh myself everyday.  I can go up and down 3-4 pounds.  Salt is really my enemy, so I have to be aware of that.  I will have to pay more attention to my daily weigh ins to see if I see a pattern similiar to the one you described.

Trixie, I am trying to learn how to play tennis.  My son is taking lessons and he is turning me into his practice partner.  It is really a tough sport.  After about 30 minutes, my shoulder starts to ache and I need to take a break.  I am not sure what that is about.

Mburns, how are your workouts going?  I was wondering if you had a desk job or an active job.  I am a teacher and it is so great in the summer, but after Labor Day I will be back to trying to squeeze in a workout around the demands of a full-time job. I am a morning person, so during the school year I get up at 5:00AM and put in 45 minutes before I have to get ready for work.  That sounds so early because right now I sleep in until 6:30AM.

Goals for today: 1300 calories, run walk swim!

Have a good day and good luck!

Di

Hey all!  Thought you might be interested in the following link from CNN:

"Sneaky little slim-down tricks"

Di, your shoulder might not be used to the repetitive motion yet.  Try this:  when you hit the ball, make sure that you pivot your core with the stroke so that the power comes from your body and not your arm.  Also, take lots of tiny steps to get in better position so that you don't have to stretch too much to reach the ball.   And here's the best tip that my dad gave me:  when you're hitting a backhand, point your front shoulder (your right shoulder if you're right handed) exactly where you want the ball to go.  It will head in the right direction.

Okay, to work for real!  Have a great day!

Yeah- the "something light on the side" was a baked potato.  I don't know how much more I can take of this!!!  Luckily they leave on Sunday and I can (hopefully) get back to normal.  The other plus side is that I find myself eating super-healthy during the day because I know it's all going to hell when I get home!!!!

Di- I have a desk job.  Pretty much always sitting.  My workouts have been basically non-existent for the past week or so.  I try to go for walks during lunch, or walk to the further train station.  But other than that I haven't been getting much in.  I feel like I need to spending time with the inlaws.  That's another thing that should get back to normal once they leave.  There's a pilates class that I like to take on Wednesday nights, but I haven't been since they've been here.  Can't wait to get back to that!!

And great job on the run Di!  Four miles has been my max running distance, but I really want to work my way up.

I used to weigh myself every day but I've started only doing it once a week.  I fluctuate so much (like everyone else) that it would just make me frustrated when it was such a drastic difference.  I feel like weighing in once a week gives me a more accurate picture.  Although I do miss those "skinny" days on the scale!

Today is my last day at this job- starting a new one tomorrow.  Really excited (my job now was completely dead end) but also a little nervous.  Might forget about the family tonight and just go for a run anyway to work off some of that nervousness.

Okay, off to finish up the last of the stuff on my desk.  Hope everyone has a great day.

Ran 2 1/2 miles yesterday, but am having some trouble with shin splints. Has anyone had these before? I just recently ordered new running shoes so hopefully they might help. Any other suggestions would be great!
#305 toniahayes Jul 24 2007 17:47
Steph, the new shoes are a biggie for the shin splints.  Also, try not to increase your distance more than 10% every three workouts.  You might try some Biofreeze or ice them after running.  Injuries usually are a result of overuse, or not stretching properly before and especially after exercise.

Di, Tally is a blond hair brown-eyed Cocker Spaniel.  No, I don't think  my hubby has caught on to the consequeces yet.

Mburns, good luck on the new job.  Be patient with yourself and give yourself 6 months to adjust.  Hope you survive the Inlaws... Sometimes it would be nice if in-laws could come for a visit without expecting to be entertained 24/7.

Trixi, Thanks for the link.  I will check it out.

Guess I better get back to work.  As you can see, I am not keeping the goal of staying focused.
#306 amyb3517 Jul 24 2007 19:33
I have been posting here for 54 days (since June 1) and have officially lost 10lbs!!
#307 amyb3517 Jul 24 2007 19:37
I have taken a look at what I've been doing for the past 3 weeks that has made me stop losing (I am not gaining, just not losing)

Here is what I have discovered:

1.  Writing/typing it all down IS working

2.  Double cardio sessions ARE working

3.  posting my weight IS Helping

I took a look back at my workout days vs. non workout days, my counting calorie days vs. my NOT counting days... (I encourage everyone to do this... it is a real reality check)

Tomorrow I am going  to endevor to create something new.  I don't know if anyone is interested, but I need a little push to get me to stay on track until September 22.  I have been posting for 9 weeks on the Weight loss Challenge thread and it has also been extremely helpful.
#308 amyb3517 Jul 24 2007 19:55
I think what people write about what works for them is VERY helpful..... for example, the 2-3 lb "scale game" as I call it.  It is not humanly possible to gain 3 pounds in one day, however, I get on the scale, and BAM!!! it throws me into a tizzy.  I think it was Tonia who said that watching her salt intake was what she needed to focus on................ DUH!!!! Apparently, so do I!!! That could very well be my problem.

Di~~~ great job on the 6 miler.  A swim as well??? You are amazing!

Tonia~~~~ 24 miles on the bike!!! YEAH!  I always carry AT least a gel in my bike pouch, just for cases like that.

Scalloping?  Is that what I think it is?  Where are you?  Can I come scalloping with you??? I LOVE SCALLOPS, and no one else in the clan does~~~~ I will bring the Corona LIGHT and the limes.

mburns18~~ thanks for the advice... any advice on the minister who is getting called away and now can't do the ceremony?  (this just in...... )  I have a recurring nightmare that I break my leg and have to get to the church 2 hours before so I can stand up on the altar so no one will know.  I am also going to take your advice on the getting rid of the bad.  If I don't have a glass of wine or a snack for too many days in a row-- POOF!  the whole bottle is gone in one sitting and the whole package of Oreos finds it way into my stomach.  good luck with the in-laws..... I went to Ireland for 10 days with some friends and stayed with her parents...... their idea of a vegetable is potatoes and carrots..........or that gross seaweed stuff they eat right out of the packet!!!

Trixi~~~ sounds like you are doing amazing... I am going to try and UP the INTENSITY or the time of my cardio in an effort to shake things up.  In other words, instead of slogging along my three miles at a 10 min/mile pace, I am going to throw in a few speed workouts and not worry about the mileage.  2 miles at a 9 min pace with a 10 min warm up run and a 5-10 min cool down run.   things like that.

Tonia (again)  I have been doing the exact same thing with the set point (see earlier post about salt)  I think that salt/water play a much bigger role than we allow ourselves to admit.  Also, the weekday/weekend thing may work for you, I have several friends who tow the line all week and as long as they exercise on the weekends, they pretty much eat what they want, and then they don't feel like they HAVE to binge to get all the good stuff in.........they know next weekend is right around the corner.

I am developing a PLAN.... check here tomorrow, and I will try and have it ready.

Amy

Amy girl, you are so motivating!  I'm always impressed with how energized and analytical you are.  But I guess you do that sort of thing for a living, so it makes sense that you'd be good at it!

Do you listen to podcasts?  (You don't need an mp3 player b/c you can listen to them online, but I like to listen to them while I'm hiking.)

Fitpod and Exercise Radio are two podcasts that have music at particular bpms (beats per minute) so you can choose how fast you want to go.

I also like listening to the Fitness Rocks podcast.  It's a doctor who reads medical literature and then produces podcasts about health, fitness, nutrition, etc.  He's very informative and interesting.

Anyway, the doctor had a podcast I thought you would find interesting:

"How Intensity Affects Exercise Benefits"

Cheers!

Hi folks, I'd like to join the discussions. I don't have a great deal of weight to lose, but it seems to be going very slowly.
I tracked my weight and what I eat for about about 1.5 years here. I saw an increase around the end of December (quelle suprise!) After a visit home to my parents where we seemed to be eating every three hours, chatting, my weight hit an all-time high of 67.7kg (BMI about 23). That was about 3 weeks ago. Now I weigh about 66.2kg. I'm not doing any exercise apart from half an hour's brisk walk every day, and I take in about 1500 cals on average.
Today has not been that good. I cycled to work and back (40 minutes total) plus the brisk walk, and that seemed to do something to my appetite. I calculated that I took in 100 cals more than I used up today. :-(
Anyway, good luck everyone. I hope joining this discussion will help me, and I hope I can help others as I go along.
#311 trixitrix Jul 25 2007 00:28
Hi linden!  I like to think that if the weight comes off slowly that means that it will probably stay off.  Looks like you did a double workout today, which is what some of us have been doing, with generally good results.  Did you make sure to drink enough water before and after your walk and bike rides?
#312 linden Jul 25 2007 12:15
I don't think I'm being that careful with my water intake. That is a good reminder.

This is great. There are lots of very inspirational people on this website. I'm enjoying reading your experiences.

Hello Everyone,

A Big Congratulations to Amy for 10 lbs! Makes me want to pop the cork and offer you a big Hurrah.   Looking forward to your post tomorrow about  the   "PLAN".  Although, I do hope everyone doesn't decide to leave this thread.  It has been a great encouragement to me and I hope to everyone else.

What in the world is that minister thinking??? That's crazy to do that to someone without at least finding a replacement.  My husband is a minister-- you can fly us up and he will perform the ceremony :-)

Yes, the scallops are what you think they are.   I've lived in Florida all of my life and never remember scalloping.  You go out into 4-8 ft. of water and snorkle. When you see one, you go down and get it and put it into a mesh bag.  My goal was to see how many I could get in one scoop.  Four was my record. The guy that took us got nine.

HI Linden, we are glad to have you in our forum.   We post our workout and eating goals; Our chanllenges; our successes; our plan to overcome our challenges; rewards and consequences; and generally whatever works or isn't working for us.

Trixi, thanks for all of the resources you've given us.

Accomplished yesterday's goals!! Except, I haven't weeded the beds yet. Will try to get to that today.

Weigh-In: 140.8  down -4.2 lbs.  (I can feel that I am going to continue on the downward trend for the next couple of weeks. I am feeling the mental resolve to "just do it"?   Did you feel that, Amy, during the 10 lbs? Basically like when a person finally decides to quit smoking no matter what) Guess I get to buy that new nightie today :-)

Today's goal: Tri Exercise class and a swim.  I am tappering for the Sprint Triathlon on Saturday.

Eating: 1400 calories

Consequence for not meeting today's goals: Weeding three back-yard beds.

Greatest Challenge: Going to a great resturant tonight and will be tempted by all of the yummie things on the menu.  I will eat some vegis before I go.  I will not have the dessert.  I will look for fish or something lean.  I will drink a large glass of water before I go and take some psyllium & CLA to fill me up.

Have a great day everyone!! And thanks for taking the time to post.
#314 dievans Jul 25 2007 15:51
Good morning everyone!

Yeah Amy!!!!I think that is so fabulous.  Please stay on and keep us motivated.

Tonia,  I am so envious of you living in Florida.  I too love scallops, but never had had the opportunity to actually get them myself.  Where is your tri and what are the distances?  Good luck with the tapering.  Sometimes during tapering I feel stir crazy!

Welcome Lindy, where are you posting from?  I am not too good at metrics, but it looks like your bmi is in the healthy range.  Your activity level looks great too!  Welcome!

Trixie, great idea with the podcasts.  I am going to look into that later today.

Today I was down -4 pounds. Yeah!  I completed a BodyAttack class at 7:15 and I am now working on stripping my cabinets.  Later I hope to swim and walk.  1300 calories is my goal and lots of water!

Good luck!

Di

Hello!

Amy, you are such an inspiration!  Are you going to keep at losing weight before the big day?

Linden, you mentioned in your post that your workouts made you hungry, which derailed your calorie consumption.  Maybe you were thirsty - a lot of experts say that the two feelings can be confused with each other.

Di, I've been listening to the Fitness Rocks podcasts almost obsessively during my hikes.  The good doctor really researches and reviews fitness/health issues and has a lot of insight on the specific effects of diet and exercise and chronic diseases, bones, strength, supplements, etc.  I really recommend them.

Tonia, I used to live in Florida - I remember going late-night crabbing but I've never been scalloping.  Sounds like a blast!

Mburns, good for you for recognizing that you needed to leave your old job.  Hope the new one is more fulfilling.

Okay:

Weigh-in:  Down 1 pound from last week so I'm at -4, which is where I was at 3 weeks ago, but I'm glad to be back on track.  Huzzah!

Report for Tuesday:  Completed all my goals, do not have to clean oven and microwave oven.

Goal for Wednesday:  1300 calories, 1 workout, pushups.

Consequence for not reaching goals:  clean ovens.

Biggest challenge:  Eating well during the day to offset the burgers that my fella plans on grilling tonight.

Good work, everyone!  Thanks for being part of such a great support system!  (Hugs all around)

#316 mburns18 Jul 26 2007 13:15
Hi everyone!  New job started yesterday, so far so good, but just a lot of paperwork.  I hope I get into real "work" soon!

Yesterday was a pretty healthy day (compared to lately anyway).  Walked to and from the office from the train (instead of getting on another train).  It's only about a mile and half each way, but it's more than I've been getting lately.  Also walked this morning!

Dinner was a antipasto type salad (although there was a potato on the side.  You're right Amy- the Irish and the Scottish love their potatoes!).  No dessert.

Feeling pretty good about myself today!

Have to run, don't want to get caught on the internet on my second day.

Congrats Amy on the 10 lbs!
#317 toniahayes Jul 26 2007 13:21
Good morning,
Trixi- congratulations for getting back on track!  And concratulations for the 4 lbs. That's awesome. I know we are building muscle because of the exercise we are doing which means our metabolism if getting higher. Huzzah!

Dievans, awesome on the 4 lbs. also.  To answer your question, the Sprint Triathlon is 1/4 mile swim in the lake, a 7 mile bike, and a 2 mile run.  I call it a Super-Sprint.  But it does have hills which will  be a challenge since I am used to flat-land.  I would like to finish in less than 1:10:00.  I may start TTOM- has that ever happened to anyone on a Tri?  If so, what did you do? Would you cancel?

Isn't it funny that all of us who don't have a wedding to keep us motivated are down the same amount of 4 lbs?  What's up with that??  Do we need to get re-married?

I celebrate that even though I am still trying to get to my goal weight, I am 45 years old and , I thank God, I am in the best shape of my adult life. During high-school I was on the gymnastics team  and did a lot of water skiing.  I never had a weight problem until I got married and quit exercising.  I also think I did a lot of emotional eating because it seems like my weight problem started after a very hard season (7 deaths in our family in a year, three moves in 2 years,  and something else that was very stressful).  I was also in my early to mid-thirties when all of this took place which seems to be the age when women start to struggle with their weight. But I feel really great today and have made some great life-style changes over the past two years.

I'd love to hear how all of you are changing and getting fitter.  We so focus on the number on the scale sometimes and it's nice to see how we are changing our lives which may or may not reflect on the scale.

Yesterday: Accomplished all goals except for weeding the beds for my consequence. Hopefully I'll get to it today.  Calories under 1400. The consequences are working for me. I didn't get a chance to go buy that nightie but hopefully I will tomorrow.  Maybe the rewards will motivate me too.

Today: Run two miles at easy pace. 1400 calories.
Greatest challenge: Getting my behind off of this computer and getting out in the Florida heat to do it. Also, keeping track of my calories at my Pampered Chef party  tonight.
Consequence for not meeting today's goals: Weeding three back-yard beds.
#318 stephh0701 Jul 26 2007 13:24
Amy- that is so awesome! i can't wait until I've finally met my goal.

Trixi, those podcasts are definitely interesting. Thanks for that information.

I have never scalloping but those things do taste so good! i might have to do that next time I head off to Florida... which also saounds amazing right now.

I weighed myself yesterday for the first time in 3 weeks and I am down -4 lbs! I was so excited as these are the first 4 pounds I think I've ever lost in my life! I tried on a pair of jeans this morning that  usually hug a little tight and definitely show off my love handles but no more love handles today.

Challenge today for me is the same as tonia, work is buying lunch for an all day meeting which is always some sort of pasta or pizza which is never good. Also, going out to dinner tonight.. going to take some advice from tonia and eat veggies before I go-great idea!

Hope everyone has a lovely day!
#319 dievans Jul 26 2007 16:50
Good morning everyone!

I went on a 10 mile very hilly bike ride.  When I took off my helmet, my hair was soaked.  It is very humid today in PA. I plan to go for a good walk later and stay within 1300 calories.

I think stressers in life really do take their toll on emotional eaters.  My family was in a horrific auto accident in June of 2004 and it changed our lives forever.  My daughter, then 14, was seriously injured and we didn't know if she would make it.  She was in a coma for 7 days and in the hospital for 7 weeks.  She has had 23 surgeries and is still learning how to walk distances greater than a few blocks.  We put all of our trust in God, and thanks to tons of prayer, she is doing great.  We were so lucky she suffered no brain damage.   I never really had a weight problem and was always very active before the accident, but after, that all changed.  I spent every moment possible with my daughter for the first  6 months and although I don't have to do that any more, my life still revolves around her appointments, therapy, and her needs.  She has become very independent and is doing many things with her friends, so I thought this is the time to get those 10 pounds off that I gained during her recovery.  Well, now it is 6 pounds that I have gained. So I am really making progress.

Enough sad stuff. I just wanted to share my experience and let you know that I think we can get through the tough times in our lives and stay healthy.

Well, I gotta go!

Di
#320 trixitrix Jul 26 2007 19:28
Wow....Tonia and Di, you are two truly amazing women.  Thank you for sharing your stories.  I am very glad that you are surrounded by loving and caring people in your daily lives and that you spend time biking and running in this beautiful world we live in.

Steph, congrats on the 4 pounds!  I think that's the magic number today.

Mburns, hope work today surprises you in good ways.

Short on time today, so:

Report for Wednesday:  Met all goals, do not have to clean ovens.

Goal for Thursday:  1400 calories, 2 workouts, 40 pushups.

Biggest challenge:  I'm going to a movie tonight and my husband always gets popcorn.

Hugs all around!
