If I commuted every day of the week starting next week for this month I'd only manage around 720 miles (36 miles round trip). 1500 is just beyond my imagination. That's 375 miles a week. I'll be lucky this month to get 240 ... 1/2 of that being my regular weeky ride with my co-worker. I think this weekend after I finish the last things I'm doing to my bike I'll hit the mountain road. It's only 4.4 miles from my driveway to the top and back... but I wonder how much better I'll do after more regular riding? It is a nice test anyway just to see how few times I can put my feet down. I'd like to be able to make it to the top without stopping. Even if it's at a snails pace. |

23 work days available to ride to work. I rode my bike for 18 of those days totaling 540 commuter miles for the month. I had to drive 5 days due to inclement weather. I also rode for 311 recreation miles including the 75 mile group ride 851 miles for the month. |

So, Dan I did 40 today, did you do 80?
About 35 miles into the 40, I noticed a thumping coming from the back end of my bike. I stopped to check it out and my wheel was rubbing the brakes. At first I thought a spoke must have broken but actually it was the tire. It had split apart. Well it exploded in short order and I was left standing on the side of the road trying to decide who I could call to come and get me. Then I remembered an article I read about a month ago about how you can find most things you need for an emergency repair in the ditch. Well, right beside me was a large styrofoam cup. I figure I'd give it a try and I replaced my tube and I lined the area where the tire split with a big piece of styrofoam. It held air and although it wobbled quite a bit it got me home. Of course I rode gingerly. |

*insert something about necessity being the mother of invention*
Styrofoam as a tire boot! great improvisation! it's wonderful how innovative we can be when given very few resources in a time of need. anything to avoid that call home to be picked up :-) i had a similar situation on a commute and i ended up using my laminated company property pass for my laptop (essentially a laminated business card) as a tire boot. after that i chopped up the tire into 100 little pieces and i carry a few with me now. |

Good job getting it done. Nice to see that you don't need a whole store full of parts to make it work, just a couple of key parts are all you need for most situations.
This reminds me that I need to replace my front tire. I have some sidewall cracking and I can see some of the belts that hold the tire together. I would hate to have a blow out on the front at any kind of speed. It could hurt a lot. |

Another thing to use if it should happen again is a folded dollar bill. Beleive it or not that is one of the strongest patches you can carry with you.
trh, no you got me today did 28 with the wife after pigging out at the local chinese buffet!! DAN |

My tail bag contains:
* spare tube * patch kit * rubber cement * a generous piece of duct tape on the inside cover of the patch kit, for use as a tire boot * three tire levers * a bike multi-tool * a pressure gauge * a pair of rubber gloves There's room left for my cell phone and keys, and if I unzip the expander bit, I can fit arm warmers and a Clif Bar in there, too. I can ditch the pressure gauge now, since I bought a Topeak Road Morph pump, and that has a built-in gauge. TT tonight at the Oval. 5 miles in 13:07 (22.7mph). Not as good as I would have hoped--maybe I rode to hard on the way to the track. |

What a good thing to talk about. What do you carry when you ride.
In my wedge I carry Multi tool 1 extra tube some scabs second wind co2 inflater that also has a backup manual pump and co2 cartridges a couple of dollars set of tire levers |

behanna, let me know how you like that morph pump. i looked at one but ultimately decided to just schlep my frame pump back & forth between my bikes instead of buying a second pump. i really like that it has the pressure gauge. i carry : park multi tool 2 tire levers 1 spare tube 1 patch kit 2 tire boots a business card with my name & emergency contact info small cable lock plastic bag to put clothes in if it starts to rain a clif bar (not the same clif bar - it gets eaten & replaced frequently!) i recently bought a prepaid cell phone to carry on rides (i don't have one otherwise), so i chuck that in there before i leave, along with a credit card and a $20. |

My seat wedge has;
spare tube, patch kit, small cable bike lock, tire levers, multi tool, small first aid kit. I have frame pumps on all my bikes. I also carry a leather (for lack of better name) fanny pack when I ride; In this I carry money, maps, ID's, sun screen, energy bars, plastic baggies to cover computer and cell phone in rain, sun glasses. It has enough space to carry arm and leg warmers or rain gear if I go out expecting rain. It's actually not very big but I have grown to feel lost if I forget to take it with me. behanna, nice going on the TT, you'll get that speed up I'm sure! DAN |

| I don't know if I belong in this group or not, lol! Three weeks ago, I bought a cheap WalMart bike that you will make fun of, but it fit in my very limited budget and I love it! (You would also probably chuckle at the purple tassels my boss bought me for my handlebars, but they make me giggle every day! ) I'm no hard core cyclist, but I'm improving! Until I bought my bike, I hadn't been on a bike in 20 years. My first ride was to work on the Sunday I bought my bike, to see how long it would take. It took 16 minutes and I thought that I was going to die! For the next few days, I biked to work, but I had to stop and take a short walk break half way there. By the end of week 1, no more walk breaks! I?ve been riding to work for the last 3 weeks, and I can ride the whole way. I?m very proud of myself! My longest ride to date is 27 minutes. I think I could ride farther than that now, but we are in the middle of a heat wave. 90 degree days and high humidity are no joke when you have allergies and a bit of asthma. But I?m still riding! And as soon as the heat breaks, I?m going to try for some longer rides. | ||

plaidpooka, Welcome to the club!!
No we will not laugh at you as long as you don't get discourged because some of us ride a little farther than normal people! LOL I think it's great that you are using your bike for fitness and to commute, make yourself better and save money on gas, nice! You have done a nice job of eazing your way into it, before you know it you will be doing 1 hour rides like you do 15 minute ones now. So where are you and what type bike do you have, one of the other members(nightc1) has a bike from wal-mart and he loves it! So, where the bike comes from isn't important, just that you love to ride. plaidpooka, glad to see you join in the group! And hey most people are pretty cool around here. I ride a GMC Denali Road Bike that was purchased at walmart for $150. Last thursday I put 30 miles on it while keeping up with a co-worker of mine that rides a much lighter and much more $$$ cannondale road bike. So enjoy riding whatever you got. I have an older 14 speed Huffy Mountain Bike that currently my wife is riding until we can get her a more comfortable bike. |

| Look at me I ride indoors, I just love my legs pumping up and down so easy on my knees and right foot, but am thinking of getting an inexpensive bike just to ride outdoors for a little at a time. I am going to try to ride 500 on my stationary bike this month. Maybe in a couple of months I will shoot for 100 outdoors and 400 indoors. | ||

Count me in. I just got a bike two weeks ago. I am 39 and have not been on a bike for at least 15 years. Just two hours ago I accomplished riding up to work and back again (about 5 miles each way) which is quite good for me. I am sooo hooked on the feeling of actually getting in shape. Now if only the cars would pay attention.......
