Trying to lose 10 lbs. forever club toniahayes
  May 30 2007 23:53
I am interested in finding others who have been struggling for a long time with losing the "last 10 lbs". .  I've been battling to lose 10 lbs for many years.  Actually, I've lost 10 in the last year but I needed to lose 20 a year ago (not just 10).

I run, bike and swim now and have been participating in running 5k's and triathlons.  I have firmed up but would like to wear a size 8 comfortably.  I may want to go on to a size 6 next.

I think that if I had some friends with the same goals, then I would stay motivated.  Maybe we can share ideas and recipes.

Let me know if you are out there and interested.

Good morning!

I just got back from the gym and a BodyAttack class.  It is so hard to workout outside in this humidity in PA!

This morning was the first time I weighed myself since leaving for vacation on July 1.  My weight is exactly the same.  I am only down -4 pounds since the beginning.  I must say I was really happy I did not gain.

My goals for today are to stay under 1350 while adding more protein.  I am going to shoot for 30 grams of protein total.  I am also going to swim later if it doesn't storm.  If it storms, maybe I will do weight training.

I know I could lose these last 6 pounds if life wouldn't keep getting in the way!

Good luck everyone,

Di

Hello, my name is Vicki.  I am 48 years old, currently weigh 137 down from 157 back in February.  Would like to get below 130, but really struggling with these last few pounds.  As I saw mentioned above summer parties and activites have really messed with me.  I am maintaining, but that is it.   I aim for 1200-1300 calories per day, and exercise 30 - 45 minutes every other day, the other days I play soccer.
#246 platinumbutterfly Jul 11 2007 20:26

Alot of people say they don't think I need to lose more weight or Ill be to skinny and ect but If I got nekkid in front of them they would see what Im talking about..lol

Good morning everyone!

I just finished a 4 mile run and a good stretch.  The plan is to swim for 30 min this afternoon.  I also plan to stay within 1350 calories and continue to try to add more protein.

Welcome Vicki!  I think that it is great that you play soccer.  Are you on a team?

Butterfly, I can relate to the naked thing.  I think I look pretty good in my clothes, but put me in a swimsuit or my birthday suit and I am in serious trouble.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Di - thanks for the welcome.  I play on two teams - one is 30 and over and the other is 40 and over.   Same women basically just different leagues.  Currently playing on a summer league twice a  week.

Hi everyone!  I'm back from vacation, which was wonderful.  I visited my in-laws, then saw a dear friend get married.  However, I fell off the wagon (more like flung myself off it) and won't be buying myself a new top.  I tried for a few days but then just had to go with the flow as far as travelling and the wedding went.

Weighed in this morning and gained 2 pounds!   Boo!  So in total I'm -2.  I hope some is water weight and will be watching my sodium intake this week - I ate a lot of salty snacks and drank a lot of wine last week (the wedding was a big Italian wedding at a vineyard) and only did pushups as exercise.  My husband says he gained weight too, so we're eating extra healthy this week - last night we had steamed clams and steamed veggies for dinner, for example.

Amyb, glad to see your twinge did not affect your participation in the race last weekend!  I hope your wedding planning is going smoothly.  And...bagpipe lesson?

Di, congrats on not gaining any weight over vacation!

Tonia, I will work on the "driver's seat" plan - thanks for that post - it will help me get back into focus.

So, for Thursday:  1200 calories, 2 workouts.  Think about retaining control in uncontrollable situations.

Biggest challenge:  drinking enough water and moving enough to offset the chips,  pizza, wedding cake, full-fat ice cream, wine, beer, and delicious Italian food that I consumed last week.

I'm happy to see all the new folks on this board too!

I'm a recovering anorexic & within the last three months I've gained a significant amount of weight & am looking for a way to lose 10 pounds for good. I am 5'6" and weigh 117lbs.

What's the healthiest way to shed the pounds in a healthy way while trying to avoid falling into my old habits?
#251 dievans Jul 12 2007 21:02
Hello Shedub,

According to your height and weight, your BMI indicates you are "underweight".  The best advice I have is for you to speak with your physician.  I am willing to bet what you are looking for is tone and not weight loss.  Talk to your doctor about what type of exercise program would be best for you as well as a healthy eating plan.  Good luck!

Butterfly - you don't look like you weigh what you say you weigh! so be glad! I am 5'4 and 123 lbs and look like I weigh 20 lbs more than you!!!

Oh man, the last couple of weeks have been really bad. Can't control what I eat and don't exercise.

I also agree about the naked thing. I look ok in my clothes but naked or bathing suit...not so much. Damn hips and thighs!

Good luck with the weekend everyone, I know i'll need it!
#253 trixitrix Jul 13 2007 15:56
Chin up, mcpchants!  Do you think you're slacking a bit since your friend's wedding is over?  Do you need another type of motivation?

I think a pound of my weight gain was water weight - I weighed myself today and it looks like I only gained 1 pound, so I'm still at -3.  Hurrah!

Report for Thursday:  met calorie and exercise goals.  Drank a lot of water and iced green tea.

Goals for Friday:  1400 calories, 1 workout, 40 pushups.

Biggest challenge:  well, it's the weekend, but I intend to take it easy so hopefully there won't be too many temptations.  If there are, I will try to remember to stay in the "driver's seat."

Here's to a great weekend, everyone!

Hi Everyone,

If you were wondering what happened to me, I was out of town for a few days.  I couldn't wait to get online to read your posts.  I will post later this evening or tomorrow morning-- just wanted to let you know I'm still here rooting for all of you great "losers".

Dievans and Trixitrix, welcome back... I missed you.

Dievans, You should do well with the increase in protien... it can curb appetite and cravings. Whey protein is good.  I like to use it in a morning shake with fruit.  Use fruit juice or soy milk for the liquid.

You asked about my next event... July 28th is a sprint Triathlon in Clermont FL... I call it a Super Sprint because it is only a 1/4 mile swim in the lake, 7 mile bike, and two mile run.  It should be easy.  Not sure what time i am aiming for.  I haven't thought about that yet.  When is your next event?

MCPchants, Great job on passing up the popcorn at the movie.  The smell is always so tempting.  You have seemed down in the last week or so.  Are you okay?? Are you tired, lonely, angry, depressed?  Maybe you need a new exercise goal or challenge?

Nalani5, Platinumbutterfly, vccooper, welcome!  Let us know your goals... exercise, calorie etc.  We try to weigh-in once per week... you choose your day that is best for you.  We try to post our biggest challenge and how we plan to attack it.  It could be an upcoming party with lots of food & drink or maybe obstacles to our exercise routine etc.

Vccooper, great job on the 20lb loss!  Hope we can help encourage you the rest of the way.

Okay,

Saturday:  swim 600 meters; walk in the evening.  Taking it easy today.  Had a great massage yesterday.

I am up on the scale from my little beach trip.  I am doing a modified fat-flush for the next few days.  At least until weigh-in.  No alcohol, lots of vegis, 2 servings of fruit, 8 - 12 oz lean protien, 2 eggs (egglands best), cranberry water, and flax, psyllium.  This usally gets me balance and jump started.  I know that i've needed to do this.

Sunday: 15 mile bike; fat-flush except for dinner at a friends.  They are healthy eaters so it shouldn't be too bad.

I love you all and your support.  Thanks for being there.

Good morning everyone!

Tonia, it is so great to have you back!  I think it is great you are doing another tri.  My next event is Sept 9.  It is a half-marathon.  I have never done any running over a 10K before, so I have quite a bit of training ahead of me.  I have whey protein, but for some reason stopped using it a while back.  I am going to give it another shot.  I really like egg beaters in the morning and I do feel satisfied a little longer than with just cereal.

Mcpchants,

You have done such a great job so far.  Every day just start over and don't think too much about yesterday.  You can do this.  I agree with  trixi, a new goal might be in order.

Trixi,

You gotta hate water weight.  We went out for chinese and even though I got chinese vegetables with rice and only ate about 1/3 of it, my weight was up a pound.  I should have never stepped on the scale.  Oh well. Water, water, water.

Today I  ran 4.5 miles, stretched for 20 minutes, and then did 20 minutes of strenght training.  I hope I can increase my distance enough by Sept 9 to do the half marathon.  If not, I will shoot for a different event.  My plan is to stay within 1350, drink lots of water, and stay away from anything salty.

Good luck!

Di

Dievans, a half-marathon in Sept. sounds exciting.  I believe you can do it!  As far as distance... you'll be able to get there... you can always walk part of it if you have to...but i don't think you will have too.

I plan to run a 10k in Nov.  & Dec.  Not sure if I will ever do a marathon or half-marathon.  My biggest goal will be an Olympic Distance Triathlon, hopefully in 2008.

trixitrix, dievans, toniahayes, and mcpchants,

glad to hear you are all alive and well..... I have been a little under the weather for the past couple of days..... then I went on an eating spree!!  Thought I really messed up my left arm - woke up Wednesday with hand swollen, tingly, numbness up my arm, etc.  Got the swelling down and went to see my doc... he gave me some motrin and a script to get an x ray if the swelling didn't subside within the day.... it did thank goodness!! Now for the bad part...

I think it hurts from biking! I don't remember any specific trauma, but I took a few days off and just did a short run on Thursday... I went for a bike ride today and REALLY had to pay attention to hand position and how much pressure I was putting on my hands.  Any of you triathletes had this problem?  the pain is on the lower part of my palm, and the meaty part of my thumb.

Anyhow:   What is everyone weighing in at????

Are we all making progress?

trixitrix--- I didn't think anyone would notice (or care) but yes, I started taking lessons this past fall..... my goal is to learn to play more than just at funerals!!  I have a great instructor, now all I need are faster fingers!

sorry about the water weight.... I am beating myself up over indulging as well.

toniahayes - -another tri???? good for you.  I am sure you will do amazing.... where is Clermont?

Dievans - I am doing the 1/2 marathon in Rochester, NY on Sept 16..... one week before the wedding.  I just ran a 15k, so I think I am in good shape to keep the training up.
What program are you using?  (or are you?)

I am still trying to go veggie, but I need the tuna and the eggs... I just can't stomach the tofu and most of the whey protein does horrible things to my belly  :(  any advice to try and cut those items out and still not go over my calories????

mcpchants - - what is going on, girl?????? Do I need to come over there and open up a can of whoopass???????? You are amazing, you just need to stop beating yourself up over the miniature disasters (like I do sometimes too)  You fit in the dress for the wedding and looked amazing (I am sure) - -so, ask yourself:  WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO FROM HERE????????

Thank goodness I am working right now, otherwise, I would be eating...................................I managed to stay within 1200 so far, but I did an 81 minute ride at 15.6mph (average) so the Garmin says I burned around 850........ so am I screwing myself by not eating more??????
#259 dievans Jul 15 2007 13:48
Good morning!

Today is my day off, so I did a little housecleaning and I am going to visit family.  My plan is to stay within 1350.

Tonia,  I was thinking the same thing about the half marathon.  There really is no shame in walking at times if I need to.  We will see.

Amyb,

I also had trouble with my hands.  My coach said it had to do with my form.  Try sliding back in the saddle a little bit, push down with your heels, keep your elbows bent, and shoulders relaxed.  While mine were hurting, I did spin classes to practice my new and improved form.  It is worth a try.  For the half marathon, I am using a program I found on active.com for beginners and it is 12 weeks long.  I only have 9 weeks to train, but I am not starting from zero.  I would like to finish in 130 minutes by running a 10 minute mile.  Right now I can run 4 miles in 35 minutes and I can do 6 miles in 55 minutes.

As far as overall progress...   I am down -4 pounds and it my TOTM.  I feel as though I am now stuck at the "last 6 pounds to lose point"  Maybe I need to mix things up again.  We will have to see.

Good luck and keep posting!

Di

Good evening,

Amy, I'll have to admit that the bagpipe thing went right over my head... wow, you are multi-talented!

For the biking hand problem... my left hand went completely numb the other day... I wasn't  wearing my gloves.  It made me realize how important they are.  Dieven's suggestions are good. Also, do you visit a massage theripist who can work on it??  I learned  from 69 year  old ironwoman, who I was trying to keep up with in my last tri,  to rest my wrist on my bar, first on one side and then the other, every so often on my ride.  That has helped. Hope you get well soon.

To answer your question...Clermont is in central Florida.  There is a National Trainging Center there.

I'm not weighing in until Wednesday.  My clothes are fitting good, and I was able to put on a pair of pants today that were a size smaller than what I normally wear. If it wasn't for this forum.  I think I would have gained weight with all of the events  and trips I've participated in. When I am out, and I think about my posts and having to account for myself, it keeps me more in line.

Do we need to do something else to help us stay motivated?  Maybe we can give ourselves consequences for not sticking to our goals.  Such as:  If I say I am going to a party and I am only going to have one glass of wine and i end up drinking the whole bottle, then I have to give myself a consequence.  Consequences have to be something that don't benefit me, like picking up trash on the road.  For some, it could be calling the mother-in-law to chat.

If you all have any ideas for getting us to the next set point, lets hear them.  It's easy to look at someone who is 50 lbs overweight, who loses 10 lbs in two weeks and feel discouraged with ourselves.  We have to remember that we are trying to get rid of fat, and we are keeping our muscle in tact because of the exercise we are doing.  We all seem to love our alcohol and I wonder if it is making our livers (which I hear helps us to metabolize fat) sluggish???  I am on a modified fat flush/liver cleanse for the next two weeks... I'll keep you posted to let you know how it goes.

Monday: run 3 mi. ; pilates in evening; modified fat flush; Consequences for not doing the above: Wash my husbands car. Biggest challenge: running in the heat and not being too tired for pilates class.  I will overcome this by getting up early to run by 6:30 am.

Have a great evening!
