drea99, I wouldnt be on South Beach had my PCOS doctor not suggested I lose weight and because of the insulin resistance, specifically South Beach (plus the all around health focus of the plan).  Thats very encouraging that your dad has benefited so well!

Please check out the first few posts of these threads.  I didnt create them myself, just posted them.  Some are very long so you can use the links in the original post to jump to the catagory you want.  For phase1 there's -- what to eat -- what to avoid -- a sample meal plan -- general tips.

Im definitely one with PCOS who has found SB as a tool to control my appetite in a healthy, non diet pill way.  Personally I do carbs by serving more then a count and stay lower then others with 1-2 a day because of my sensitivity.

Rachael, its not hard with Alice coming over daily but the one day she couldnt, I procrastinated til not going and her early email had me make it up that morning. She knows what a procrastinator I am which is probably why she is here everyday.
#223 drea99 Jan 15 2008 15:47
sun thanks for the reply!  i read all the first posts (and all the posts in the group lol) before posting and i have read the book a few times.  and used to get the emails they sent every day or week with a recipe and advice.  and read atkins and read curves low carb and yeah.... if it is in print, ive read it lol.

i have just gotten a lot of conflicting advice about carbs and pcos and insulin resistance.  my endo put me on byetta to start with (but my fasting blood sugar was normal and my insulin was low... but to really test IR should have been a glucose challenge right?) but the byetta made me awfully sick and i started to gain on it so i switched to metformin-- which i never really took.  i just started taking it and it seems ok.  the point:  at the time i saw the endo i was 44 lbs lighter and had no signs of IR or prediabetes but he wanted me on meds b/c of the PCOS itself.  he didnt discuss too much about diet in specific with me-- just that i had done great losing weight and to stay as active as possible.  i rec'd CC to him!

at any rate, i guess ill be starting SB tomorrow.  im scared!  i tend to be a binger and im worried that restricting an entire food group for 2 weeks will be like a great big flashing light: binge! binge! binge!

I am having big problem this time around. No matter how yummy my food looks when i make it, when it comes time to re heat and eat it the food just looks yucky. I wind up taking 3 bites, getting grossed out and just throwing it away. I would feel horrible giving in and getting a sandwhich so i just wind up not eating. So now I'm not loosing weight because i'm probably not eating enough and I'm always starving. This sucks. I'm not sure if my mind is just trying to mess with me or what but i don't know how much longer i can take this.

OMG I totally caved and had a slice for breakfast.  I know BAD BAD BAD,  but  Im stuffed after one slice.  The crust is made from Fiber one cereal  mixed with smart balance butter and water mixed together with splenda and cinnamon.  who would have thought it would be a perfect crust and high in fiber too.  the filling is pure pumpkin with fatfree evaporated milk, splenda. eggs and spices.  Big thumbs up from me.  I almost think its better than the real stuff.  Hopfully the veges Im having for lunch will counteract the pie. LOL

My daughters like that Jen with leftovers.  I wonder if its the repeating of the same meal - maybe a look over the foods list could give you some ideas.  That low cal - weightloss stall is frustrating.  I think how I could eat to many calories and slow down my weight.  Hope youre getting your snacks in and they dont have to be your typical snacks.  Small version of meal type food works too.  ((Hugs))

Gina, crossing mine for you too.  Let us know how you do getting back on = I know Ive had procrastination problems trying to get eating right again.  Luck to you!

BTW Hungry girl has a cool email they send.  Im suspicious about how much of their prepared food suggestions are paid advertising but Ive always the choice to use my own judgement.  Also, the had one recently that addressed although they like letting folks know about great products, that they primarily eat unprocessed and the products in moderation.  They got props in my book for that, considering their advertisers and all.

Drea, at least your working with it.  My doc gave me meds for PCOS including some that helped with weight loss.  Not diet pills but with insulin so the hunger thing.  Took them last summer but when the diet ended, I stopped waiting to get back on diet which didnt happen til this summer but never got back on the pills (which probably are too old if I even know where they are).  GOOD LUCK tomorrow with the SB !!  We'll be here -

Wow, made it round the block.  Its 7/10ths of a mile and yesterday back/ forth was 6/10ths.  Alice says if I cant go any further she could get the car but its preferable to take longer breaks towards the end which is what we did.  Im done with distance. Im ready to work on less breaks (there are a lot) and less crutch dependancy.

And to think on my crazy cig days I broke down at 2/10ths.  I really underestimated the building up.  In theory it sounded fine but I kept thinking of my knee limitations.  Plan to reduce the breaks first because the crutch is so crucial for me.

Giving thanks to pregrilled chicken with zero energy and no dinner.  Had a big 4 lb loss last week which I hadnt seen since my 400+ lbs days.  Dont now if that will make this week quite low or if the increasing exercise will keep it somewhat high but trying to stop anticipating it.  Good beach nite to all !!
#230 getfitgirl Jan 16 2008 11:32
morning.  Im so excited holiday weight is going BYEBYE.  Didnt do any workout yesterday so thats somthing that really needs to be done today.  Jayne, sounds like your workout is going great.  Sorry about the kneee issues.  hopfully that will go away as the pounds keep falling off.

Gina, today is the day Right?  getting back on track?  Think fit!!!

Jenn have you tried freezing it and moving on to some thing else. Thats what i did with that darned ham.  and the Shrimp etoffee.  Im a freezerholic though,  but if its freezer burned I throw it out I cant stand the taste YUCK.  I think I have a month of food in the freezer now..... It went from empty to stuffed LOL

Good luck today!!!

starting South Beach today!  Im scared to give up my bread and vodka....  what about low fat yogurt?  its a bit higher in sugar (natural and added I think).  Is this OK in phase one or should it wait till later?  I really have no idea what I am going to eat for the first 2 weeks.  I can eat eggs for about 1 day or so... sometimes I make them and then have to throw them out because I cant stand the smell of eggs cooking.  I dont eat fish.  Or nuts.  Or pork.

I guess Chicken and I will be getting Cozy.  :)
#232 getfitgirl Jan 16 2008 12:04
the yogurt needs to be sugar free I think.  Honey suckle white makes great turkey products.  We like the rotissere marinated breasts. some lean cuts of beef are good to.  It doesnt have to be eggs for breakfast.  Anything on phase one would be acceptable. Good luck today.  The first couple of days were my worst but hang in there and its totally worth it
#233 sun123 Jan 16 2008 14:39
Sending support to you Drea - the first few days probably will be the hardest.  Remember the carbs will return in two weeks.  I basically dont distinguish breakfast from other meals - for me theyre interchangable.  Make sure you get your snacks too - important to the lack of carb stage.  They say plain yogart and while its not promoted, some modifications are comman so work with it.

Must have fun seeing the scale Sarah - good going! Onward to weigh in tomorrow - great timing :D.

New grocery ads - someone's got to have SB dinners on sale.  Skyblue - I checked Sam's but for walmart, its a territory thing that theyre not stocking locally.  Still waiting on callback from Walmart headquarters though.  Im about to create a post for low or healthy carb dinners.

That was last week Rachael of all who weighed in.  I was waiting to hear what you saw on the scale that made you almost faint.  Youre dedication is awesome!  Whenever I am sick and Im in bed needing the biggest pity party ever.  Luckily I never get sick but if I am, bring on the attention because I turn into a 5yr old girl.  I want chicken soup and cinammon toast thats cut into strips built up like a log cabin and cartoons and pillow fluffing!

EDIT: corrected, had forgotten 'whenever' but Im not sick thankfully

Oops, shouldve said WHEN i feel sick and I'll change that.  Im fine but thanx Racheal!  It never occurred to me how dangerous fainting could be, especially in the close confines of the bathroom.

BTW its real easy for me to copy past everyone's weight from weigh in - I just forget to do it but feel free to remind me at any time.  Just two clicks and its listed.

Im envious - everyone usually has an idea but its always a surprise weighin Thursday.  Then again, I do get the surprise :D

=^..^= MOLLY

#239 sun123 Jan 16 2008 23:08
Thanks Molly - gotta love freebies (and me more then most people).  Now how many other folks can I think of to request fo me too LOL.

Same block walk and a few minutes shorter.  Its strange because with regular walking or running its usually straight through but with the stops I need to do and each stop different length, you never know what the time will be but now with a set distance, the math will be easier.  The increasingly longer I knew I was making better distance but the increasing times - couldnt figure out if my pace was doing better.

Im nuts again - PB to be exact.  It really helps that its in the kitchen especially when getting up is more battle then walking ;P.  Definite deterent for excess.  Just a spoonful brought back to my desk.

Weigh in, weigh in, weigh in!  I cant be the only one hoping to have a bathroom break before the morning scale.  Still far enough apart though that a lot of its luck.  Good luck to all for manana!!
#240 sun123 Jan 17 2008 11:15
Fitting I should be the 1st to check in - crashed early last night and have been up since 1am (making me wonder when I'll crash again today).  Heading to clinic soon.

Good beach wishes for everyone weighing in today !!
