Good luck on your ride Dan. Six Flags was fun yesterday. Not too crowded a little warm. Rode a ton of rides, walked over 8 miles per by pedometer. Wonder how many calories you burn on a roller coaster. Can't seem to find it anywhere. Knee hurts a little but not bad, rode my bike for 20 miles this morning, missed not riding yesterday, and it seemed to help my knee. Anyways off to do some yardwork. Till later good riding, whatever you may be riding. ;] |

The wife and I rode around the neighborhood some. Also earlier today I plotted out a commute path to work. Not sure if/when I'll give that a shot... but in total it's about the same distance that I drive, though completely back roads. I think the morning part would be pretty easy... the way home though I'd have to work a little harder. Total miles is right around 18.4. Picked up a bike rack for the car. No more bikes sticking out of my trunk or out the hatchback on the station waggon. Both of our cars are Volvo's... both purchased used because hey I'm not rich. Also got a matching bike helmet for rides. So no more bright red helmet and blue/black bike. Also got some other little biking tidbits. behanna, thanks for the tips. I have a few printouts with diagrams and stuff ... all attempting that as well. Already I have the seat up higher, maybe too high. I'll have to check the angle on my knee. Still, that alone made riding a bit easier. Then I'll figure out if I need to adjust the seat forward or back... and then raise the handlebars a little. Overall this is going to take a while to find what feels the best, but I'm feeling good about learning so much. |

Well gang just got back from the ride, rained for two hours, but oh well I was bound and determined to ride today,it did stop and was cloudy rest of the way,little wind in the face on way home but not real bad. So here's the details;
133 miles, 7 hours 45 minutes, 17.0mph ave. feel pretty good too, could have gone longer if need be but have to admit I was happy to get home. Now for a nice hot shower........later, DAN |

| Nice Ride Dan!! I'm jealous & way impressed that you stuck with it through 2 hours of rain! Enjoy the shower and a nice dinner :-) | ||

133 miles and you maintained a 17mph average... wow.. that's nice. I'll be lucky to maintain 17 or 18 on that 20 mile challenge... forget 133 miles. I'd probably come in around 12mph average on that distance and would be more than happy to be home. The land here though is so hilly. I was thinking of something though... if I start to commute sometime in the comming weeks, I will have to start eating a bit more. That's a load of calories to burn twice a day (just over 18 miles each way for me). |

night, yes, you will have to adjust your calorie intake to compensate for the extra riding, but watch yourself and don't over do it.
Something else I have found to be true too, as you ride more your body becomes more efficient at burning fuel and the cal/hr that you see listed on most websites I think is to high, at first when you are not quite in shape I think the figures are better. A good example would be that 133 mile ride, it was close to 8 hours by most calculators that should have been around 5000 cals, I ate probalby closer to 3000-3500 yesterday. carri, thanks for the props, I did indeed have a nice dinner, but the thing I enjoyed most was beore the start of the ride there is this real nice bakery on the main street and I treated myself to a big fat cream stick (can we all say trans-fat) OOOHH it was so GOOOOOD. Have a ride this morning too, raining again though, not sure if I'll give it a go or not. Legs feel good, little tired but not as bad as I thought they would be. DAN |

Dan, you deserved that cream stick. Awesome, man, just awesome. Also, interesting thought on the training. I could see that. Now to go out again, very nice man, very nice. :>) nightc1 That part of Alabama is definitely hilly, driven through that area to do some work. IT contractor, have work will travel. The smoke from the South GA wildfires is blowing this way again, so not outdoors for me today. Glad I got outside stuff done already this week. Lookihg at the weather map it seems you're in just a bad a drought, nightc1, as we are. I think Atlanta's smog is a big reason I don't want to ride outdoors. Don't get me wrong, I love outdoors. Played golf weekly for many years, kids can sure change your priorities. Atlanta is already having smog alerts this early in the "summer". Rain would help, none in the forecast though. Ride on! |

thegrayman, thanks! I was just watching the weather channel, man that smoke deal s**ks. Hope you guys see rain real soon, one of those nice slow soaking rains that make you want to sit on the porch and watch and listenand sleep to it.
How old are your kids, You my have said before but, I'm to lasy to go look. Mine are 14 yr boy and 16 yr girl. Now that they are older, and have their own activities, things are a little freer, other than getting them around. Wife is in KY this weekend riding and they both have been busy so I've been playing bachlor, weird being here alone. Did my ride today, light rain, 60 miles, cut off early feeling a little tired, go figure! We went to this resturant for breakfast, I have never been in a slower place in my life, it took and hour and they didn't get the order right. Scratch that one off the list of places to go, LOL figured the holiday weekend was going to keep the post minimal, have to wait tell Tues. to see what's up with everyone. see ya, DAN |

My kids, all girls, are 18, senior to be, 14 and 11. We actually adopted them in December of 2003. They are all sisters and we were their foster parents before adopting them. They've changed us as much as we've changed them. Pretty cool. Rain would be sweet. Meg, my oldest, and I have said we will stop whatever we are doing and do a celebration dance the next time it rains. The fires inhale deeply. Your light ride was more than I did, though I did do my fifty miler today. That was sweet. I drank a ton of water, nearly 200 ounces along the way though I didn't sweat nearly as much as I thought I would. Shows me how far I've come in a couple of months. When I did a 40 miler a couple of weeks ago I was getting zonked at the end cause I didn't eat anything while riding. I ate a couple of Quaker Q-smart bars along the way and only really started to feel tired those last 3 or 4 miles. I had planned to do this tomorrow but the smoke from the fires filled the air here this morning, cancelling our plans for the day, I hope to move them to tomorrow, but it doesn't look promising. Maybe I'll just do a couple of 25 milers tomorrow. One in the morning and one in the evening. I use to go in search of the perfect breakfast on Sundays when I was younger. The best place I ever found was called, appropriately, The Breakfast Club, on Tybee island. Fantastic stuff. Surf and turf omlets, spinach, and other creations that just melted in your mouth, just incredible. The chef was an actually one of the chefs at JFK's JR wedding. Pretty cool. If you ever get down there you have to try it out you'd really like it. Just get there early and forget your diet that day! |

Pretty good weekend so far. I joined Sandy on one of his rides for about 55 miles yesterday and followed up with a 27 mile recovery ride today. I have put in 1400 miles so far this year and I am on track to hit my goal of 125 miles per week this week. It just depends on whether I settle for 45 commute miles or push for 60 commute miles. I felt like I was getting my climbing legs back yesterday but I still need to work on my endurance. Panda, Carrie: During 80+ miles of riding over 5 hours or so this weekend, I checked periodically and as far as I could tell, my sit bones were the points of contact with the saddle even when I was in the drops for a more aero position. There was an article about posture in the May/June issue of Bicycling Magazine. I tried to locate the article on line but couldn't. The authoress, Jessi Stensland is "an accomplished triathlete and fitness constultant." Her premise is that "The most important component in cycling faster and more efficiently is a balanced body and a flat back." Carrie, I hope you will allow me to go out on a limb here. Your remark about soreness rang an alarm bell. I hope that, if you haven' t already switched to a saddle with a cut out center, you will consider doing so soon. |

As promised a few pages back a quick report of my 24 hr mountain bike race.
21 laps 11th place out of 47 solo riders 136 miles 17 hours of riding time Did it on my fully rigid single speed. For those not familiar with this type of racing. You basically see how many laps you can you do in 24 hours on a mountain bike trail. The loop is 6.5 miles give or take. There are several team categories but I do these solo. Here is a quick link to a full write up plus some pictures. This messageboard doesn't lend itself to super long posts. Ride Log Don't know how many calories I burned, a lot. Here's the calorie-count twist. 2 years ago, I weighed 275 pounds. :) |

kclark, dude that is totally awesome, man I thought my ride was tough. 21 laps of 6.5 miles, you have to know what every rock and stick look like on that trail now, LOL! Great acheivement you animal, keep it up!
jc, sounds like your getting in your miles now, endurance if a tough one, it's all about riding and riding and riding. Worst thing is if for some chance you miss a couple weeks you have to go back and staart all over again. Ride on brother! grayman, Hats off to you! It takes special people to take on the responsiblity of children that other adults failed to do! Hope you have more than one bathroom in that home of yours, or do they make you use the kitchen sink,LOL. Eating and riding are my toughest problem, still working on just how to do it. To all the ladies out there, Bicycling mags. has a whole section just for you guys this month, check it out! be back later, Have a nice memorial day, say a little pray for our troops in the field today!!!! Got in 50km this weekend at an average pace of 18-19kph. So far that brings my total to about 225km. I should be biking more and more often as the weather improves.
What a day! We had a nice picnic by the water and everything. I hope next weekend is just as nice! |

Kev, that is fantastic man. Way to go, way to push yourself that last lap. Dan, thanks, but we're just doing what we feel is right. I'll definitely be thinking about the troops my niece's husband just left to head over there. Great guy too, just finished law school and a grad of the Citadel. Swear he could be Governor of SC one day. Just has that look and feel about him. My dad served as well. |

Yeah the drought is hitting us right now. The smoke, on Saturday morning it was thick in the air.. you could smell it. Before it was just a haze and you couldn't see much distance (like my bicycling pics in my profile where you cant see the mountains in the background). Yesterday was much better... less smoke smell. Today I didn't notice the smokey smell at all. We should do a rain dance. |

Just rode 25 miles. Seems like I sweated more today than yesterday, go figure. The old kids song reworked. Maybe we need to do it as a mantra. ;-] Rain, rain, come this way, please stay at least a day. Rain, rain, come this way, please stay at least a day.
