Sustaining from alcohol for a month taylorvt
  May 19 2008 22:03

Okay, I need some advice. I am 23 and drinking on the weekends is a big part of my social life. This past weekend I went to visit a guy I am dating and we went out and enjoyed ourselves Fri and Sat. However, now I want to not drink at all for a month... until at least June 13.

The problem is all my friends drink all week (happy hours) and weekend!! Any advice on what to do/say? I will still go out w/ them, but I know they will look @ me like I am crazy if I tell them I am not drinking b/c I am dieting. They will tell me I don't need to lose weight. I want to do this just to see how much drinking affects my diet and to cleanse/detox for a month from drinking.

Anyone have a similar experience they can share?

Question for those of you who have done it: I am going to a winery w/ my best friend the last weekend in May. Will having one glass of wine there throw off the plan? I mean I know I won't gain from one glass, but is it okay?

That's up to you!  This is your plan to abstain, if you think it is ok to have a glass of wine, then do it.  If you want to know what will happen with absolutely no alcohol whatsoever for 30 days, then don't.

Personally, I think that drinking in moderation is good for you, especially wine.  Having a glass of wine at a winery with your best friend seems to me a prime example of enjoying alcohol in moderation and at special occasions.

I believe beer is the enemy.  I have found that having "stronger" drinks such as:

1. vodka tonic w/ lime

2. dirty martini (which covers your salt craving)

3. diet & rum w/ lime or lemon

4. gin & tonic

will keep your hand full because these aren't gulping drinks and will also do the trick if your goal is to achieve a buzz. I also find that drinking this way, if you must drink, also saves money. You'll "drink" less and achieve the same effects without the downfalls of beer or sugary drinks.
