Apples! Favorite types! josielynn
  Apr 02 2008 17:45
So I'm just now starting to experiment with apples.  As a kid my family bought Red Delicious and only Red Delicious.  I think they have a nasty aftertaste.

When I got to college my roommate got me into Golden Delicious, which had a sweeter flavor, but were less firm.

A couple months ago a friend had me try the honey crisp, and they were firm and sweet, but not around often.

So now I'm on a quest to find the best tasting apple!  I just tried a Braeburn and I didn't like it.  It was too mealy for my tastes.  Yesterday I tried a Fuji and it is by far my favorite so far.  I still have a Jazz and a Rome at home to try.  I don't like Granny Smiths at all, they're too sour.

Basically, I want to know what everyone's favorite apple is and why.  Possibly help me along on my journey to find the best apple ever grown :)

Really?  I could have sworn I saw some earlier - oh well, I'll try them in October then!

Your grocery store might stock them out of season.  I've never seen them except for in October, though!  And even then, EXPENSIVE!  We got some from a local farmer's market, though, and they were wonderful.

gala and jazz are really good. and there's a new apple called sonya, I think it's a mix of gala and red delicious

My faves are fuji and yellow transparent. My latest least fave is empire- maybe I just got a bad bag last week but they don't keep. It would probably be a good cooking apple as it is very soft.

GALA!!!

I love fuji and granny smith. Apples have to be crispy for me...

Fuji and Gala are my favorites.  I eat at least one apple a day (with breakfast), and it's usually always one of these.

I love Fuji's because they are sweet. Pink Lady's are my second favorite apple

Granny Smith, Fuji, Gala, and Pink Lady's!

I just got some Spartan apples the other day.  They are pretty good too.

I dislike red delicious.  Yuck!

Gala, Fuji and I just discovered Pink Lady - very crisp and firm.  I don't like mushy apples.  Jonagold and Braeburn are all right for baking pies and Apple Crisp, not eating raw

Braeburns are actually my favorite.  They are just the right amount of sour and sweet for me and are always very crisp & juicy.  If I shop at the national grocery store they aren't as good, so maybe the local grocery here just has a good supplier that gets them in fresher.

Another vote for Pink Lady.  I eat them every day and never get fed up with them.  Sweet, juicy and crisp.  My rabbits love them too.

Fresh McIntosh apples are my favorite. I think they have the perfect balance between sweet and tart.

I love apples, but to really get a good apple you have to buy them in season. Old-fashioned macintosh can be fantastic in October, but this time of year I find they are less crisp and tangy than they should be and instead are more soft and sugary. Anything picked fresh off the tree is good in my opinion, except for red delicious (I agree with you, they aren't very good apples, and tend to get really mushy and grainy). Cortland can be nice, and gala, but once again, it depends on the season and the batch you buy.

Fuji!  The golden and red delicious apples disgust me =/

#37 perfectpanda Apr 04 2008 22:47

My family always got Red Delicious too.

I really like Fuji and Gala :]

I love Empire apples! They are so crunchy and have a really nice apple taste (if that makes any sense). I love apples! But if I can't get Empire then definitely Pink Lady!

Fuji! Nice and juicy!

Honeycrisp are the most awesome -- I never liked apples before, but those are great.  I was buying them in MD up until Feb -- but they are expensive.  Now, I'm eating the baby Galas that are available in the bags, tiny little things, especially compared to the Honeycrisp.
