Hi everyone. My name is Maria and I also happened to come across this website. I am 33 yrs old and I have been struggling with my weight since I've had my kids. I just started really watching what I eat a month ago and have lost 12 pounds (8 of those lbs I had gained when I was on vacation this past december). I just signed up thru this program and weighed in at 151 lbs. My goal is to lose another 25-28 lbs. I am hoping that by keeping track of my calories thru here will help me lose the weight. I also hope that I can get some tips on eating healthy. Right now I am getting bored of what I am eating and am scared that I will start to weaken and start having the BAD foods again. I think right now I have great will power, but hope that with having some friends here will keep me motivated.

P.S. Congratulations to all of you who have lost some pounds by following this program. Keep it up!

This looks like a great group, I'm Erin and I need to loose about 80lbs. I just joined today. I love the calorie tracker, what at wonderful tool! I've struggled with getting motivated to loose weight ever since I college. Now my husband and I want children and I need to loose the weight so my body will be strong and normal. I'd love to join your group!

Well looks like I found the right place to be.  Losing weight is a battle.  I have battled with my ill will to diet for about ten years now. I've had some good dieting episodes and plenty of times when I basically ending up in the same place, and thats where I am now.  222lbs and without the will to lose anything.  Don't get me wrong, I do want to be smaller and I start everyday off right, but I can't seem to grab hold to this diet thing for nothing this time around.  I very much need motivation to be my lover at this point.  I need to be motivated, inspired, or something.  The good thing is that I know I need to lose weight. The not so good thing is, I can't seem to get it right.  I NEED to be in your group.

Lourdes - You are such a sweetheart! Thank YOU for joining this group! Smile

Welcome Maria, Erin, and Destn!

Maria - Thank-you for posting! One thing that is keeping me in a calorie deficit is that I enjoy all of the foods that are in my food regimen. Since I am not a professional healthy eater yet, I give myself quite a bit of leeway. I substitute healthier choices that I enjoy ie: cheerios, baby dill pickles, popsicles, juice and peanut butter into my eating habits where fast food and soda used to be.

For me it is working best to not try and have a perfect eating plan overnight. As long as what I am eating this week is healthier than I used to be eating then I am that much closer to my goal without feeling deprived and thinking about food all day long. Small changes applied consistently add up to Big long term results!

Erin - We would love to have you in our group! What an awesome reason to get healthier! Have you met ColeyMoley? She too wants to get into better shape before having little ones.

Destn - We NEED you in our group. You definitely found the right place and we are lucky that you did! Smile

Diets don't work! Tongue out Eating healthier and maintaining a calorie deficit more days than not DOES work. We are all here to work with you while you achieve your goals once and for all!

"Self-Control Vs. Willpower" (taken directly from page 79 of the Mayo Clinic's "Healthy Weight for Everybody" book)

"You may think that you can reach a healthy weight if you just exert enough willpower. You just won't eat those foods that cause you to gain weight. Unfortunately, this well-intentioned plan only sets you up to fail as your willpower inevitably cracks. So what's the fix? Admit that willpower doesn't work, and focus instead on self-control.

Think of it this way. Say that before you start your weight program, you know that you have a terrible sweet tooth. You can approach the problem in two ways.

One is to figure out how to fit occasional sweets into you diet without destroying your overall plan. Two is to tell yourself you'll avoid sweets entirely -- although you'll continue to buy sweets so others can enjoy them. If you choose the second approach, you'll have to exert tremendous willpower. You'll likely feel deprived when you can't have sweets, and deprivation can lead to binge eating. So tell yourself that you can eat small amounts of certain sweets. But what if, even then, you know that you can never eat just one small piece of cheesecake.

Here's a trick. Instead of using willpower to avoid the cheesecake, use self-control. What's the difference? Self-control is, "It's hard for me to control my eating of cheesecake, so I'm not going to keep it in the house, but I may have an occasional piece when I dine out." Willpower is, "I'm going to buy my favorite cheesecake, but I'm not going to eat it. I'll prove to myself how strong my willpower is." The first approach is sensible planning. The second may be torture. And because the lifestyle changes you make are supposed to be both healthy and pleasurable, why torture yourself?

Chances are, as your taste buds adapt to a new style of eating, cheesecake (or whatever your downfall is) will loosen its grip on you and won't taste as good as it once did. Barring that, look for a recipe for a low-fat, low-sugar version of your favorite treat, and indulge in small portions on occasion. Or, cut off a small piece for yourself and give away the rest so that you won't be tempted to eat more. You'll be surprised to discover that just knowing it's all right to allow yourelf a treat now and then can make it easier to say no."

I look forward to seeing you all meet your goals!

Hi everyone... it has been pretty quiet around here lately... how is everyone doing?? I have to report although I've been away for quite some time I am happy to report that at least I've been able to maintain my weight... Even though I'm looking to loose it, at least I'm not gaining it.

Glad to be back!

God Bless!

Lourdes

God Bless you all and you are all amazing.

I think I am going to pop if I don't loose this weight. I started at 207 lbs a month ago and I have seemingly stopped losing weight. I am working out and watching everything I eat to the point I am miserable. I now weigh 194 lbs and it is not happening fast enough. I need support and for someone to understand and not get mad at me when I take a day off from the gym. It says here to eat 1800 cals a day but that seems extreme to me. I try not to eat more than 1,000. Hope to hear from some of you ladies.

first, give yourself a break!  you can't change over night and/or see results overnight.  it took time to gain all that weight and it will take time to take it off.  your body is probably in shock and trying to figure out what the hell is going on!  try not to look at it as 'losing weight,' but rather changing your lifestyle.  if it is only about losing weight you will very likely gain it back.  be proud of your everyday accomplishments and only look forward.  imagine the new you and lifestyle and set goals---not just weight goals, but exercise goals etc.  this MUST be a lifestyle change, and in life you are not perfect everyday.  lastly, YOU ARE PROBABLY NOT EATING ENOUGH if you are only consuming 1000 cals and working out!  your body is starving and instead of burning fat, it is burning muscle.  it thinks it needs to store fat because you are fueling your body enough.  I suggest consulting with a dietician and getting your resting metabolic rate  tested.

it can be done.  I have lost over 75 lbs in the last year, 100 lbs in the last 2 years.  I recently have plateaued again with my weight (195 lbs), but instead of being frustrated by not seeing the scale move, I have focused on my new goal of running and seeing inches lost (I measure myself x1/month)  I know the scale will eventually start moving again, but I am not about to give up just because some lilttle needle isn't moving fast enough.  if I keep doing with I know is best for my body, the rest will come.  by any means I am not an expert.  2 years ago I could hardly walk a mile without feeling like I was dying.  last sunday i ran my first 5K marathon!  I would have never imagined I could run that far or long without stopping and like it!  One of my favorite quotes is "I never regret it when I do it, I only regret it when i don't."  Have I had bad, really bad days, YES!  Have I gone long periods of not execising or hating every minute of it, YES!  have I regretted I allowed myself to get so fat, YES!  Have I resented my loved ones for not honestly telling me how fat I was, YES!  Have I resented that I have to try so hard and others don't have the struggle, hell YES!  Have I regretted any of it, NO!  because that is how I have learned.  what has made the difference for me:

-I keep challenging myself (whether it is with a new workout goal like trainging for a 5K or making it through the day without snacking on any of the hidden food traps at work)

-I give myself no other option (this is my new life and it will always be challenging.  maybe not always this hard, but something I will always work on)

-I decided this is it and my decision is firm!

-I am doing this for myself and NO ONE else!

-I deserve to be the best me!

-I know how crappy it feels to be the 'fat' me and my current daily struggles aren't 1/2 as bad as that

-I allow my a few 'slip up' days here and there, and then get over it!

I say all this with a very kind heart.  i still have 30 or more pounds to lose and I know they will be my toughest 30.  but at least I am living the life I was meant to live instead of hiding inside that fat suit.  just don't give up.  it's not simple, it's not easy, but YOU CAN DO IT!

Hi!  I'm new as well and would love to meet buddies for mutual support! I'm 27 and want to lose about 50 lbs.

Hello all!  well, it's my second day making right food choices.  I can't believe I haven't lost the 70lbs. yet!!  :o)  instead of trying to lose it all just over the summer, I'm going to give myself a year this time and lose it nice and slow.  I know it's going to be hard, but I really want to lose it before I turn 35.. so here we go!!  Reading your enteries really helps.  Thanks ladies!

You definately need to consume more calories or you will continue to not lose! Your body doesn't have enough calories to burn, so it's storing everything you eat. You should be eating closer to 1500-1600 a day if you want to lose weight. I think if you eat 1800 you might maintain. Right not you're not eating enough to allow your body to actually burn the fat and lose weight.

Also, if you don't already, take your body measurements and start recording that on a weekly or monthly basis instead of paying too much attention to the scale. Weight plateaus will happen, but that doesn't mean you can't still lose inches!

Good luck!

I'm 28 and at my highest weight of 200. My goal is to lose 60 pounds, but I'd be happy with 25 by the end of the year!

I just posted a journal entry about my weight-loss strategy and goals.

Good luck to everyone!

Hello Everyone! Glad you are here! Here you will find the support you need in order to reach your goals... I am sorry but I have to quote "Meet the Robinsons" movie... "KEEP MOVING FORWARD" and it will get you where you want & need to be... well at least it helps me A LOT.

God Bless!

Lost 6 pounds this week! YAY.
I think it's going to get a lot harder, though, because my best friend is visiting from Australia for 2 months and it's like the worst combo of vacation/peer pressure. We always want to go out, try new foods, etc. I don't know how it's going to work - I'm going to be so tempted, but I've done pretty well so far. She's only been in town for 2 days, though. LOL. We'll see.

Hi everyone! I started using this site a few months ago, but have been resistant to blogging, not for a particular reason I have just always been shy about it.

I am 24, petite (5'3'') and have at least 50 pounds to lose.  I am starting law school in August and would have made a commitment to myself to start a new chapter in my life by eating right and working out (along with studying!!).

Any moral support would be much appreciated.
