I LOST WEIGHT ON VACATION! That does it! I simply MUST MUST MUST go on more three-day vacations to the coast! (giggle!) I stepped on the scale this morning with tremendous trepidation and Herculean hesitation and somber seriousness ... only to see that nifty red digital number go to ... (drumroll please).... 307.4 pounds. WHAT!?!? I got on and off three times, but my wonderful DH assured me the number stayed the same each time! (I rely on him since I refuse to wear glasses for the weigh-in since they ... well, weigh something!) WEIGHT LOSS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8. Starting weight: 369.0 Current weight: 307.4 Weight lost this week: 5.2 pounds Weight loss to date: 61.6 pounds Percentage of weight lost (of starting weight): 16.6 % Weeks of Dieting: 16 weeks Average Weekly Weight Loss: 3.85 pounds Special Comments: VACATION! (and TOM ended) I took THIS silly picture of myself using my wonderful DH's Mac yesterday afternoon ... since I wanted to show that my face is getting a little skinnier! (Hey, those 61.6 pounds had to come from somewhere, right?) Anyway, I am one happy camper this weekend ... WOO HOO!!! "AFTER" PICTURE ... DECEMBER 2007 (Less 61.6 pounds) =^..^= MOLLY |

OK Folks!! From out on the edge of believability! I am at 405 as of 12/6. I started out the year at something over 600 pounds. But I believe that, at one time, I was easlily 650+. My Goal weight is 275. But I don't think I will see that without getting the skin pulled!! I'm doing OK concidering the kind of program I am on. My main problem is, as I become much more active, not eating enough. Hard to believe but true. Everytime I have begun to plateau, a nice bump in cals has kick started the loss again.

Hi...new to this topic....
Started (again) Nov 3 at 313- not sure of my BMI then- but as of yesterday on work scale with scrubs on- even 300... with BMI of 48.4. Next goal is to break 300... Long term goal- get to 200.... Not sure of my bmi goal- just healthier I guess :).... I've been (at least during the week) eating less and moving more... cutting out fast food at lunch which is really hard since within walking distance of my work there's- KFC, Applebee's- Sizzler, Jack in the Box- Togos, Pizza Lovers and Kabuki Sushi...and a soon to be Asian Market that I'm been told has excellent chinese food...... All in the same parking lot! Then a short drive up the street there is McDonalds, Taco Bell and an Italian joint, Safeway and a soon to be Jamba Juice... sigh.... I've been saving money bringing my lunch to work which for convienience sake has been Lean Cuisines and So Be Leans... Started taking my mutts out for at least an hour walk- I'm trying to go 4 days a week...They could stand to lose a few pounds... Mollymouser--- cute orange tabby! I have a 17 pound orange/white male- Charlie...(He's not overweight- he's just a huge cat!) I'm only a couple hours north of you.. I would like to be added to the chart if I could... I know from my profile it appears I come and go- but this time I'm serious about getting down to 200 for now and then perhaps 180... whatever a size 16 is! (smile) |

mollymouser: CONGRATS! You broke a plateau -- I think it's possible, and this is only my opinion, but I don't think you're eating enough! I started out at 319lbs and I'm down to 260lbs still eating an average of 1829 calories per day. Is it possible that you ate more on vacation and your body was more willing to let the fat go when it realized it wasn't starving? Just a thought; I could be wrong! :) |

I started at 340 back in May '07. I'm down to 240 now. I eat 1350-1500 calories 5 days a week. The other two days are around 2000 (I try to zig zag a little bit) I walk 4 miles a day OR 35 mins on the elliptical. I try to do this pretty much every day (though grad school gets in the way). It's nice to meet you guys! When i first started here- I remember thinking that I was one of the Biggest people here. It's nice to see a thread like this. It's important that people support each other. Especially those of us who are in it for the looong haul.

Original Post by j3nn_dot_net: 1829? But you are exercising, right? Right now, I really am not allowed to exercise, so my lifestyle is definitely pretty sedentary. Once I can really start exercising, my plan is to increase my eating.... but I will do that sooner once a hard plateau hits... that's for sure. My DH doesn't think I've really hit a plateau yet, he thinks last week's 1.8 pound loss was because of my TOM and normal fluctuation ... and this week's 5.2 pound loss is just things evening out. Who knows. My weekly average is still 3.85 pounds per week ... and slowly going down ... (My biggest problem right now is that I am an over-achiever who wants to speed things up ... I just need to learn to be patient!) I asked my DH if I ate more on vacation than I thought, and he thinks I ate too little (as exhibited by some serious blood sugar LOWS) in light of the walking I was doing. If anything, he thinks I underate on my vacation ... so who knows? I think I will just see what happens over the next few weeks or so ... I've got 8 pounds to lose to drop below 300 and I am DETERMINED to see that happen!!! If I go 2 weeks with no weight loss, I will increase my calories and see what happens. So far, that hasn't happened... and the weeks with little/no loss all seem to hit about 7-10 days before my TOM (pre-period water retention) ... there's a definite cyclical pattern there. Thanks for your assistance! =^..^= MOLLY! |

"1829? But you are exercising, right?"
mollymouser: yes, I exercise. I currently do 3 or 4 days a week of cardio for 15 to 60 minutes at a time, never the same amount of anything and 3 days of strength training but I don't always get as much cardio as I plan to. I am also planning to take it slow, I don't want to lose it too fast. My goal is to lose .5lb to 2lbs per week and if it takes 5 years to get to my goal, that's ok. I made this a lifestyle and I can't subsist on 1200 to 1500 calories a day, it makes me irritable, even eating wholesome foods. So 1829 is what it comes out to with calorie cycling, I eat a different amount each day. Sun: 1800 Mon: 2000 Tue: 1400 Wed: 2800 Thu: 1200 Fri: 1500 Sat: 2100 Every 2 weeks I take a "free day" and eat anything I want, as much as I want (talking 4000 or 5000 calories) without counting and get right back to normal the next day. I believe that calorie cycling gives wiggle room and mimics real life. The theory behind zigzagging is that it keeps your metabolism guessing so it never gets used to one thing or another and keeps you out of "starvation mode" -- under-eating slows your metabolism down dramatically. The idea is to keep it burning hot like you would with a furnace; you don't want it to slow down to a smolder. I believe that people should eat at or close to their target goal weight maintenance calories so there's no major transition from losing to maintenance and then it becomes a lifestyle. I started out eating only 1500 calories a day for the first 2 weeks of my weight loss journey and then realized it wasn't enough, especially after all the research I did about losing weight and the metabolism. I've been eating 1829 on average, plus cheat days for 6 months now and I'm down 60lbs so far, but to be honest, I didn't start exercising at least 3-4 days a week until the past month or 2. I am gradually adding more and more and actually liking it! lol Some people start out eating very low calories, the weight comes off fast, and then they hit a plateau and have nowhere to go because their body is already hanging onto as much fat as possible because it "thinks" it is being starved and they can't go any lower than 1200 calories without risking malnutrition and other bad side effects. I originally set out to lose 1lb a week and I've been losing about 2.5lbs a week on average for 6 months. I expect it to slow down drastically in the near future and that's alright. I'm going to increase my cardio to 6 or 7 days a week eventually, but I'm not going to lower my calories. There's no reason to. I'll just be taking in about the right amount of calories to maintain my goal weight -- it would be impossible to gain weight from eating the calories to maintain my ideal goal weight. Actually, 1829 calories is still LESS than my target goal weight maintenance calories lol. My goal is to weigh 150, 135lbs eventually, and do an hour of intense cardio 6 or 7 days a week and continue strength training. I'm a numbers addict and I use several formulas to come up with calorie estimates for my current and future weight and activity level -- my calculations have been very accurate so far. I also don't look at my losses on a daily or weekly basis, I look at the whole month and I'm always less than the month before. Some weeks, like this week, I gain a few pounds and then it goes back down, plus more the week after. It's TOM for me and I'm up 3lbs this week, lost 1 so far and I'm sure the other 2 will drop in a few days. I retain water like crazy! Anyway, my weight fluctuates all the time but when I look at 30 days prior, it's always 8 or 10lbs less, even if I go 2 or 3 weeks without losing an ounce lol. It balances out and that's all that matters to me. I practice moderation, balance, and indulgence once in awhile. Losing weight is a balancing act, not an exact science. The best we can do is try to level it all out over time and not be too hard on ourselves. Have you checked out: http://walking.about.com/cs/calories/l/blcalcalc.htm My philosophy and means don't work for everybody, nor do they appeal to everyone but this is what is working for me and I hope everybody is satisfied with their diet and results. I love the way I'm doing it because I can do this for the rest of my life. I'm done trying to lose weight in ways that deprive and stress me. This is the first time that I ever stuck with a weight loss plan for more than a few days because it doesn't feel like a typical diet to me -- it just feels like what "lifelong thin people" do by balancing life and great food. I wish I had realized it sooner! :) |

j3nn ... thanks for the detailed explanation ... that's pretty cool and I am glad it works for you. Unfortunately, I can't have "free" days and I can't alter my daily calories very much or I can't keep my insulin dosages and blood sugar balanced. I have about a 200-calorie range of "wiggle room" before my diabetes meds get out of whack (too low / too high) ... and those 200 calories need to either be all protein, a blend of protein/carbs, or at least very low glycemic carbs. So, for now, I can't really zig zag unless I just wanted to have lean protein "binges" ... because I need to seriously limit my ingested cholesterol and saturated fats for cholesterol and triglyceride reasons. Somehow, being able to eat all the plain egg whites I want on a designated "free" day just doesn't seem all that exciting, ya know? (grin) =^..^= MOLLY |

Molly, I understand. It doesn't work for everybody. Have you considered consulting a dietitian about the amount of calories or diet plan you should follow for your weight and medical needs? I'm just wondering if what you're doing is a bit aggressive because typically people (especially women) that weigh much less than us; around 150-165 lbs eat 1200 to 1500 calories to lose 1lb a week or so. If you start out at the bare minimum, there's nowhere to go when you do get to lower weights if you're already at the lowest and your metabolism slows down because of it. From what I read, you seem determined to make it come off faster than .5 or 1lb a week, so I imagine you wouldn't like the gradual loss approach I take lol. I'm a turtle, what can I say! hehe |

Original Post by j3nn_dot_net:
Yeppers, a registered dietician, my primary care physician, and my endocrinologist. Everyone's primary concern has been my losing weight so as to get my previously poorly-controlled diabetes (diabetic neuropathy, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure) ... under better control ... the sooner the better since I was having cardiac-related chest pains requiring hospitalization. At that point, I was taking insulin shots 4+ times a day, testing 8-10 times a day, and was getting seriously ill. At the last visit with my endocrinologist before I started this weight-loss adventure in August, her advice was clear ... either (1) find a healthy, highly-structured way to lose weight through portion control and calorie counting, (2) get gastric bypass surgery, or (3) go on a VLCD eating nothing but RX-prescribed shakes. I opted to try the eating healthy, portion-controlled approach, and decided that I would work my way down to 1500 calories a day. (Actually, it was 1800 the first 2 weeks, then 1700 for 2 weeks, then 1600 for 2 weeks, and then I settled at 1500 -- to give me (and my body) a chance to adjust to all these ... vegetables!) Because I really can't exercise much at this point, the docs suggested I start off with a 1300-calorie deficit per day (2800 BMR ... eating 1500) ... and to see if I was able to meet my nutritional needs and manage my blood sugars and meds on that. I was ... and started losing weight ... and as my BMR has shrunk (it is now 2500), my calorie deficit has shrunk slowly, as well ... it's now 1000-per-day (which should equate to a 2 pound per week loss.) My plan for now is to stick with the 1500 calories per day, and not go any lower (even when my BMR adjusts downward.) I realize this will naturally slow my weight loss, but I am OK with that. I just don't want to drop dead of a heart attack because I didn't do everything within my power (under doctor's supervision) to get my diabetes and cardiac issues under better control. So, for me, in some ways, time really was (and is) of the essence.... at least for these first 60 pounds. (My blood sugar is now under much better control, and my cholesterol is greatly improved ... but my triglycerides are still 3 times what they should be, and I still am taking insulin shots.) My starting weight was 369 with a BMI of 56.1 ... and I am currently 307.4 with a BMI of 46.7. When I've lost 100 pounds and hit 269, my BMI will be 40.9 .... still high, but a significant improvement. And I'd really love to be 249 (120 pound weight loss) with a BMI of 37.9 ... out of the 40s and into the 30s! As to how quickly this occurs .... I leave that in the hands of the Lord. After all, I can't control the scale or my metabolism ... I can only control what I eat, how often I eat it, what vitamins I take, how much fiber I get, how much water I drink, and how disciplined that I am. (110 days of dieting, and no "cheat days" so far!) I do think that those of us with BMIs over 40-45 or so should definitely be getting medical/dietician advice/supervision in connection with our weight loss -- especially if we have any underlying medical issues or health concerns ... and ALWAYS if we have more than a 1000 calorie per day deficit... it just makes sense. =^..^= MOLLY |

Hi all. I just now found this thread. Where am I at? 189 Where I'm coming from? I started out at 320lbs. on Jan. 8, 2007. I'd lost my 100th lb. in just over 6 months with no pills, no eating disorders, and no surgery. I've now lost 131 lbs. Where am I going? 140..working my way there very slowly these days but that's my ultimate goal. How am I doing? Great! Thanks for asking. =) |
