'Man sheds 80 pounds while eating at McDonalds'

Man sheds 80 pounds eating at McDonald's The Associated Press

QUINTON, Va. --

A Virginia man lost about 80 pounds in six months by eating nearly every meal at McDonald's.

Not Big Macs, french fries and chocolate shakes. Mostly salads, wraps and apple dippers without the caramel sauce.

Chris Coleson tipped the scales at 278 pounds in December. The 5-foot-8 Coleson now weighs 199 pounds and his waist size has dropped from 50 to 36.

The 42-year-old businessman from Quinton says he chose McDonald's because it's convenient.

His inspiration came from his two children and from the story of a blind war veteran who rode a tandem bicycle cross-country.

Coleson says his goal is to get back to the 185 pounds he weighed when he married Tricia Summer. Their 10th anniversary is Saturday.

***So is he going to be the new spokesman rather than the silly clown, Ronald McDonald?***

Some of you guys seem like you've had way too much sugar or caffeine.

I'm not surprised about this whole thing.  Not long after Super-Size Me came out there was an article in the local newspaper of a woman who lost thirty pounds after eating at McDonalds regularly.

The thing with Super-Size Me is that guy was a strict vegan.  If you paid attention to what he ate before he started eating at McDonalds you'd probably get pretty sick from eating a bunch of crap, too.  However, if you grow up on said crap, you're just fine and dandy chowing down on that Snack Wrap.

There is nothing like a reformed fat person, praise the low-carb!

The gentleman in the article lost a large amount of weight and the slamming begins because he didn't do it the "right" way. We don't know this man's entire lifestyle only a small snippet. Perhaps now that he has lost a lot of weight he'll be more inclined to see his doctor for the needed blood work. How many of us needed to find out we were Type II Diabetics before we saw the "light"? Were your cholesterol levels high enough to clog your kitchen drain before you chose different foods and perhaps a tad bit of exercise?

At times I think that those of us on our journey's to become healthier forget that we all started somewhere and that we didn't have all of the information that would work for us when we did. Let's be a tad bit kinder to one another on this journey because it's hard enough to do it without those who should have more empathy because they've been there, belittling the effort.

well said bigmommah... but I think you're forgetting that this man probably did this as a publicity stunt (jared ring a bell?) and although he did figure out his method of losing weight and lost it... we shouldn't follow his lead.  Like Jared, he probably restricted his calories to an unhealthy amount and is going to have a hard time maintaining on this diet.  But, to each their own.

A calorie is a calorie, I, myself, have gone through phases where I have dieted on very average foods ie JUNK. It is possible.

I'm not condoning that everyone diets on junk food though, it's always better to consume nutritious food.

Ick. I hate McDonald's.

I honestly think that he could have done that at home... and saved himself a boatload of money.

According to CC, my recommended daily calorie intake is 1750.  But to be honest, now that I'm trying to restrict myself to clean and simple foods like fresh fruits, lean meats, etc, and cut out the processed sweets and greasy sauces, it is actually not easy to eat 1750 in a day unless I'm eating when I'm not even hungry.

This is basically what I was trying to get across the other day.......the slamming that goes on because the guy didn't do it the "right way".  I don't know...it just bothers me that everybody judges so harshly.

Oh, and Playergirl you asked who I am......I am a 38 year old mother of 2 trying to lose my last 5 pounds.

oi :( mcdonalds is the hardest to stay away from

amilagirl I do not care who YoU are.  I really don't.  Just the fact you called a group of people you do not know beyond the internet "snobs", rubbed me the wrong way.

So, I am a 38 - soon two be 39 - mother of two, maintainng;  That would give me no right to call you a "loser".

I just don't care about YoU or this anymore.

Sorry for speaking my mind.  I am done - you all can continue.

Whoa.  Watch out!

I'm a loser as well amilagirl =)  Power to the losers!

There is a lot of snobbery among certain groups on calorie-count. Probably the worst are the clean eating pushers who are not content to "eat clean" themselves but feel compelled to try to push the idea that anything processed (even smoked!) is evil and should be avoided by everyone. Meh, I've lost good weight despite the occasional BLT , wurst, or smoked pork loin sandwich.

I say kudos to this guy for making good choices at McDonalds. I eat there regularly and get the salads and even an occasional happy meal.  My partner is a regular fast food junkie so I have 1 or 2 items at each place that is a good dieting choice for me.

Too much sodium is really only a problem for those with hypertension. The Center for Science in the Public Interest is trying to get sodium levels lowered not because sodium is bad for the general public but because so many people in the general public don't know they have hypertension. It does cause water retention but I've never seen the reason for panic at such anyway because the weight I'm trying to lose is fat, not water, if I'm lugging around an extra 10lb worth of water, so what.
ROFL. Anyone taking advice on eating habits from Ol Fat Ass needs to wonder why he is desparately looking for someone to blame his problems on. Supersize Me, like the rest of his so called documentaries, is full of misinformation. His credibility is totally shot.

I eat at McDonald's 2 or 3 times a month. Love Big Macs, and they have the best fries around.

If you eat at McDonalds and eat 4000 calories a day, you are gonna be fat.

If you don't eat at McDonalds and eat 4000 calories a day, you are gonna be fat.

Now, McDonalds is not exactly the healthiest place to eat, nor is Subway, but both are ok in moderation, and as long as they fit into your menu.

My only concern would be that disseminating this kind of story - a publicity stunt most likely - has the potential to influence some people's choices who may not know any better.

If you read no further, you might conclude it's a good idea to eat at McDonald's for every meal if you are trying to lose weight. Now, all of us HERE know that that only makes sense if you make good choices, regardless of where you choose to eat, but it seems like there is a huge proportion of people who are seriously lacking in basic nutrition information and skills. It would be so much better if the press did not focus on sensationalizing anolmolies, but I guess "Washington woman loses 100 lbs by making healthy choices and exercising more!" would not sell newspapers.

Besides that, I can't help but wonder...why would anyone buy "apple dipper without the caramel sauce"? Isn't that just an apple?? Wouldn't it make more sense to shop at a grocery store and buy some apples? I mean I understand once in a while, when you are stuck with no lunch and all the grocery stores are closed because it's National Grocery Worker's Day or something, but every meal?? That just seems foolish.

Well said.  But the apple with the caramel sauce is 99 calories, so who's going to skip up the caramel??  Point is- low fat salad dressing, low fat caramel and any other type of low fat crap they sell is not healthy.  Period.  If a person is trying to lose weight and get healthy, McDonalds should not be in the consideration of your plan.
