| Losing the Will to Work Out | ||
| May 21 2008 20:32 | ||
Hi everyone- I am Melanie, from Abilene, TX. I have lost 21.8 lbs since February 10th- I wanted to lose the weight slowly- I started at 151- and weighed in at 129.2 last Friday- My problem is I am really losing the will to exercise- Not one of my friends will work out with me, the classes at the local gym are not convenient for me- and I am really getting bummed. I was walking 3 miles 5-6 days a week at the local track- then 3-4 days a week doing weights and stairs, stuff like that. Now it is getting up to 95 degrees during the time of day I can go during the week- and I have no will power when I am at home to stay on the Gazelle.
Any advice~~~~ ideas? I thought about the Curves program here, but have not met anyone who has any experience with it.
My next step will bea personal trainer at $25 per hour- OUCH!!!!
My hubby gets back from overseas soon and I want so much for him to be amazed when he sees me!!!! (even though he has told me this whole time that I was perfect the way I was- and he loves me no matter what!!!~~~~)

I have a gazelle too! I used to use it all the time, I have a gym membership now instead. Motivation to stay on the gazelle - use the gazelle while watching your favorite TV program. Stay on until the program's over. My gym has a free personal training session once a month. Once a month is perfect for me to get motivated. They help me develop new workout every month. I get bored working out easily, and I have a hard time doing it if I'm bored - it can be such a chore. The best thing for me is to change my routine all the time, do something different every day, and work towards specific goals. Or you can treat yourself to a new workout dvd - I find new stuff always more motivating and fun. |

I've heard the Jillian Michaels 30 minute burn is amazing. I'm going to see if I can find it tomorrow, and if so, buy it! I so understand about losing motivation, I haven't lifted weights for about a month and I told myself this morning that today would be the day I start again. BUT, I slept in, had to work on the strawberry plants, then I planted some flowers, went to pick up my son from school, have a meeting at the school in an hour (have time now but don't want to get sweaty and have to reshower before the meeting). The good news is after I get home and get the kids into bed, I have the time. Now the challenge will be to try to not dream up an excuse... Congrats btw on your awesome weight loss. I'd be up for being a motivational buddy if you're interested. I need someone who'll say "you have no excuses- why haven't you done it and when will you do it" |

Hi TMCK99 & Queen Media!!! Thanks so much for the ideas!!! It is nice to hear it coming from someone else- cause I try to ignore that inner voice that says the same thing!!! QueenMedia~~~ It sure would be nice to have someone to help get the motivation- I would love to have you as a motivational buddy!! Let me know how the Jillian Michael DVD goes. I did buy the Joey Atlas Thigh, Butt and Hip videos- and did those religiously for a few weeks- but I am thinking I also need something that gets me moving a bit more!!!! So, is there ccertain times you prefer to get online? I try to get the website up all day at work- just so I have no excuse not to log a little snack!!

Hey Mel, I hope the DVD thing works for me- I feel like I might be starting it half defeated because I know myself, and I have a hard time believing me when I try to convince myself that I can do it and stick with it! I got an exercise ball for my birthday and was doing an abs workout from my Womens Health magazine, but I only stuck with that for maybe a month and 1/2. What works really well for me is my recumbent bike. I site down and could (and do) bike for hours while I surf the 'net, read, or watch tv. Were it not for the bike, I probably would be doing NO exercise! lol I'm online most mornings, usually 7-11 central give or take. Not 4 hours straight, mind you, but in that time frame. You can PM me anytime. I'll kick your butt if you'll kick mine. Waaait...that didn't sound quite right... but you know what I mean! :) Steph |

Congrats on your weight loss! It sounds like you've done an awesome job!!! I do get bored often with things I do & i don't really have any friends that can work out with me either. Some different things I do just to change it up are Cycling, Swimming & Hiking. It can really change things up if you do something off your normal routine just one day out of the week. Good luck! |

$25/hr for a personal trainer is super cheap. Most PT's cost around $50 an hour... mine is $60! That's why I only see her every few weeks for a switch up. Curves may get you motivated again since it's a supportive group atmosphere but it's not the most efficient workout you could do, since it's the same routine every day and your body will get used to it quickly. I'm a former Curves member and I gave it up after a year because it was so repetitive (even the MUSIC was the same every day) and I didn't really like a few of the girls who worked there. You can't avoid them! |

| I totally have the same problem. I used to get so mad if I couldn't work out and now I am trying to find excuses to not work out. I just have to push myself and remember how awesome it feels once I am done. You can do it!!! | ||

I used to live in Abilene 3 years ago and was a member at Gold's gym. I really enjoyed their pilates and body pump type classes. I would suggest though that you find something that you enjoy doing and do that. Switching up your routine is also a great way to keep your body guessing and enjoy yourself more.
Goodluck! you can do this! |

Yeah, doing the same workout over and over gets boring. Change it up. Do different exercises, maybe even focus on different muscles. Vary the intensity, duration, repetitions, etc. If you can, try to make a game out of it. |

| Make a date with yourself, everyday, same time if possible. You wouldn't skip an important meeting, so don't skip your workout. It works for me when I do it. I may not want to do it, but I do it. I also tell a friend to ask me the next day if I did my workout the day before. It helps, because the times where I said I would and I didn't, I felt bad having to tell them I skipped my workout. | ||

Thank you so much everyone for their great advice and ideas!! I appreciate it so much!! I am seeing that a lot of my problem is my repetitive routines when it comes to exercise- so I will be heading to the store this weekend and getting weights and a few DVDs to help change it up some!!! AGAIN-THANKS EVERYONE!! |

I would stay away from Curves. I tried it for 3 months - faithfully went, followed their exercise program and lost no pounds, no inches. (I think) Curves works for sedentary women who have a lot to lose. You have to sign a 1 year contract, plus start up fee (varies - they are always having specials). The club I joined was gracious about letting me 'buy out' my membership after three months but I have read about bad experiences getting out of the contract. The Curves concept makes little sense (to me) - doing the same exercises - forever - just doesn't make sense. The staff will tell you to do more reps, faster but I lost form and was concerned about certain repetitive use injuries - shoulder, elbow - that seemed very likely if I had continued. When I tried to amp up the cardio on the 'rest' stations (30 seconds between machines) the staff poo-pooed that. The cardio AND strength work is suppose to happen in the 45 second pump on the hydralyic exercise machine. I am fairly active and have decent muscle density and strength. I did not change my eating habits which were fairly average healthy but plentiful. I wanted Curves to work because it was convenient (close to home) and I hoped the cash outlay would help build structure in my routine. Sigh. |

Original Post by queenmedia: Yup- I have 6 Jilliam Michaels videos....Bes 1/2 hour workout ever, and she is highly motivational. My favorite so far it "The biggest winner-Frontside". I have not done the cardio kickboxing yet though, so that may change. As for motivation-there is no easy answer. But once you get into a routine, stick with it. Vary your activities/videos so you don't get bored, and don't reach a physical plateau. Best of Luck! |
