I was wondering. I used to drink 2 percent and recently switched to 1 percent. I guess I don't mind that much about the blander taste, but I feel like I should eventually be going to fat free. Does it make that big a difference? Is it worth it?

I don't think theres any point drinkinking fat free - theres still calories in it, and you loose most of the nutrients you get in semi-skimmed etc. I'd just stick in the middle, and drink it moderately.

Yes, it's worth it. Milk has saturated fat in it, which increases your unhealthy (LDL and VLDL) cholesterol. The less saturated fat you get, in general, the more your heart and cardiac system will thank you. :) Plus, you consume less calories drinking 1 cup of fat-free milk than you get drinking 1 cup of 2% milk.

I think so.  I switched to skim years ago, and really don't taste a difference except that whole milk is way too rich for me now.

I think skim milk is an excellent addition to most weight loss programs.  Especially in protein smoothies, and on my cereal!! Laughing

I'm all for soy milk. Tastes much better than fat free milk. YUCK!

I have always loved skim milk...it is much colder and more refreshing!  I like 2% in my tea though :-)

I go with 0%, mostly because ... "is it worth it for the calories?" if there's any difference in calories at all, it's worth it to me. AND I love cows, they are my favorite animal, and they are definately the most tortured and mistreated animals and their lives are purely horrific, FOR WHAT?! CEREAL?! COOKIES?! I could literally have WATER in my cereal just for that, and tell you what, I don't notice a difference ^.~

*chants* RICE MILK! RICE MILK! Although that's pretty fatty too, isn't it? It's well tasty though....

I'd much rather have soy/rice/oat milk than fat free milk. Ewwww! Puddle!!

How much milk do you drink in a day? If it's not more than 8-12 oz, and you prefer the taste of 1-2% milk, you might be happier sticking with that.

Personally, I keep a small carton of whole milk for coffee, and a bigger carton of 2% for when I have cereal. Other than that, I don't drink milk as a beverage, so I think it's worth the tradeoff for me.

I'm with homodachi.... If you're not drinking gallons of milk then the difference between 1% and 2% won't make a big difference to your fat intake.  Go with the one you prefer.

I've been drinking skim milk for years.  When I first switched, the skim milk tasted a little watery to me but you get used to it.  I'd rather save the calories for other foods.

I used to drink full-fat whole milk back in the day when i was a kid...until one day i went to the doctor and he let me know i had high cholesterol... so i made the switch to skim milk... trust me you do get used to it after a while. now i can't even drink 2% without tasting that its too creamy for me!

It really depends on your genetic and your overall diet.  My husband and son drink tons of whole milk and it doesn't make them gain weight.

I'm lactose intolerant and so I'm drinking soy milk and getting other forms of dairy.

I do have a long history of eating lots of saturated fats and my cholesterol, blood pressure and whatnot have been great.  I'm sure I was eating 3x the recommended fat and cholesterol a day and my bad cholesterol was low and good cholesterol was high.  I'm cutting fats now because it's more economical;  I can eat more for the same amount of calories.

Actually the healthy nutrients are the same in all minus the fat.  So I would give Skim a try.  Try it for a week or 2 straight and then see if you like it.  IF not stick with the 1%.

I'm on the "worth the calories" side.

I tried to go from 2% down to 1%, and couldn't get used to it.  Like others have said, if you're only drinking 8-12 oz a day (and for me, it's 4-8 more often than not) than the difference in calories is minimal.  I'll take the fat and calories here and cut them eslewhere.

You could also try one of the milks that have come out that are fat free but taste like 2% milk.  I've switched the family over to the "Over the Moon" or "Simply Smart" brands ( which ever is on sale) and we love it.

Just another option as I don't care for skim milk at all.  I don't like the taste.
