Poptarts and cravings jperonto
  May 21 2008 19:21

Ok, I used to eat pop tarts all the time when I was a kid.  After eventually finding out how unhealthy they are for you, I started to steer clear from them.  I haven't touched them in years and was wondering if anyone had any pop tart alternatives that aren't so bad for you, or something that will satisfy my pop tart cravings.

Thanks!

Nature's Path makes a pop tart-like treat. I had them before... they're a good substitution: http://www.naturespath.com/products/snack_foods

(I think they have 200 cals per tart but at least they're made with better ingredients!)

I had a babysitter when I was very young that made a treat for me that I still love to this day. It's much healthier than a poptart, and it satisfies my sweet tooth.

It's called Chocolate Toast.

  1. Toast a piece or 2 of bread (preferably a whole grain)
  2. Immediately spread on some soft butter (I only use real butter)
  3. Sprinkle on a heaping teaspoon of Nestle Quik chocolate mix.
  4. Use the back of the spoon to spread out the Quik into the melted butter.
  • 2 pieces of light wheat bread, 70 cal for 2 slices
  • 1 tsp butter for each piece - 90 calories
  • 2 tablespoons of Quik are 60 calories

So if I eat 2 pieces and use a whopping 2 tablespoons of Quik (which would be too much) I would only have consumed 220 calories for the whole snack.

2 poptarts = 400-500 calories

Choc toast sounds yummy!  Do you eat poptarts for breakfast or as a snack?  Also what flavors do you like?  I liked the brown sugar ones, so for that you can substitute cinnamon toast (similar to choc toast, but with cinnamon, and splenda if desired).  Or maybe you could do peanut butter toast or a little bit of jam if you like the fruity pop tarts.

I think cravings are largely due to denying yourself something you want (usually things that are bad for you).  However, by eating a little bit of the bad thing and thus satisfying your cravings can prevent a binge!  Of course to satisfy it doesn't mean you have to go crazy and eat a whole box or something.  Get the low cal/low fat variety and just eat one, if the above tips don't work.

Scroll down the page a little and there called 'Strawberry Toaster Pops'

Amy's makes a toaster pastery which is similar to a pop-tart, its strawberry flavored and 150 calories. I have not tried them, but they look good and could be a great healthy alternative to regular poptarts (:

Oh Fuzzys, fresh cinnamon toast is so yummy too! I forgot about that.

There are so many varieties of jams and jellies and they taste so much better on a fresh piece of toast than any poptart ever tasted. Apricot perserves are one of my favorites.

I grew up on cinnamon toast!  My mom kept a shaker of cinnamon and sugar all the time.  I've had it recently, with light wholegrain toast and butter spray.  Not as great, but still good.

Along with being addicted to poptarts growing up (I two packs a day...no lie!!).  I was also addicted to eggo's, I put peanut butter on them and then sprinkled them quite heavily with cinnamon sugar!!!  One of my all time favorites!!  YUMMO!!

Today, eating healthier...when I crave my eggos, I buy the multi-grain ones, I use Smuckers, reduced fat natural PB and sprinkle with cinnamon and splenda!  Taste pretty much the same way!

definitely try amy's toaster pastries! I have the apple kind and the pizza kind and I think they both taste GREAT. The Apple one is great for a quick breakfast and the pizza one is delicious as a snack.

My children loved their pop tarts while they were growing up in Taiwan. Then they went to live in Switzerland and discovered warm waffles sprinkled with icing sugar (they sell them in the streets in winter time). I brought them pop tarts once when I visited and they both declared they just couldn't begin to understand how they could ever have loved that stuff! LOL The taste is so artificial it almost doesn't feel like food...

I guess it's just a matter of being used to a certain taste. Maybe you should try to eat a pop tart once again, and that would get rid of your craving? There are loads of good sweet foods that can do the trick without risk to your health. Like French toasts with honey, Nutella on warm toasts, croissant with apricot jam... If you eat just one piece, these are good snacks that won't make you fat. A croissant is 250 cals, 1 Tbsp apricot jam is 60. With a cup of black coffee and a plain yogurt, it's a perfect start to your day!  =)

i remember being like 13 (before being health conscious) and my friend and i would go buy a box of smore flavoured poptarts, a bag of gummi worms, a bag of chips and 2 quarts of chocolate milk and finish it ALL during a movie. he's one of those boys who can eat a house and not gain an ounce though. Yell

the smore poptarts were the only ones i ever liked, but omg they're sooo good.

Why don't you just have one/ Open up the pack and eat only one and share the other with a friend or put it away for another craving day.  My first graders are so sweet that they like to bring them to me, and I usually eat only one from the package and give my best behaved student the other to to a teacher.  Hope this helps.  You can still have certain things, but you just have to eat half of what you used to if it's something like poptarts.

When I am looking for a portable option that gives more a sense of the pocket of warm yummy fruit flavour inside, I will take a pita (preferably Food Doctor's mutli-seed and cereal pita bread), cut a small slit in the top, shove in a tablespoon of low calorie jam (making sure none squeezes out) and pop the lot into the toaster (1 piece approx. 180 calories). Of course, I recommend supervising the toasting process to make sure you don't clog the thing with any overflowing jam. My boyfriend shakes his head when I do this but it's easier than trying to quickly shove the jam in after it's already been toasted and the pita's piping hot. He's asked me to toast, fill with jam, then re-heat in the microwave but I think the microwave turns everything to mush. If we had a toaster oven, life would be so much easier! I digress..

Some other options could include low calorie wholegrain toast with a light smear of butter substitute and a sprinkle of splenda mixed with cinnamon (2 pieces approx. 100 calories). Or toast with a light smear of nutella or similar chocolate hazelnut spread (2 pieces approx. 150 calories).

Try one.  You may find you don't want more.

I used to eat Pop Tarts a couple of times a week.  A few days ago, my teenage son was eating one (He only eats the ones without frosting.  They are hard to find), and I asked him for a bite.  I spit it out, because it tasted AWFUL!  It was sticky, nasty, and overly sweet.

I certainly am not craving Pop Tarts now!
