| Weight Loss in the Summer | ||
| May 21 2008 02:43 | ||
| So I was talking to my nutritionist and we were discussing how people lose weight during the summer. I mentioned I still have about a lil less than 40 pounds to go and wasn't sure how my body is going to behave in the AZ heat. I still work out 4 days a week and take in about 1300 calories (trust me I did all the math but my body is happy with that cal range). I don't really go outside to work out (burn like a peach) so will be keeping to my inside the gym routine. Anyway, my nutritionist said she wasn't aware of any studies about people losing weight in different regions during the summer. Sooo I figured I would do a lil shout out and see if anyone else had some insight on this. |

| I also live in AZ! I always lose weight in the summer. When it starts getting really hot I usually lose my appetite and only want cool things like fruit and salad. This year I am determined not to gain the weight back! lol | ||

As long as I can go outside, I lose weight every summer. Problem is before this spring, I would take all summer to lose the weight then by Oct start putting it back on!!! I live here in Tucson and have gotten a headstart. Next week we start swimming 3x/week. |

Hey! I grew up in AZ (college now in Iowa). I always felt like summer was the time to lose weight. I also never felt that hungry, probably because I was always slurping down water. (dehydrate easily in that 115 heat, huh?) Anyway, I did read something at one point that said the heat does suppress the appetite, but I'm not sure if its because your body has to spend less energy to heat up? No idea... |

you got to really hydrate your self in the summer (i live in souther cali, so i know) and you got to workout heavy, not like most women i see... go for 8-15 reps, and you wont get big, you are female thats lacking the testostrone and going high reps cause inflammation to your muscles... so its just better to go heavy, and watch you micro and macros... |

in dublin ireland and winters are not fun here. its cold & dark, don't want to do anything. but the summer time, nights are long & bright, so i walk everywhere & go to the park. especially when its not raining, its like a treat & we all go wild here in the sun (when its here) fyi - im originally from los angeles, so big adjustment for me. |

Most people who live in areas with seasonal climate changes lose weight in the summer for two common reasons... 1. In the summer, people spend more time outdoors and are generally more active (because they know that once winter comes back they'll be stuck inside again). 2. In the warmer months, most people (women especially) show more skin (tank tops, shorts, etc) or are in a bathing suit on a regular basis. This makes them more body conscious and helps them stick to a diet with more resolve. |

damsell, don't minimize the physiological effects of short days/long nights and cold. we're designed by evolution to conserve energy in winter and to find a safe place to hide when it's dark. where i am, in the middle of winter, we get about eight hours of daylight and temperatures can be in the -20s for weeks at a stretch. right now, even though we're still a month away from the longest day of the year, it's daylight from 4:30am until almost 10pm. you're crazy if you think the effect of that change is purely psychological.
edited to add that i see you're from florida. have you always lived there? |

I grew up in Northern CA where we had cold winters but from Spring to Fall, we were very active. A lot of thin people there. Here in Tucson you can exercise outdoors year round, almost. We have cold days but not nearly the kind that keep people locked in. A lot of thin people here too. I briefly lived in the Midwest where the winters were long and bitter, the summers were really humid. I felt the summers were like blizzards where there were just days you couldn't go outside safely. A lot of fat people there, I blended right in. |
