Addicted to Cashews... clairesty
  May 20 2008 21:47

... They are the God of nuts as far as I'm concerned. Only problem is that I avoid them because the only bags I can find are 200g or more & if I buy 200g I'll eat 200g in one day - they're so moreish!

I did think of buying a big bag & dividing them up into portions. It's bad enough at the moment that my mum has bought some massive white choc cookies & other biscuits, without the cashews calling me from the kitchen. & I know myself well enough now to know I'll have 2-3 portions than one.

Anyways, first off whats a decent portion sizeof nuts? & can I freeze them?

1 ounce of nuts is generally considered a serving.  The calories range from 150 to 200 per serving depending on the nut.  Yes, you can freeze them, just make sure they're dry when you package them/put them away.  I have almonds that I keep in a black jar so I can't actually see them, so I only remember they're there when I'm packing my lunch in the morning.

i love almonds the way you love cashews :)  I only eat a half-ounce as a snack, though, because I'm at the point where I find that pretty filling.

Good luck!

yes, you can freeze any nut.  cashews are hands down my favorite nut of all time.  trader joe's sells a bag of individually-wrapped servings, if that helps (though i can't say it's of benefit to the environment).

Oooer trader joe's has such INTERESTING flavors of cashews, it really makes me wish I liked them (something about the oil in cashews makes me ill :/).  But they have honey sesame, wasabi and tamari, pepper... they all look so cool :)

Firstly-----
i am with you COMPLETELY when it comes to not being able to STOP eating nuts----for me tho--it's dry roasted peanuts,....as well as almonds, cashews, pecans, and salty walnuts.---

NEXT: YES you can freeze nuts---although nuts are VERY shelf-stable,...they are still capable of going rancid over a long period of time due to the high amount of FAT held within them---so freezing is def. an option, however I am able to tell a taste difference sometimes----

Lastly:---a serving of nuts is about an oz....for cashews..that's 16-18 whole nuts

hope i helped a little!

I love them too!!  They're my favorite for sure.  I could eat them all day.  Not such a good thing with such a calorie-dense food.  But yeah, one ounce of nuts is a serving.

Thanks for the help!

I'm in the UK so we don't have Trader Joes over here. We do have Julian Graves which is full of different nuts, dried fruit & healthy nibbling things but no small servings of nuts just big 'uns.

I figured if I freeze them I can't just grab them out the cupboard & scoff the lot.

OMG I love cashews!!! We have a love-hate relationship, I think. We were cool, the cashews and I, until one night I was up late writing a paper and thought I would just have a serving size (yes I counted the cashews individually to make sure what I was eating matched the recommended portion on the back of the can) and they were freaking DELICIOUS!!

So I like polished off the rest of the damn can!!! I know that of all the things in the world to binge on, nuts aren't that bad.. but I swear to god I ate like 500 calories and 50 grams of fat worth of damn cashews!! And that was only 4 portion's worth!

*sigh* I haven't brought myself to buy any since, I'm scared it will happen again lol. And the thing is I'm fine with almonds, and nut snack mixes, I'm just WEAK when it comes to cashews.

Nuts are my trigger food, not ice cream, or chocolate, cake & cookies have no power, but get me in range of those wondrous of all foods, cashews, pecans, walnuts, and almonds and I am like a crack addict.

OMG... I love cashews. They are by far my favorite nut.  They are great on salads (I use them as a protein subsitute sometimes) and I even put them in my chili (they get this awesome meaty texture when they are cooked in my chili).  I pretty much love all nuts though.

If I would let myself I could polish off 1/2 a can at one sitting.  It is really hard to set out my portion and not go back for more. >.<

I also love cashews.  I don't think I could handle having a big ol' bag of cashews in my house.  One thing I found to cut my cashew craving is a Cashew Cookie Larabar.  They are so dense that they knock out the cashew craving, but they are lower in calories and portioned for you so that you don't accidentally end up eating 960 calories without realizing it.

Well I've been a very good girl & bought a 200g bag & divides into 1oz portions & stuck them in the freezer. However, a few some how got into my mouth. How that happend I don't know Innocent

I like every type of nut except pecans.  I could down a gallon tub of cashews at one sitting!  Mmmm... honey roasted peanuts.  Man, I seriously wish peanuts were really good for you because I could eat them all day long!!!!!!!

A good tactic for me is just...reason. First, I don't have a lot of money and cashews are damned expensive, not too mention they really are (at least to me) a delicacy. I actually do 1.5-2 oz of nuts for my serving, which is 230-300 cals and I usually do that for my early morning snack. (I don't like having a large meal for breakfast). I've portioned it out to A) make it last, B) keep my costs down and C) so that I am not tempted to eat more than I really want to out of boredom or addiction. A good tactic is to hide the food in a drawer or do seomthing with yourself besides thinking about freaking nuts. heh, y'know?

Thank God I am not alone.  I eat cashews and almonds every day but count them.  I eat two servings a day and still lose weight, I just add them into my daily allowance and for some reason even though they are loaded in fat it has not expanded my waistline at all.  But seriously they are my only downfall, I don't touch sugar but I love nuts!

#15 red_herring May 23 2008 02:51
I eat in about 15 g with an apple, and i eat the apple first and before i take a bite of the cashew, i hide the others.

I also buy them raw and unsalted that way if i want roasted ones i have to portion it out, turn on the toaster oven etc etc rather than BINGE. Mind you i still do, but no where near as much. Even having them at the other end of the house where you dnt go dailu works. If you see them you want them

GOD I am so with you on this. I wish nuts were zero-calorie. if there was one thing I'd choose to be invented it would be zerocalorie nuts. I cant stop eating almonds/cashews/macadamias once i start on them. I'm a picker, so sometimes i'll just go over to the jar of it and grab a fingerful (two, three) and jump around to some song afterwards because i'm feeling guilty. It's so annoying!!
