Diet tips: Keep healthy snack at your desk like almonds. If you have a fridge, keep fruits and veggies. Then, if you get hungry, you won't be tempted to go to the vending machine, or around the corner to the local convenience store.
Exercise tips: Try something new! I tried Bikram (Ex: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bikram_Yoga ) over a year ago and I love it. I go at least once a week. |

The best way to keep yourself from eating too much junk is to not buy the junk in the first place. Keep your house (and lunch pail) stocked with only healthy stuff, and guess what, it gets much easier to eat healthy! ;-)
Exercise does not have to equal "gym." In fact, exercise is any activity that gets you up and moving and breaking a sweat. The secret is to find an activity that you like, and DO IT. Doesn't matter if it's a group sport league (volleyball, softball, etc.,) a martial arts class, a DVD workout that you enjoy, yoga, pilates, rock climbing, jogging, bicycling, swimming, walking...get the point? Just because lots of people happen to like the gym doesn't mean that's the only way. Find something you love to do, no matter what it is, and do it. The hardest step is the first one. Make a committment to yourself to eat a little better and move a little more for two weeks. That's all, just two little weeks. By the end of that two weeks, it won't seem all that hard anymore. |

Well, hanging out here is a good start, that's for sure. Also, oatmeal, fruit, low fat dairy products, drinking lots of water and the Cooking Light website, for me. I like that they post nutritional information for all their recipes and give you portion sizing. Plus there are reviews for the recipes. I find it a lot easier to plan lunches and dinners with some variety. Today at work we hosted a seminar and lunch was italian or cheesesteak wedgies and buffalo or BBQ wings with ranch or blue cheese dressing. Ugh! I'm SOOO glad I didn't indulge. When I looked up the calories - yikes! Ignorance may be bliss, but it certainly won't lead to weight loss! |

My tip is don't eat at night. I don't eat after 7pm. It's the only way I can lose weight. |

My tip is don't rule out any one food - that will only make you want it more and eventually you will cave. Instead, have that food when you really want it and just have a smaller proportion. Also, don't consider yourself on a 'diet' - if you want to stay thin after losing the weight, make a lifestyle change, don't go on a diet. |

Original Post by momof2funykds: I have to say I don't agree with this. If I tried to restrict myself like that I'd definitely be binging by the time 10pm rolled around. Probably what you really need to do is know yourself and your weak points and plan for them. |

Excuse me while I ramble on. Here is my list: I make lists- one for exercise, one for things that need to done around the house,an inventory list of what is in my cupboard, fridge and freezer. When I first started eating right I made of list of all the things I shouldn't indulge in. Then I made a list of better choices and I by doing this I found myself not craving the bad choices. I find myself getting frustrated because I am not losing as fast as I want But what I have lost has stayed off for three years. I just stay on track because I want to lose weight and not gain it. I am learning how I can eat healthy the rest of my life. DIETS don't work but eating right does. We all have different bad habits and her are some of mine that I have let go of. I use to have bread and butter with all my meals . I don't eat fast food. Maybe twice a year! If I eat before bedtime I go to my fruit bowl. If I go to the fridge and find myself thinking I don't want this or that I close the door. I don't have empty calorie food in the house because if it is there I will eat it. |

Original Post by boobi_trapp: Um...Mystic has presented him/herself as somewhat of a provocateur on another thread, so I recommend taking that post with a grain of salt. And the best basic advice I can offer anyone, particularly when starting out changing over to a healthy lifestyle is to don't panic. Not everything goes according to plan, you'll plateau, weight will fluctuate, you'll goout with friends, you'll be at holiday buffets and birthday parties. Getting stressed out over it will only make it worse - calm down, breathe, focus, and figure out what happens next to make it better. |

I have to be honest, logging my calories/exercise on this website has worked wonders for me. Before eating snacks, I tend to think to myself 'Ugh. Do I really want to log this????' And I also find that logging my exercise is a form of positive reinforcement that makes me get my rump to the gym. I just LOVE adding an extra 400-500 calories to my 'burn meter.'
Kind of dorky, but y'know. Working for me. |

I sit down on Sunday and plan low calorie dinners for the whole week, and go grocery shopping, after dinner, or lunch so I'm not tempted buy things at the grocery store. I write a list and stick to it. If it's no on the list, it doesn't go in the cart. This way I'm not running in and out of the grocery store, and there isn't extra food lying around the house I don't need. Also, I make dinner for 6 (there are four of us) so that I can take my low calorie dinners to work for lunch. |

Baby Carrots are great. You can eat a lot of them for a small caloric price. Also, when I'm very hungry and going out of the office to have lunch I try to snack on some of them before, so I'm not starving and ordering bad foods when I get to the restaurant. |

Eat enough to lose weight. Find out how much your body needs and keep up with that. More or less will sabotage you. |
