| Help, I need a scale that works! | ||
| May 19 2008 20:50 | ||
Hi all, I just bought a scale from Bed Bath and Beyond and I thought it was a good one since I paid almost 70.00 for it. Each time I get on it the numbers change about 2-3 pounds. not each day but 30 seconds later the numbers change. Then I go to the gym and the scale there says something different, So I have really no idea what is my accurate weight. Does anyone know of a good scale that doesn't change minute to minute and isn't hundreds of dollars? Thanks so much!!! |

I have a scale that I really like it's a health meter brand that I got from Wal-mart ... it was about $40. (At the time I needed a scale that would weigh up to 400 lbs. ) It doesn't give different readings and is digital so it weighs to the oz. it also gives body fat readings and hydration levels I do have a suggestion that you pick a scale you plan to weigh on and stick to that one only. Every scale will read different. ( my parents scale weighs low compared to mine and my Drs. scale weighs high ) good luck..!

What i usually do to account for scale differences is get a 10lb weight and put it on the scale. if it says it is in fact 10 lbs, then I go with it. If not I add or subtract based on the difference |

Original Post by adge1967: Sounds like your scale doesnt work. You might want to try to calibrate it. Try to use a weight, if you dont have one then use a 5lb bag of sugar or something. Dont use multiple scales. Each scale has a slight error in it.

I went to Bed Bath and Booty at the beginning of my weight loss and I tried 4 different scales (2 regular, 2 digital) and they were all very different. There was a 6 pound difference between the highest and lowest. And some of the same ones weighed me differently. I couldn't zero them out either. I weigh myself at the GNC. |

I just bought new scales. My other one just quit working after a month. Of course i lost the receipt and couldn't return it. It wasn't that great and it was about 7-8 lbs less than the scales at my dad's house. Well, my new scales now are really consistent, the other one wasn't, but I'm was charting according to what the other scale said. So now I'm "up" 8 lbs...but I guess I'm not really. It's almost like starting over. I'm kind of pissed off and disheartened. But i should be glad to have some working scales now. i weighed a 5lb bag of flour and voila! it read 5lbs. So i've been 8lbs more than i thought. Which is a drop in the bucket so what i need to lose, but it still freaked me out. |

I have a scale at work, at the gym and a digital scale in my room. All three scales gives me different numbers ranging 2-4 pounds. I just stick to the scale in my room and weigh in every morning. This way I can track how many pounds I lost even though scale might be just a little bit off. Strange thing is tho, my scale won't even detect a 10 pounds dumbell. When I put the dumbells by themselves, scale won't read them. When I weigh in WITH the dumbells, scale reads them. Uh... I don't know :oP Mine is weird I guess. |

Tanita makes the most accurate scales, in my opinion. I've had similar problems as the OP described with digital scales, but never with my beloved Tanita. They're pricey but reliable. No sense weighing yourself when you cannot use the same, reliable source. |

thanks atsetti, I will look into the tanita. Does anyone think the scales at the gym are good? The one I go to which is LA fitness in marina del rey is the old fashioned kind that are at the doctors. |

health o meter brand is pretty good.... my parents have two (one is 15/20 years old) and i have one and they all weigh in pretty close. I find the ones at my gym to be a little funky |

A scale is just a measure of change over a period of time. If your scale is drastically different, you can either go back and change your weights to reflect the difference with the new scale or suck it up and realize that it's just a number. You're healthier which is more important than the poundage. |

I feel your pain, i got myself a high falutin digital scale, and it is a pain in the neck, I just weight myself on wii fit now! I was going to the doc's to weigh in, but i found out his scale was 10 kilos LOWER than my REAL weight, I was soooo happy I had lost so much until every other scale in the world told me otherwise!!! |

I have a digital scale (salter) and I only weigh myself on it, but if I weigh myself twice in 15 mins or so then the second reading will always be 1-2lbs heavier. I contacted them & they said that digital scales need a period of time to 're-balance' themselves after being used (well, they used more technical terms but thats what I thought he was saying?) and to leave at least 30mins between weigh-ins. This would screw my morning routine (i.e.I'd have to put off breakfast, washing etc! LOL!) so I weigh once, log it & forget about it! |

I have an inexpensive Taylor fat scale that I got at B.J.'s for about $30 I figure Taylor makes scientific instruments and it has been within a pound of the doctor's office scale. Had it for 3 years. I have noted that how you stand on the balance can influence the weight reading. I am consistenly lighter if my weight is on my toes vs. on my heels. |
