Hey everyone

I've recently started going gym (3 weeks ago) doing lots of cardio and work on my stomach ... i go about 3-5 times a week depending on when i have time

I've been watching what I eat, i've cut out all crisps chocs etc and started adding in fruit and i only drink water...

Thing is, i know its only been 3 weeks but I havn't lost any weight at all, and i thought i would have lost a couple of pounds if not more!

I'm about 5 foot 3, and weight 11 stones 1 pound...I used to be 9 and a half stones but i added all this weight on since starting Uni in september.. wich i now want to lose!

Any suggestions on why I havnt lost any weight yet and what I can do to get a kick start because im starting 2 lose motivation! Thanks Smile

Bear in mind that you may be toning up and gaining muscle in lieu of the fat, and muscle weighs nearly 5 times as much as fat (methinks..?). How do you look? Your face normally loses weight first - have you noticed a difference?

11 stone 1... thats 155 lbs (american site, needs american system)

When you say you've been watching what you eat, what have you been doing? Have you worked out your calorie expenditure and deficit needed?

Use the tools on this site to work out how much you need, because if you eat too little your body goes into starvation and won't budge from your weight. I'm assuming you're a girl (sorry if you're not!), but as such you need at least 1200 calories per day. If this is the case, its unusual not to have lost any weight (a lb or two then stop i would say is normal for starvation) but that could be attributed to muscle gain.

Try and sort out what vitamins/minerals etc you're getting too. That should help. Otherwise, I don't know!

Hope it goes well!

Also bare in mind that if you have never seriously worked out before (or not in a long time) your muscles will retain water while they work out your not trying to kill them.

Stick with it up your fluids and the you will probabally find weight will shift all at once at some point soon.

Yeah sorry I realise I didnt give much information about myself, im 19 female, 155 lbs is right yes. I want to be about 126 lbs.

I havnt noticed much of a difference right now, the scales have stayed pretty much the same in the last 3 weeks, of course fluctuating throughout the day due to eating.

So if I am gaining muscle, wat could I do at the gym to prevent that and to begin burning fat? This could be right that I am gaining muscle but i'm not much of an expert at this kind of stuff...

In terms of watching wat i eat, just cut out all bad foods, cut down on take-outs (i did this a lot while being away from home at University), erm adding fruit and veggies to diet, only drinking water, cutting out bread however if i do end up having bread its a low calorie wholemeal one (46 kcals per slice)

I just thought i'd see some sort of a difference in 3 weeks!

Thanks for the replies i appreciate it, keep em comin :P

A pound of fat equals 3500 calories.  Calculate what you burn each day using this site, and eat 500 less than that each day to lose a pound a week.  Don't try to lose more than 1% of your body weight per week.

You can maintain your weight, and gain weight, eating 'healthy' foods just as you could eating 'unhealthy' foods if you eat too much of them.  Why on earth would you cut out bread?  Bread's yummy, and whole wheat bread is very good for you.

Good luck.

I try cut out bread because everyone tels me 2 cut it out, because its  bad carbs and will put on weight! well white bread definatly, also aswell as pasta...! but i like bread so tryed this wholemeal 46 kcal per slide bread, not so bad)

So right i think im getting the hang of all this calorie stuff n wat i shud burn n stuff.....

but the main thing i need 2 know is: at the gym while im training, should i be training at higher intensities for less time, or lower intensities for longer in order to burn fat????

I usualy spend 40 mins on the treadmill doing a mixture of running at around 4.5 - 5mph... and walking uphill at around 3.5-4mph burning 450 calories approx (usualy 10 min running, 10 min walking, 10 min running, and 10 min walking)......

But a friend told me i should be doing less time say around 20 mins but at higher speeds in order to burn the fat otherwise my existing fat will turn to muscle. IS THIS TRUE? IM SO CONFUSED!! :S :(

PLEASE HELP!!! all replies will be much appreciated :) x

This is just my 2 cents, Im a male so this might make a slight difference.

I have lost 66 lbs since the start of Jan 07. It is a very hard and difficult road with a tremendous amount of rewards.

I am not ashamed to say as a man, (a hard core construction worker) when my uniform pants (size 48 ) were busting at the seams I felt extremely hopeless nothing I did worked to lose fat. I cried each time I put on clothes. I am not kidding. My blood glucose was at 205 meaning I was becoming an insulin dependent diabetic. More crying.Cry

The only thing that worked was both exercising and counting every cal that went into my system. and trust me, I would lose and gain I called it the see/saw effect. Then I would plateau for months felling more hopeless. but I keep-ed with it.

Im at 201-207 lbs its up and down. I am no longer considered a diabetic. and I can fit into a size 36. I do cheat at times. Laughing

Be true to your self.

I will never forget. I will never surrender.

I am not on a diet, I am changing my life style.
