I don't mean to be gross... coley_moley
  May 18 2008 17:54

Okay...so I just had breakfast (I tried something new)

2 egg whites, 1/4th cup prunes, piece of WW/WG toast with 1/2T smart balance spread.

usually I have a granola bar and a protein drink.

Anyway...my new breakfast was great going in- but about 15 minutes later I gave it all back up to the pocelain God.  I don't feel sick- but for the past month or so I've been having bouts of vertigo.  (I know for sure that I'm not pregnant- so that's not it.)  I do keep my sodium under 2000mg and I have read that not getting enough sodium can cause this- but the number they gave for that to be a possibility was consuming less than 500mg of sodium (which is not the case).  So two questions:

Has anyone else experienced negative side effects  from changing their diet to a more healthy alternative?

Should I eat more to make up for the breakfast I just gave up?

I don't know.... prunes and eggwhites sounds like a pretty 'heave-ho' combination to me.  Not sure how you kept it down for 15 minutes!

Seriously... you could have a some kind of stomach bug or you could have had some bacteria lurking on one of your foods.  See your doctor if you carry on getting vertigo or nausea

No ear pain and I'm FOR SURE that I'm NOT pregnant.  Should I try to eat more later to make up for the breakfast I lost?

Did you by chance take a multi-vitamin? I learned the hard way not to take mine in the morning...

I don't know if you should make up for the lost calories - it's hard to say how much was absorbed. If you're hungry - eat. If not, you'll be fine.

Yes, I did take a multi-vitamin...I take one every morning.  I've never had a problem with them before.  You think that was it?

I can't say for sure but if i take a multi-vitamin, i HAVE to take it at night right before I go to bed or i end up sacrificing to the porcelain god myself! I'd still check with your dr. just to be sure. :)

I'd think egg-whites and prunes would be a breakfast combination that would be pretty hard for most people to keep down! Next time, try the eggs and toast by themselves and leave the prunes out of it. As for the vertigo, if it keeps coming back, see a doctor - you might have an inner ear infection or something that can be treated to make you feel better.

I agree about the miltivitamin.  I would take it with a meal that sticks a little more.  My stomach is sensitive to vitamins, and I know the old breakfast would have been fine with one, but the new one doesn't seem like it would be(for my stomach).

Try taking the vitamin with your lunch or dinner tomorrow and see if breakfast goes a little better.

I got nothing on the vertigo though, sorry!

to add to the grotesqueness.. are you having alot of (ah-hem) diarrhea? If so.. your electrolytes may be slightly off (im not a doctor!). Make sure your eating enough, and not prunes! haha. Also, check your blood pressure. Mine runs on the lower end, 90/60- so i get light-headed easily.. adding sodium to diet is an easy fix and lots of water. BUT, if its something that does not go away, or becomes redundant, go get it checked out. always good to know what the cause REALLY is. Good luck!

And stay away from those prunes (wink!)

As for the vertigo, an inner ear infection doesn't necessarily cause pain like a middle or outer ear infection does.  My mom had one a couple of years ago with no pain, but with vertigo.  If the vertigo continues or gets worse I would definitely get it checked out.

I had that problem when I went on the Slim4Life diet. I went for months doing everything they said and never had a problem, and then one day I got so sick I couldn't even go to work (though I was feeling just fine before, and about 2 hours later when it finally stopped) Think it was just a virus or something, I went back to the same routine the next day... same problem. I stopped taking the supplements after that (partially just because they made the problem more foul..) and it stopped. Until I ran out of money and started drinking the Slim Fast Protien Shakes instead of their snacks, and then a couple months later tried the weight control vitamins by onea day. Yeah, same problem. Turns out it was Vitamin K.

Vitamin K is sort of like fiber in that your body never actually digests it.  It lines the intestines to aid in digestion, and some claim, reduce the body's absorption of fats. About one in ten people have extremely adverse reactions to the high dosage that is recomended as a diet supplement. Turns out I was one. Whatever I was eating in combination with the supplements was just too much for my body.

I'd wonder if maybe prunes pack any K? And your multivitamin?

that just gave me flash backs... i would take a multivitamin with just water when I was in a hurry some mornings... dizzy and I had to pull over b/c I couldn't keep it down.... I have to take it with a decent amount of food and water or I will get super sick- It took me a little bit to figure it out, but that is what did it for me....

Mulitivitamins do that to me too. They never used to, but the several brands that I've tried recently all do that. If I manage to keep them down, then I get terrible intestinal cramps that last for about 4 hours. The good news is, if you're eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, you most likely don't even need to be taking a vitamin supplement.

On a side note, vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin and does get absorbed better when you eat it with fat (I've never heard that it PREVENTS fat absorption though). It's important for proper blood clotting. Most people get plenty from the food they normally eat, unless they have a disease that interferes with their ability to absorb fats.

Multi vitamins make me ill in the morning also, my thing is if i eat alot to feel full I have a coughing fit, but that has been going on for about a year +.

Almost to the point where it makes me hurl, I have a few times, weird

I eat usually less than 500 mg of sodium a day and I don't fell sick because of this. I think it's not the problem..

#17 annielikesapples May 20 2008 15:12

It's probably the prunes...
