Body Fat % and getting it tested free...? raiken3712
  May 17 2008 06:59

I'm 24 years old 6'0" tall 290 lb with a body fat % of 37% according to my digital scale.  Right now my calorie target is 2085 based on BMR/RMR Calculator my stats.

The body fat % when put in is supposed to make things more accurate I think, but the problem is that I've heard body fat digital scales using BIA are way off in some instances like 15-20% off.....

Is it a problem relying and using the 37% number or should I get a more accurate number.  Of note also is when 37% is not entered it says eat 2599 and do 1233 in exercise a day as opposed to the 2085 and 1047.

I'm thinking there might be a possibly of getting my body fat measured more accurately while being free?....Not sure though

I'm guessing if I joined a gym I could get it done for free, but the gym itself costs money that I just don't have atm.

A post by techdog in this post http://caloriecount.about.com/forums/post/97412.html

would lead me to believe it might be a big deal to do the 2085 and 1047 numbers because if I use his method to determine the amount to eat in a day its 2286 or 2442 by his second method....making my current numbers either almost 300 too low or 400 too low.

If however I have the 37% body fat it changes things....

Thank

Another thing I wonder is what my goal weight should be....right now I have it set at 180 because ...well the ideal weight for me seems really low to me...

162.8 is the ideal weight on phord.com/cc 136.4 lb - 182.6 lb is the ideal range....I guess the range factors in body frame size and the fact that some people have or want more muscle?

My frame is large so I guess 182.6 might be a bit more optimal than the middle of the road 162.8.

Small Frame is 136.4 Medium  Frame 162.8 and Large Frame is 182.6?  Is that what the range is based off of does anyone know?

I've been having the same problem i thought my gym would have a way of testing my fat % but no i'm spending the equiv of $140 a month and they have NO CLUE they don't even own calipers.

they do have a fancy looking set of body fat reading scales but i don't hold much faith in them, i have a set at home that says im 23.5% the gyms say 25% but i really wish i had something more accurate to go on.

Somebody on this site recommended this page for estimating body fat without calipers:

Home body fat test

You input some basic body measurements -- I think it's a good estimate because I have a body fat scale at home that gave me a 27% fat reading and this web site also gave me a 27% fat reading. The scale at home fluctuates depending on my water % but the average right now is 27%. See if that helps. Otherwise, a gym should be able to tell you but my gym has the same kind of scale as mine at home.

I guess the only true method might be the hydrostatic body fat testing where they immerse you in water. Some hospitals and colleges do this kind of testing.

Well this site is off.. PERIOD.. It has me at 8.6% Fat, and 151.7 lean muscle mass, when I think I am about 14.3 pounds of body fat, and this is off. I am 32% body fat mass. I wish I was that lean in muscle mass. I guess some of this jiggle I got is just soft muscle.. Sorry for making fun of this site, but my height wasn't a factor, so what gives with that.
