I started my lifestyle changes on February 1, 2008, weighing in at 284 lbs., height 5'10". 3 1/2 months later I weigh in at 239 lbs. Just started my member account today and updated the weight loss records I have been keeping on my calendar. Had a bicycle accident 3 1/2 weeks ago and injuries have curtailed my exercise for 3 weeks and have just started bicycling and walking in the last few days, albeit slowly since my injured foot is still causing some pain. My weight loss has drastically slowed - I suspect due to insufficient caloric intake. I had been using the cc website to guesstimate my caloric intake, but upon entering everything concisely today I was shocked to see that I'm barely eating 1200 calories on a day when I'm eating LOTS. Most days I guess I was only taking in around 900 calories. Thanks to the cc website and forums I'm not in a panic and cutting calories further ... I'll be adding several hundred calories a day and then let's see what happens. I sure would welcome some support right about now ... |

Injury is sprained foot. Other collateral injuries have healed in the interim. The foot sprain was around the toe area (black and blue toes and under the foot in the arch close to the ball of the big toe). Activities: I can ride my bike at a leisurely pace of <10 mph. Any faster and it puts too much pressure on the foot, resulting in knifelike pain. I can also walk slowly <3mph wearing my MBT's. Noticed yesterday that my snail-like pace was speeding up a tiny bit. But I can only walk about a mile before the pain increases too much. I do about 15 minutes of free weights in the evening for upper body. I'm not "into" exercise per se. I want to dedicate only about an hour or so a day total to exercise about 5-7 days a week. Just enough to keep the body moving. Now I'm worried and starting to obsess about my plateau. Will increase total calories and protein, reducing carbs. If that doesn't work, I don't know what to do next. |

Wow, you've lost 45 lbs in the last 3 1/2 months! That's fantastic! I would celebrate that progress that you'd made -- that's a lot of weight you aren't carrying around any more.
You might see a plateau as your body gets its metabolism back on track, but you should start losing after that.

Female, 5'10", age 55 Any help is much appreciated. It's easy as long as I see results, but the plateau, even though just started, is driving me NUTS! I guess the astonishing weight loss over the past months has spoiled me, so I just have trouble stepping on the scale and not seeing even one pound drop off in a week. It's just hard to deal with mentally/emotionally. |

Using an adjusted body weight, I calculated your BMR to be about 1500 calories a day. That would be the lowest you should go. Even if you are ABLE to eat less than that, it's not a good idea to do it on a regular basis.
It may help if you were to look at this period of time as a "getting healthy," rather than "losing weight." If your goal is not to lose as much weight as quickly as you can but instead to clean up your eating habits and start exercising, then getting through the plateaus will be easier. Also, the closer you get to a healthy weight, the harder it gets to LOSE weight. However, the benefits start showing sooner! For example, the difference in sizes gets closer. It may be 40lbs between a 26 and a 24, but only 10lbs between a 12 and a 10, for example (of course, every person is different, but you get the idea). That's probably not the slowdown you are seeing now, but just keep it in mind!

Thanks. I actually have to try to eat more in order to get close to 1500 calories. I enter everything into the log that passes my lips. I am accurate about serving size, even down to weighing portions. (When I committed myself to changing my lifestyle and practicing portion control on February 1st, I was totally amazed to discover that I had been eating triple portions of most foods in addition to making lots of bad food choices). I had noticed that my bad eating habits and resulting weight gain were starting to manifest themselves in health issues. This is actually what gave me the impetus to make a change. After a 47 lb. weight loss I myself still can't see much change. I feel better, have more energy, sleep better at night and husband and friends say they see a change. The scale today showed that I lost one pound! At long last (it's been several weeks)! I'm going on a 10 day cruise this summer. My goal is to continue to exercise good judgement at mealtimes. Lots of walking will be involved when sightseeing 8 days out of 10. I know the scale will show more pounds when I get back, but that's okay, too - because it will be temporary. The foods are prepared with more sodium that I use at home, and even when being careful, I know I will retain more water than usual. I will also allow myself treats, like an occasional ice cream or cookie or piece of candy, but my goal is maintain control, i.e. have one scoop of ice cream and not a huge sundae, etc. |

That's a great attitude! Keep your head up and know that you will do fine. |
